A month had passed since the mysterious ten-year-old boy walked into Ayaka's life, changing not only her future but also the lives of those in the orphanage.
The transformation at the orphanage was nothing short of miraculous. When Ayaka had received the fifty million dollars from him, she had hesitatedāshe'd thought it was a joke, a prank played by someone with too much time on his hands. But after researching the boy's claims, she had no choice but to believe him.
The donation had brought about immediate changes. The creaky, run-down building was now repainted with fresh colors, and the walls were adorned with motivational posters and children's artwork. New furniture had replaced the old, dilapidated chairs and tables, creating a more comfortable and welcoming environment for the orphans.
The kitchen was stocked with fresh ingredients, and the meals had gone from bland and basic to wholesome and filling.
But it wasn't just the physical changes. The children, who had always walked around with their heads down, now smiled more often. They had access to new toys, books, and even a small play area outside. They no longer spent their days in dull monotony, as the orphanage now offered activities like art classes, sports, and even computer lessons.
And the caretaker, a woman in her mid-thirties named Hana, had taken it upon herself to create a more structured environment. The children had daily routines, and there was a sense of pride in their work.
The boy, who had already been unusually mature for his age, had grown even more observant. He often sat in the corner of the playground, watching the children play with a thoughtful expression. He seemed content to be in the background, quietly observing the positive changes unfolding around him.
But deep down, he knew that this was only the first step in a much bigger plan. He needed to be patient.
As for his own life, things had been going smoothly.
At school, Kaito found himself adapting quickly. His classmates were all amazed at how well he could keep up with them despite his young age. He was already way ahead in math, reading, and history, which drew both admiration and suspicion from some.
His sharp instincts helped him navigate the social dynamics of school, and he quickly became known for his calm and collected demeanor.
But despite his popularity, Kaito remained distant from everyone, his mind always racing with thoughts of the future. His life as an assassin in his past seemed like a distant memory, yet it still shaped his actions. He wasn't one to make friends easilyāhe preferred to observe and analyze.
One afternoon after school, Kaito was sitting in the library when he felt a presence behind him.
It was Ayaka.
"Kaito," She greeted him, her voice slightly hesitant. She had been trying to meet with him privately for days, but the boy was always one step ahead of her.
Today, however, he was alone, engrossed in a book.
Kaito turned and looked up at her with his usual composed expression. "Ayaka-san, you came. What can I do for you?"
Ayaka sat down across from him, the chair creaking slightly. "I've been trying to figure you out for the past month. Who are you really? I've asked around, but there's nothing about youāno family records, no history. It's like you justā¦ appeared."
Kaito's eyes narrowed, but his expression remained neutral. He knew Ayaka had been investigating him, but he also knew how to deflect.
"There's nothing special about me," He said coolly. "Just a kid trying to live a normal life."
"Normal?" Ayaka raised an eyebrow. "You don't act like a normal kid. You're more like a little businessman, orā" She stopped herself, realizing she might be prying too much. "Forget it. I'm just curious."
Kaito simply nodded, not giving anything away. "Curiosity can be dangerous sometimes."
There was a brief silence before Ayaka's phone buzzed. She glanced at it and frowned. "It's from the team. They're asking if we've found a new investor."
Kaito tilted his head, his gaze sharp. "Don't worry about that. You'll have the resources you need to succeed. Just focus on improving your product, and the investors will come."
Ayaka blinked. "You always sound so sure of yourself."
"I'm just a good observer," Kaito said with a shrug. "You've got talent. All you need now is someone who believes in you."
Later that evening, Ayaka sat in her small apartment, staring at the notification from the bank. It was a depositāa small one compared to the firstābut it was consistent.
The boy's mysterious investor had continued to send her money every week, albeit in smaller increments. She wasn't sure if he was doing this out of kindness, or if he had some ulterior motive.
What really baffled her, though, was how Kaito seemed to always be ahead of her, in both business and life. She couldn't figure him out. His maturity, his business acumenāit was all too advanced for a child his age.
Ayaka sighed and leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples.
"Who are you, Kaito?" She muttered to herself.
The following days passed in a blur. At the orphanage, the children continued to thrive. Miss Hana was thrilled with the improvements, and her complexion also turned much better.
The once-neglected playground was now filled with laughter and energy as the kids ran around, their faces alight with joy.
Kaito watched them from the corner, his mind always working. He didn't let himself get attached, not to anyone. His goal was clear: secure a future, not only for himself but for those who depended on him. And he would stop at nothing to make that future a reality.
One day, after school, he sat on the steps of the orphanage, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the railing. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps.
"Kaito," Hana called out as she approached, her face flushed with excitement. "The orphanage is doing better than ever! The kids are happier, and we've even received some new donations. I'm really starting to believe that we're finally going to make it."
Kaito turned to her, offering a small smile. "Good. Everyone is so happy, Miss Hana... But you'll need to keep working hard to maintain this progress. Nothing lasts forever unless you put in the effort."
Miss Hana, a little startled, nodded, her eyes shining. "You're really the one who always thought far ahead, Kaito. I feel refreshed after talking to you."
He glanced at her with a quiet intensity. "I am nothing special, Miss Hana."
Later that evening, as Kaito sat at his desk in his small room, writing down plans for the next phase of his mission, his phone buzzed again.
It was Ayaka.
He sighed, knowing she had questions. "What now, Ayaka-san?"
He read the message silently.
Kaito, I'm starting to think I might have underestimated you. You've helped me a lot, but there's still a lot more I don't know about you. You keep doing things that no one else your age would even think about. I'm still curious about you, but for now, I'll focus on the business. I hope we can keep working together
Kaito smiled slightly, sending a short reply.
"We will. I'll be watching."
As he put his phone down, his thoughts turned inward. He wasn't doing this for the recognition, but Ayaka's continued curiosity bothered him. It wasn't just herāthere were others who might begin to notice his true capabilities. And he couldn't let that happen.
Not yet.
The boy glanced out the window, watching the moon rise over the orphanage. A quiet resolve settled in his chest. This was his second chance at life, and he would do everything in his power to shape it the way he wanted. He couldn't afford to let anyone get too close.
For now, he was content with the progress at the orphanage, but he knew there was still a long road ahead. And he would walk that road alone, if necessary.
