Chapter 26 - Chapter 26

AMELIA

After another unfortunate outcome at Mr Patrick's office I headed straight home to get some sleep as has been my routine for the past few weeks. I'm trying my best to stay calm because I don't even have the strength to cry or worry. I just needed to find a way to sort out all those endless bills one after another.

Getting home an acrid odor greeted my nostrils as I opened the door and as I walked into the living room the offensive smell got even worse. My clothes were scattered all over the floor and cushion chairs. I walked into my room only to find it worse than the living room and there I saw my step mom and her daughter. Sandra and my step mom were ransacking my bed and what was left of my clothes was scattered at the entrance of the bathroom. Even a burglar would not put this much effort into disorganising the place. I was so incensed that every resolve in me to keep calm went out the window.

"What's the meaning of all these?!" I asked, my voice now high pitched.

"Where have you been hiding your money?" Sandra snapped at me, like a mad dog.

"Why should that be your business?" I retorted.

"So that's what you're going to say right? Bills are piling up and all you care about at this time is yourself?" My step mom fired at me, with eyes burning like that of a dragon.

"That doesn't give you any right to come to my room," I said and she gave me a very sharp look as she proceeded to disorganized my reading table.

"Stop doing this, what exactly is your problem?" I said with a firm voice.

"You've been going to work for the past few days without leaving money to feed and take care of bills. Who's gonna bear the responsibilities? Whatever frivolity you're planning with the money meant for everyone, you better kill the idea cause it won't work!" Sandra said, stepping on one of my shirts.

The audacity of this one. She is speaking like I owe her. This is my fucking money we are talking about here!

"At least I go out to work, all you do is sit around and eat like a pregnant pig!" I said and I am sure that struck a chord in her body.

"Who do you think you're talking to?" My step mom said with flared nostrils. She looked like an angry cow. Apparently it struck the wrong body.

"I was talking to Sandra! But the same can be applied to you too. You know you should be ashamed to call yourself a mother. You're the worst mother to ever exist. Leading your child to misbehave. Like what the hell?!" I yelled, totally losing control.

I could see her big eyeballs grow even wider with surprise and rage. She started walking towards me with the intention of slapping me but Sandra was faster.

Ahhh!

I felt the sting on my face and before I knew it another one landed on my cheek again, burning my flesh. I stumbled back holding my chin, too stunned to speak.

"You little runt! How dare you?!" My stepmom thundered.

I wanted to react but before I could do anything Sandra grabbed hold of me and began pulling my hair violently while her mother began assaulting me with blows, slaps and kicks. I tried my best to fight back by using my teeth, as I bit hard into my step mom's skin causing her to stagger backwards. Seeing that I was left with only Sandra, I pushed her away from my body and ran out of the room for my dare life.

These lunatics want to kill me!

"Come back here!" I heard one of them yell.

Dashing into the kitchen and grabbing the bread knife from the plate rack, I yelled in frustration and started swinging the knife angrily at Sandra who was approaching me.

"Mom, she's got a knife!" she shrieked as she stepped back.

"If you take a step closer, I won't hesitate to use this knife on you!" I screamed.

Both mother and daughter knew that it was time to back off. Cowards! They couldn't even notice that I was holding a blunt knife.

"She's gone crazy," my step mom said with fright in her voice as she pulled her daughter away.

I couldn't care less about the outcome of this whole episode now. I just needed an avenue to vent my anger. Besides, they were the ones who started the whole issue. With my heart pounding like crazy and my body trembling like I had a terrible fever, I staggered into my room and banged the door behind me, bolting it from inside

I went into the bathroom for a cold bath but even the bathroom wasn't left out in the raid. The bar of soap was left on the floor, my sponge was hanging from the toilet bowl. The laundry basket and the few clothes inside were turned upside down. I would deal with all this mess later but for now. I just want to take my bath and sleep.

After dousing a generous amount of cold water on my body, I stepped out of the bathroom and lay down on my bed naked. Now that everywhere is calm, the effects of their assaults begin to creep back in.

My head is aching badly, my body is still trembling and my throat is sore from shouting. I close my eyes, waiting for sleep to take me but tears keep flowing from my eyes. My spirit is broken and I am tired of struggling but I just can't give up.

KATE

Another day same Liam. He has failed to show up for an important meeting but what he doesn't know this time around is that father is here. I texted him to warm him about it but clearly he is ignoring me as he didn't open my messages.

Well since dad is here I guess it's my time to shine.

I gathered my papers into my folder and got up to address the room full of people. A few were murmuring amongst themselves concerning the proposal plan which was just pitched while others were staring at me with wary eyes. I flashed a sly smile and stood up to round up the meeting.

"Well, ladies and gentlemen, I believe I have done a very good job in turning this misfortune event around. From the survey that was conducted, the consumers have given a positive review of the measures put in place by me," my voice was loud and firm in the speakers.

"Now, unless anybody has a better plan, it would be in the company's best interest to put behind any prejudice..." I proceeded further.

A few people shifted uncomfortably in their seats, avoiding eye contact with me. My dad, the chairman, was seated at the far end of the room, listening to all that was happening. He had not said a word since the beginning of the meeting. He was just quietly observing. I have always found it hard to read that man, such a very unpredictable personality.

"Impressive Miss Kate. But how can we be sure of a successful outcome?" Just my father's words commanded respect as everyone focused on him.

"I've done my due diligence sir. Unless the world suddenly starts hating music, we are good to go." I winked and the room began to hum with chuckles.

I could see a smile of approval form on Dad's face.

"I guess we have come to the end of our discussion. Thank you very much for listening, I hope to see you all at the opening party later this week." I wrapped up.

And with that, the meeting came to an end. I could sense an air of approval compared to when the meeting began. I have decided to work hard to get the approval of the hotshots in the company. Whatever it takes, I would excel.
