A Troubled Dawn
Jin woke before dawn, the Abyssal energy thrumming faintly within him. Sleep had become a luxury since the labyrinth's collapse, as the Abyss constantly pulled at his consciousness. Lia sat nearby, her weapon in hand, sharpening it with practiced ease.
"You didn't sleep," Jin said, his voice breaking the silence.
Lia didn't look up. "Neither did you. How could I, knowing what's coming?"
Jin exhaled, the weight of her words pressing down on him. The Syndicate, Alaric, the celestials—they were all circling like predators, waiting for him to falter. Yet beneath it all, the Abyss itself seemed to whisper warnings of a greater threat.

The Forgotten Ruins
Later that day, Jin and Lia ventured to the outskirts of Arcadia, where the ruins of an ancient gate lay hidden. The Abyss had led Jin here, its energy pulling him toward the overgrown remnants of a structure that seemed to hum with forgotten power.
"What is this place?" Lia asked, scanning the ruins.
Jin knelt by the gate, running his fingers over the intricate carvings. Symbols unlike any he had seen before glowed faintly beneath his touch. "A gate," he said quietly. "Not to another world, but to another realm of existence."
As he spoke, the Abyss within him stirred violently, reacting to the gate's dormant energy. Shadows began to ripple outward, seeping into the carvings and igniting a pulse of dark light.
Lia stepped back, her hand on her weapon. "Jin, what's happening?"
Jin's voice was strained. "The Abyss knows this place. It's waking something up."

The Gatekeeper
Before they could react, the air shifted, and the ruins began to tremble. A figure emerged from the swirling shadows—a massive, armored being with glowing eyes. Its voice was deep and resonant, carrying an authority that froze the air around them.
"You who bear the Abyss, why have you come?"
Jin straightened, meeting the figure's gaze. "I didn't come here by choice. The Abyss led me."
The being tilted its head, its expression unreadable behind the glowing helm. "The Abyss recognizes this gate as a link to its origin. It stirs because the gate's power is fading. To awaken it fully, you must prove your worth."
Lia stepped forward, her voice defiant. "He doesn't need to prove anything to you. Who are you, anyway?"
The figure's glowing eyes flared. "I am Kaelith, the Gatekeeper, bound to this threshold since its creation. If the bearer of the Abyss wishes to claim its legacy, he must face the Trial of Shadows."

The Trial of Shadows
Without warning, the ruins shifted, enveloping Jin and Lia in a swirling vortex of darkness. When the chaos subsided, they found themselves in a vast, shadowy plane. The ground was smooth and reflective, like obsidian, and the air hummed with tension.
Kaelith's voice echoed around them. "The Trial will test your strength, resolve, and understanding of the Abyss. Fail, and you will be consumed by the shadows you seek to control."
Jin glanced at Lia. "Stay close. Whatever happens, we face it together."
The first challenge appeared as a wave of shadowy creatures, their forms twisting and writhing. Jin's Abyssal energy flared as he struck them down, each blow more precise than the last. Lia fought beside him, her blade cutting through the darkness with deadly efficiency.
But as the trial progressed, the challenges became more personal. Jin faced visions of his past—his failures, his regrets, and the lives he couldn't save. The Abyss amplified his doubts, whispering that he was unworthy of its power.
"You think you can control me?" the Abyss hissed. "You are nothing without me."
Jin gritted his teeth, his voice steady. "I am more than this power. You don't control me—I will control you."

The Abyss Answers
At the trial's climax, Jin stood alone in a sea of shadows. The Abyss coalesced into a towering figure—a dark reflection of himself. It spoke with his voice but carried an edge of malice.
"You can't escape me," it said. "I am your strength, your curse, your destiny. Accept me, or be consumed."
Jin didn't hesitate. "You're wrong. The Abyss is part of me, but it doesn't define me. I'll use its power, but I won't let it use me."
With those words, he unleashed a surge of Abyssal energy, the shadows bending to his will. The dark figure shattered, and the Trial of Shadows came to an end.

The Gate Opens
Back in the ruins, Kaelith watched as Jin and Lia reappeared, their forms glowing faintly with residual energy. The Gatekeeper inclined his head, a sign of respect.
"You have passed the trial," Kaelith said. "The Abyss acknowledges your strength, but this is only the beginning. The gate is now yours to command, but its power comes with responsibility. Use it wisely, or it will destroy you."
The gate behind Kaelith began to glow, its dormant energy reignited. Jin felt the Abyss within him respond, its whispers momentarily silenced.
Lia placed a hand on his shoulder. "You did it, Jin. But what now?"
Jin's gaze hardened as he looked at the glowing gate. "We find out what lies beyond—and why the Abyss led me here."
In the distance, unseen by either of them, Park Hae In and Lord Alaric observed the unfolding events. Alaric's expression was one of calculation, while Park Hae In's smile held a hint of admiration.
"The boy grows stronger," Alaric murmured. "But strength without control is nothing. Let's see how far he can go before he falls."
Park Hae In chuckled softly. "Or rises beyond any of us."
