Chapter 37 - Chapter 36 : Shadows in Eryndor

The group set out at dawn, the forest slowly transitioning into rougher, harsher terrain. The Ruins of Eryndor loomed in the distance, their jagged silhouettes rising against the pale morning sky. The air grew colder with every step, and a strange sense of foreboding settled over them.

"We should reach the ruins by midday," Tarezuchi said, studying the Flameheart pendant's faint glow. It pulsed rhythmically, as though guiding them toward an unseen beacon.

"I don't like this," Rina murmured, her light magic flickering faintly around her fingertips. "There's something... unnatural about this place."

"She's not wrong," Kaida added, his swords shifting slightly in his grip. "Feels like we're being watched."

"Good," Akiyo said with a grin, though his eyes scanned the horizon warily. "Saves us the trouble of finding whatever's out there."

Ryomi rolled her eyes. "Or it means we're walking into a trap."

"Wouldn't be the first time," Kota muttered, his bow already in hand.

---

The ruins emerged from the mist as they crested a hill. Massive stone pillars, some toppled and others standing defiantly, jutted out of the earth like the skeletal remains of a forgotten civilization. Carvings covered every surface—ancient runes that seemed to hum faintly with energy.

"What is this place?" Kota asked, his voice hushed.

"Eryndor," Tarezuchi said, stepping forward. "The Keeper mentioned it was once a stronghold for the Elders of Creation. But it's been abandoned for centuries… or so they say."

"It doesn't look abandoned to me," Ryomi noted, pointing to the faint trails of footprints in the dust.

---

They moved cautiously into the ruins, weapons drawn and senses sharp. The air was heavy with an almost tangible energy, and every sound seemed amplified—the crunch of gravel underfoot, the whisper of the wind through the broken pillars.

Tarezuchi paused before a massive archway, the carvings glowing faintly as the Flameheart pendant pulsed against his chest.

"This is it," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

"What now?" Akiyo asked, resting his warhammer on his shoulder.

"We go deeper," Tarezuchi replied.

"Of course we do," Akiyo muttered.

---

The archway led to a descending spiral staircase, its steps worn smooth by time. As they moved further down, the light from above dimmed, replaced by the faint luminescence of the runes carved into the walls.

"It's like the ruins are alive," Rina said, her hand brushing against the carvings.

"Stay close," Kaida warned, his voice tense. "I don't trust this place."

---

The staircase opened into a vast chamber, its ceiling disappearing into darkness. In the center of the room stood a pedestal, its surface etched with intricate patterns. Floating above it was a crystalline shard, its light pulsing in time with the Flameheart pendant.

"That's it," Tarezuchi said, stepping toward the pedestal.

"Wait," Ryomi said sharply, grabbing his arm. "This is too easy."

As if in response to her words, the chamber trembled. The runes on the walls flared to life, casting the room in an eerie, shifting light.

From the shadows emerged figures cloaked in dark energy, their forms flickering as though caught between this world and another.

"Great," Akiyo muttered, raising his warhammer. "More shadow guys. Just what I needed."

---

The shadow figures moved with unnatural speed, their attacks silent but deadly. Tarezuchi barely dodged a strike aimed at his head, retaliating with a burst of flame from the pendant. The figure dissipated but reformed moments later, its movements even more erratic.

"They're not normal!" Rina shouted, her light magic blasting one of the figures. It shrieked, its form unraveling before vanishing completely.

"Use light-based attacks!" she called out.

Kaida adjusted immediately, his swords glowing with ethereal energy as he cut through another figure. "Got it!"

Akiyo swung his warhammer, creating a shockwave that momentarily scattered the figures. "This just keeps getting better," he grunted.

---

As the battle raged, Tarezuchi reached the pedestal, the pendant glowing brighter with every step. The crystalline shard seemed to resonate with its energy, the two lights merging into a blinding radiance.

"This has to be it," Tarezuchi muttered, reaching out to grab the shard.

The moment his fingers closed around it, the chamber trembled violently. The shadow figures let out a collective shriek before disintegrating, their energy absorbed by the shard.

"What just happened?" Kota asked, lowering his bow as the light dimmed.

Tarezuchi turned to face them, the shard glowing faintly in his hand. "I think we've awakened something."

---

The ground beneath them began to crack, the ruins groaning as though protesting their intrusion.

"We need to move!" Ryomi shouted, already heading for the staircase.

The group scrambled to escape as the chamber collapsed around them. Stones fell from the ceiling, the air filled with dust and the deafening roar of destruction.

They emerged into the open air just as the ruins caved in completely, the ground swallowing the entrance.

"Well," Akiyo said, panting. "That was fun."

Tarezuchi studied the shard in his hand, its glow steady but enigmatic. "This is just the beginning," he said quietly.

Rina placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll figure it out. Together."

Tarezuchi nodded, his resolve strengthening. The road ahead was uncertain, but they were no longer the same group that had set out on this journey.

And as they turned to face the horizon, the shard's light seemed to pulse in agreement, a beacon of hope against the gathering darkness.
