Chereads / Reincarnated as a Carp: The Evolution System / Chapter 28 - Beneath the Surface

Chapter 28 - Beneath the Surface

The Abyss was a place of contradictions. On one hand, it was alive with vibrant colors, bioluminescent plants illuminating the inky dark water, like stars in an endless night sky. On the other, there was a palpable sense of oppression—an unseen weight pressing down on everything, as if the depths themselves had a memory of ancient suffering. As Daniel and Mira ventured further, the quiet was their only company, broken only by the occasional shift of water currents.

The fragments, with their eerie glow, were silent in Daniel's possession. He had grown accustomed to their strange hum, the way they seemed to pulse in rhythm with his own heartbeat, but now they felt more like a curse than a blessing. Every time he looked at them, he was reminded of what was at stake. The whispers from Rhea still lingered in his mind, the warning of the Harbingers and the one who lay beneath.

"We're getting closer," Mira said, her voice low, almost drowned by the surrounding silence.

Daniel didn't need to ask how she knew. Mira had an uncanny ability to read the currents, to sense the subtle shifts in the water. Her experience in the Abyss was something Daniel could never hope to match, but he was learning. Every day, every challenge, was sharpening him, making him stronger.

"What's down here, Mira?" Daniel asked, his gaze scanning the water ahead. It seemed to stretch on forever, an endless expanse of darkened water and shifting shadows.

She paused for a moment, her expression unreadable. "The heart of the Abyss," she said, finally. "I don't know what lies at the very bottom, but there are ruins—ancient structures, older than anything we've seen on the surface. Some say the fragments are tied to them, that they were created to keep something sealed away."

Daniel frowned. "Sealed away? What kind of thing could be worth keeping locked up?"

Mira shook her head, her eyes narrowing as if she was staring into some distant memory. "I don't know, but I'm going to find out. Whatever it is, the Harbingers want it, and they're willing to destroy everything to get their hands on it."

As they continued their descent, the water around them began to grow colder. Daniel's fins twitched nervously, his instincts on edge. There was a tension in the water now, something that made him feel like they were no longer alone. A shift in the currents, a subtle change in the water pressure—it was as if something was watching them.

The system chimed softly:

[Warning: Unidentified Entity Approaching.]

Daniel's heart skipped a beat. Mira immediately tensed beside him, her hand going to the hilt of her blade.

"Stay alert," Mira whispered, her voice sharp with caution. "Whatever this is, it's not friendly."

They moved as one, their movements synchronized. The water was thick with the pressure of impending danger, every shadow a potential threat. The seconds stretched, drawn out by the oppressive atmosphere, until finally, the creature revealed itself.

A colossal figure emerged from the darkness—its body long and serpentine, scales reflecting the faintest hint of light. Its head was crowned with multiple eyes, each one glowing with an eerie, unnatural light. The creature's body undulated slowly, its movements hypnotic, as though it was drawing them in with its sheer presence.

[Entity Identified: Abyssal Serpent.]

The system's voice echoed in Daniel's mind, but he barely registered it. He was too focused on the creature's gaze, its eyes locking onto him with an intelligence that sent a chill down his spine.

"It's huge," Daniel muttered, his voice tight. "What is it?"

Mira's voice was calm, but there was a note of urgency beneath it. "It's an ancient guardian. These things were put in place to protect the deepest secrets of the Abyss. We don't have time to fight it. We need to get past."

Daniel's heart raced. He had fought dangerous creatures before, but nothing like this. The Abyssal Serpent was unlike anything he had ever seen—a being forged from the very depths of the Abyss itself, and its gaze was enough to paralyze any who met it.

The serpent began to swim toward them, its movements slow but deliberate. Daniel could feel the weight of its presence bearing down on them, as if the entire Abyss was holding its breath.

"Any ideas?" Daniel asked, his voice steady despite the surge of adrenaline coursing through his veins.

Mira didn't answer immediately. She was studying the creature, her mind working through possibilities. Then, with a sharp nod, she drew her blade. "We don't fight it head-on. We outmaneuver it. Keep moving, and whatever you do, don't get caught in its gaze."

The serpent was getting closer, and Daniel could feel its gaze tightening on him. The creature's eyes were mesmerizing, its stare drawing him in with an almost hypnotic pull. His system flickered, a warning flashing before him:

[Warning: Mental Domination Imminent. Avoid Direct Eye Contact.]

"Move!" Mira barked.

Daniel snapped his gaze away, focusing instead on the water around him. They needed to keep moving, to avoid the creature's gaze at all costs. He activated Hydro Dash, propelling himself forward with a burst of speed. Mira was right beside him, her movements fluid and graceful as she dodged the serpent's strike.

The serpent lunged, its massive jaws snapping shut just inches from Daniel's tail. He barely managed to avoid it, his heart pounding in his chest as he pushed himself harder, his fins propelling him through the water with more speed than he thought he could manage.

"Keep it together!" Mira shouted, her voice carrying over the rushing water. She turned sharply, drawing the serpent's attention away from Daniel, creating an opening for him to slip past.

Daniel didn't hesitate. He took the opportunity, darting through the water with a swift Piercing Surge, avoiding the serpent's next strike as he passed. The creature hissed in frustration, its body writhing in the water as it tried to reposition itself.

Mira wasn't far behind, cutting through the water with deadly precision. She lashed out with her blade, striking the serpent's side with a force that caused the creature to recoil, but it quickly recovered, angrier than before.

"Get to the ruins!" Mira called out, urgency in her voice.

Daniel's heart pounded as he glanced over at her, seeing the strain on her face. She was trying to hold the serpent off, but it was clear that they couldn't keep this up for long.

The ruins were in sight now—ancient structures rising out of the depths, their jagged edges illuminated by the pale glow of bioluminescent plants. It was their only hope, their only way to escape the serpent's wrath.

"Go!" Mira yelled again, her voice barely audible over the roar of the serpent's pursuit.

With all the strength he had left, Daniel surged forward, swimming toward the ruins as fast as he could. The Abyssal Serpent was still on their tail, but the ancient structures seemed to offer some kind of refuge. If they could just make it there...

As they reached the entrance to the ruins, Daniel felt a powerful surge of energy. He glanced back to see Mira following close behind, but the serpent was gaining.

"Move, Mira!" he shouted, pulling her forward with him.

They made it inside the ancient ruins just as the serpent's massive jaws snapped shut behind them. The entrance was narrow, just wide enough for them to squeeze through, but the serpent's size made it impossible for it to follow.

For a moment, everything was still. The roar of the serpent faded, replaced by the sound of their heavy breathing as they leaned against the cold stone walls of the ruins.

"That was too close," Daniel said, his voice hoarse with exhaustion.

Mira nodded, her expression grim. "We're not safe yet."

Daniel looked around at the ruins. The walls were covered in strange markings—symbols he couldn't understand. But something about them felt... ancient. Powerful.

"We're in the heart of it now," Mira said, her gaze sweeping over the surroundings. "This is where it all begins."

Daniel nodded. They had made it this far, but the real danger was just ahead.
