Scarlett waited in front of the elementary school, watching a group of little kids leave, but Ashley did not come out as expected.
Usually, Ashley would have run out by this time, so why hadn't he come out today?
She waited until everyone had left the school entrance, but still, Ashley did not appear. She took out her phone from her bag and called Ashley's homeroom teacher.
The call was answered quickly on the other end.
"Hello, teacher, I'd like to know why Ashley hasn't come out yet."
"Ashley's mom? His dad picked him up right after school. Didn't his dad tell you?"
"..."
"Hello, can you hear me? Ashley's mom."
Scarlett felt her whole body trembling with anger. She clenched her phone tightly and after a while, she said, "Thank you, Ms. Lauren Baker. I just confirmed with his dad, and the child was indeed picked up by him."
"Okay then."
"Sorry to trouble you, I'll hang up now." Scarlett said and ended the call. She held her phone, somewhat dazed.
"Excuse me, don't you know you're blocking the way?" A driver looked at Scarlett, who was standing in the middle of the road, and couldn't help but speak up.
Scarlett moved to the side and apologized, only to bump into another woman crossing the road.
"How do you walk? Are those two big eyes for show? I've never seen someone just walk into others like that." A woman in her forties glanced at Scarlett and said.
"I'm sorry, it wasn't intentional."
"An apology is not going to feed me. If apologies were enough, what would be the use of the police?"
"Hey, you should stop talking." The man next to the woman looked at Scarlett and couldn't help but speak up.
The woman became furious upon hearing this: "I should stop talking? Why should I stop? What? She bumped into me, and I should kneel down and thank her?"
"The person has apologized. Let's not be unreasonable. Let's just go home early."
"Are you crazy? Taking her side? Seeing a pretty woman and you can't even think straight, right? She bumped into me, and you're telling me to let it go? Are you okay?"
After scolding, the woman looked at Scarlett again, "Tsk," she made a sound and said, "Dressing so flamboyantly to pick up a child, like a vixen, who are you trying to impress?"
"Just stop talking, she only bumped into you once. Do you really have to make such a fuss and insult people?"
Scarlett didn't have time to waste with them; Ashley had been taken away by Logan, that jerk.
Before she could leave, the woman grabbed her.
The driver behind them couldn't help but curse: "Are you people crazy? Arguing in the middle of the road, can you go somewhere else? Don't you know you're blocking the way?"
The woman wanted to say something more, but seeing the line of cars backed up behind them, she dragged Scarlett to the side of the road. Scarlett struggled to free herself while saying, "I have an urgent matter, I've already apologized to you, what more do you want?"
The woman kept holding on to her.
Scarlett was used to a comfortable life and hadn't encountered such people in years. The more the woman cursed, the worse it got. A crowd gathered around them, and Scarlett felt her face was at stake.
Seeing the woman's hand about to reach her face, Scarlett didn't care about her image anymore and started cursing at the woman in front of her.
At the police station.
The police officer took statements from the three people in front of him, learning that they had gotten into a fight over a simple bump, and rubbed his temples helplessly, saying, "We should all be more understanding and courteous to each other. Such a trivial matter is not worth fighting over, right?"
The woman wanted to say something more but was stopped by the man next to her, and then she nodded in agreement.
She didn't dare to be so outrageous in the police station.
Scarlett just wanted to leave quickly and said, "Yes."
Outside the police station, Scarlett took out a mirror and looked at her face. Her hair had been messed up, and there were scratches on her face from the woman. However, the woman didn't get off lightly either, as Scarlett had a sharp tongue before marrying Philip.
She fixed her hair, squatted by the roadside, and made a phone call.
After several rings, the other party finally answered.
Scarlett clutched her phone and said, "Where's Ashley? Where did you take him?"
"You're talking nonsense. Ashley is my son too. I took my son home. There's no problem with that, is there?" Logan stood in front of a large floor-to-ceiling window, smirking.
"What do you really want, Logan?"
Logan said, "I don't want to do anything. I just want to tell you, Scarlett, we're divorced, and you won't get a penny. You won't see Ashley again either."
"We've been married for ten years, and you're giving me a clean exit? Logan, are you even human? I can do without money, give me Ashley, give him back to me!" Tears fell from Scarlett's eyes as she spoke, and she squatted by the roadside.
"You're dreaming, Scarlett. You're just a pair of worn shoes I picked up. What are you so proud of? Do you really think you're something special? Even if we go through the courts, do you think they would give the child to someone like you who doesn't even have a job?" Logan found it somewhat amusing.
"Dad, when can I go see mom?" Ashley, holding a doll in his hand, asked innocently.
"Be a good boy, Ashley, go eat first," Logan squatted down to rub Ashley's head, then said to the servant nearby, "Take the young master to eat."
"Yes, sir."
Scarlett heard Ashley's voice, and her nerves tightened. She shouted desperately into the phone, "Logan, you're not human, give me back Ashley! Give him back to me!"
As soon as she finished speaking, the call was cut off.
Scarlett squatted by the roadside, crying helplessly, with no regard for her image. Her hair was messy, and her makeup was smeared from crying.
As evening fell, Scarlett stood up, feeling dazed and confused. She walked slowly.
Now she really had nothing.
She truly had nothing.
Her only pillar of support had also been taken away by Logan, that beast.
As she walked, she suddenly twisted her ankle. Her high heel was caught in the sewer grate.
Indeed, as the old saying goes, when one is down on their luck, everything seems to go wrong.
Scarlett squatted by the roadside to pull out her high heel, which took a long time to get out, but the heel was broken.
So, carrying the broken high heel, she walked back in a daze.
