Chapter 38 - Chapter 37 : The warden of Lost souls

The group continued westward, the weight of the shard's mysterious power pressing heavily on them. The light breeze that swept across the barren landscape did little to ease the tension that hung in the air.

Tarezuchi gripped the shard tightly, his mind racing. The Flameheart pendant no longer glowed; its energy seemed drained, as though it had passed its purpose to the shard. What new powers this relic held was a question yet unanswered, and the ominous tremors from the ruins made it clear that the answers would not come easily.

"We should stop soon," Rina suggested, her voice tinged with exhaustion. "We've been moving nonstop since Eryndor collapsed."

"Agreed," Kaida said, scanning their surroundings. "We don't know who—or what—might have seen the ruins fall."

Ryomi frowned. "If we stop now, we risk giving the enemy time to track us."

Kota adjusted the strap of his quiver. "We'll be no good to anyone if we collapse before the next fight."

---

They found shelter in the shadow of a rocky outcrop, where a lone tree struggled against the elements. The air felt still, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

As the group set up camp, Akiyo dropped onto a boulder with a heavy sigh. "Alright, someone explain what just happened back there. One minute, we're fighting shadow things. Next, the shard sucks them all up and buries us alive. What gives?"

Tarezuchi sat cross-legged, placing the shard carefully on the ground before him. Its crystalline surface shimmered faintly, almost alive. "I don't know," he admitted. "But it's tied to the Flameheart pendant. When I touched it, I felt… connected to something ancient, something far beyond what we understand."

Rina crouched beside him, her eyes fixed on the shard. "It's unlike anything I've seen. The energy feels old but not hostile."

"Old doesn't mean harmless," Ryomi muttered, leaning against a nearby rock. "We still don't know what it's capable of—or what it could attract."

Kaida nodded. "The ruins were guarded for a reason. Whatever power this holds, it's dangerous."

---

As the group debated, the shard's glow intensified briefly, drawing their attention. The light coalesced into a faint figure—a translucent humanoid form, its features obscured.

Everyone jumped to their feet, weapons drawn.

"Wait," Tarezuchi said, stepping closer. "It's not attacking."

The figure's voice echoed in their minds, its tone calm but commanding. *"I am the Warden of Lost Souls. You who have awakened the shard, state your purpose."*

Tarezuchi hesitated, then straightened his posture. "We're seeking the truth about the Ascendant Seals and the power they hold. Our goal is to stop the darkness spreading across the land."

The Warden regarded him silently, its form flickering. *"The shards were created to seal away chaos. To wield one is to bear the burden of its power—and the responsibility it demands. Do you understand this?"*

Tarezuchi nodded. "I do. We're prepared to do whatever it takes."

*"You may believe that now,"* the Warden said, its voice heavy with warning. *"But the trials ahead will test not only your strength but your resolve. The shard will amplify your power, but it will also amplify your fears and doubts. Only those with unwavering hearts can master it."*

---

The Warden's gaze shifted to the rest of the group. *"This journey is not his alone. Each of you bears a role, a bond that strengthens or weakens your collective fate. Remember this: unity is your greatest weapon."*

Rina stepped forward, her voice steady. "We've already faced trials together. Whatever comes next, we'll face it as one."

The Warden inclined its head. *"Then heed my words. The shard's full potential lies dormant. To awaken it, you must seek the Eternal Spire, where its power can be harmonized. But beware—the darkness you seek to fight will pursue you relentlessly."*

With that, the Warden's form dissolved into a cascade of light, leaving the shard pulsing faintly in its wake.

---

The group sat in silence for a moment, the weight of the Warden's words sinking in.

"So, the Eternal Spire," Akiyo said finally, breaking the silence. "Sounds like another place full of things that want to kill us."

Kaida smirked. "Would you prefer to stay here and wait for Seishin to find us again?"

"Fair point," Akiyo conceded.

Tarezuchi picked up the shard, its surface warm against his palm. "The Warden was clear. We have to keep moving. The Eternal Spire is our next destination."

"And the darkness?" Ryomi asked, her tone sharp.

"We'll face it when it comes," Tarezuchi said, his voice resolute.

---

That night, as the others rested, Tarezuchi sat alone with the shard. Its faint glow illuminated his features, casting long shadows across the rocky ground.

The Warden's words echoed in his mind. *The shard will amplify your fears and doubts.*

He clenched his fist around the shard, his thoughts drifting to his family and the burden of his bloodline.

"We'll master this," he whispered to himself. "I won't let the darkness win."

High above, the stars shimmered faintly, their light offering a fragile sense of hope.
