The next morning, Emperal stepped out of the inn, stretching slightly as the soft light of dawn illuminated the village. The air was crisp and fresh, and he decided to take a walk to familiarize himself with his surroundings. After strolling for a short while, he glanced down at his attire. His current clothes were barely covering his upper body, worn and torn from the events of the past few days.
"Looks like I need to get some proper clothes first," he muttered to himself, noticing a small shop just a few meters ahead.
Walking up to the shop, he stepped inside, where a blonde-haired elf greeted him from behind a counter. "Welcome, sir! How can I assist you today?" she said with a polite smile, though her eyes briefly betrayed a flicker of surprise before she composed herself. It was clear to Emperal that the rumors about his arrival had already spread through the village.
"I'd like a good-quality set of clothes," he replied simply, his tone firm but casual.
The receptionist nodded eagerly. "Of course, sir! Please wait a moment," she said, disappearing into a back room. Her movements seemed a little hurried, almost as if she was excited to serve him. After just a few minutes, she returned, carrying a neatly folded set of clothing.
"Here you go, sir," she said, presenting the garments to him. The set included black trousers, a red leather shirt, and a black robe. The trousers were made of soft, durable fabric that felt smooth to the touch yet sturdy enough to endure travel and wear. They were fitted but not restrictive, designed for both comfort and practicality. The red shirt caught his attention immediately—it was crafted from finely treated leather with a subtle sheen that seemed to catch the light in a way that emphasized its unique quality. The texture was smooth yet resilient, as if it could easily withstand rough conditions.
The black robe completed the set, its material flowing like water with every movement. It was lightweight but had an inner lining that hinted at its warmth, making it perfect for long journeys or chilly evenings. The edges of the robe were subtly embroidered with patterns resembling flowing vines, a nod to elven craftsmanship. The simple yet elegant design gave the attire a refined yet practical look, befitting someone who commanded respect.
Without wasting time, Emperal changed into the clothes. They fit him perfectly, accentuating his lean frame while providing the flexibility he needed. Running his fingers over the red leather shirt, he noticed its texture.
"This leather is interesting," he murmured, curiosity flickering in his eyes.
"That will be five Elyths, sir," the elf said, her tone respectful. Then, with a slight blush, she added, "And, if I may say, it suits you quite well."
Emperal glanced at her, noting her faintly reddened cheeks. Despite the scar on his face, his above-average height and his distinct red hair seemed to make an impression. He smiled faintly. "Thank you for the compliment," he said, handing over the payment.
After leaving the shop, he met up with Santri, who was waiting for him nearby. "Lord Xynos," Santri greeted with a nod. "Shall we go?"
Emperal nodded in response, and the two set off toward a large tree standing prominently at the edge of the village. As they walked, the surroundings gradually became denser with plant life. The greenery was vibrant, and though Emperal couldn't feel it, the Aetryn in the area grew noticeably denser as they approached their destination.
When they arrived, they found a tall elf standing outside the house near the tree. The man had a lean yet strong build, a relatively handsome face, and striking green hair. As their eyes met, Emperal immediately sensed something unusual about him.
"This man is strong," Emperal thought, his gaze narrowing slightly. Though his own abilities were still dormant, something about this elf's presence was unmistakably powerful.
The elf smiled warmly. "Lord Xynos, welcome to my humble abode," he said, his voice smooth and polite.
Emperal nodded slightly in return, acknowledging the greeting. The man gestured for them to enter, and they followed him into the house.
Once inside, the village head, who introduced himself as Rahuel, guided them to a seating area. "Lord Xynos, I trust you were able to rest well despite the modest accommodations," he said with a polite smile.
Emperal waved off the comment and extended a hand for a firm shake. "You're too humble, Village Head Rahuel," he replied with a faint smile.
Rahuel returned the gesture, then signaled to a maid standing nearby. She bowed and disappeared into another room, presumably to prepare refreshments.
After a moment of silence, Rahuel spoke again, his tone taking on a more serious edge. "I hope you've found the village to your liking so far," he began, "but there's a pressing matter I need to discuss with you."
Emperal leaned forward slightly, his interest piqued. "Go on," he said simply.
Rahuel glanced briefly out the window before continuing. "About six thousand kilometers from here, within the forest, there have been reports of unusual activity. It's something we can't ignore any longer."
He paused, letting the words settle. Though his tone remained composed, a subtle undercurrent of concern colored his voice. Emperal's gaze stayed steady, waiting for the conversation to unfold further.
"Some of the elven merchants passing through the forest have reported troubling incidents," Rahuel said gravely. "Goods stolen, caravans ambushed, and—worse still—several elves have gone missing. They've likely been kidnapped." His eyes darkened as he spoke, the weight of the issue evident in his posture.
"Under normal circumstances, I would have handled this matter myself or dispatched my trusted subordinates," Rahuel continued, his tone measured but resolute. "However, I am on the verge of a breakthrough into the next stage of my second cycle. At this critical juncture, I cannot risk stepping away for battles or distractions. That's why I'm turning to you, Lord Xynos, for assistance."
He paused briefly, as if gauging Emperal's reaction, before adding, "Of course, I will ensure you are well-compensated for this endeavor."
Emperal leaned back slightly, his expression thoughtful as he considered the request. He understood the severity of the situation, but he also recognized the opportunity it presented. After a moment of silence, he spoke.
"Alright," Emperal said, his voice calm but firm. "I'll accept this task." His eyes narrowed slightly, betraying a spark of interest. "But let's discuss the specifics of the reward. And I'll need a map of the forest."
Rahuel nodded, a flicker of relief crossing his face. "You'll have what you need."
As Rahuel gestured to a servant to fetch the necessary map and supplies, Emperal's thoughts wandered. This mission seemed simple enough on the surface, but something about the situation felt… off. He couldn't shake the nagging sense that the forest was more than just a bandit's hideout.
When the servant returned with the map, Rahuel handed it to Emperal. "This should guide you through the known paths. But be cautious," he warned, his tone grave. "Emperal took the map, glancing at the intricate markings and notes scrawled across its surface. "Noted," he replied, tucking the map into his pouch.
As he prepared to leave, Rahuel's voice stopped him. "Lord Xynos," he said, his eyes meeting Emperal's with an intensity that hadn't been there before. "There's one more thing you should know. Several of the merchants reported strange sightings—unfamiliar markings on trees, and whispers… as if the forest itself was alive and watching."
Emperal froze momentarily, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. Without a word, he nodded and turned to leave, his mind already racing with possibilities.
"Lord Xynos," Rahuel began, his brow furrowed. "Why can't I sense any Aetryn from you?"
Emperal froze mid-step, his back turned to Rahuel. The question lingered in the air, heavy and probing. Slowly, he turned to face the village head, his expression neutral.
Emperal after a moment, merely chuckled.
Rahuel's eyes narrowed slightly, clearly unsatisfied with the answer, but he nodded. "As you wish, Lord Xynos. Just… be careful out there. The forest holds more than just bandits."
Emperal gave a curt nod, his mind already racing with thoughts. Without another word, he stepped outside.
…
Outside, the sun was beginning its slow descent, casting long shadows across the village. Emperal glanced at the forest in the distance, its dense canopy appearing almost ominous under the fading light.
"Looks like this isn't going to be as straightforward as it seems," he muttered to himself, his lips curving into a faint, determined smirk.
As the forest loomed ahead, its secrets hidden within the depths of shadowy trees, Emperal knew one thing for certain: this journey would reveal more than just bandits.
