AMELIA
I woke up feeling bright and energetic for the day. I was ready to take on the day with a positive mind. Sitting up straight I looked through my phone to plan my itinerary for the day. I had five places to go for my job application. If I could split myself into those five places, I would take on all the five jobs because I really need money. Like seriously!
Making a mental note of some things I prepped myself to head out but first I have to take my bath. I made sure my door was properly locked this time to prevent the last incident from happening again. I was not so surprised that Sandra and her mother didn't take sides with me, but I was more annoyed by the lack of sympathy, considering that I'm a woman like them.
They should have understood what I was going through, but instead, they showed how wicked and heartless they are by supporting Benjamin despite knowing what I said was the truth.
Since I know no one got my back it's left to me to keep myself safe. So I have to always make sure my door is locked so such doesn't repeat itself again. Knowing the kind of coward Benjamin is, he may come prowling again, and who knows what he would do this time? Grabbing my towel from its normal position I entered the bathroom.
After spending twenty minutes getting ready- both bathing and getting dressed. I set out.
Today would be good to me! I just have that conviction. However asI closed the door behind me my stomach began to rumble like there was a war being waged inside of me.
I am dead, hungry!
I needed to eat something but there was no food in the fridge or anywhere else in the house and I had no money. All I had on me was my t-fare for the day. If I don't put something in my tummy I swear I might just collapse on the floor on my way but there is no food so what should I do? I had to improvise as I took one big gulp from my water bottle and set out.
I hope that does the trick.
Getting on the bus, I checked through my bag to make sure I wasn't missing anything important and everything was intact. Everything seemed perfect except for my grumbling stomach. By 8:45 a.m., I had arrived at my first stop for the day. It was a fast food joint that needed waiters to work the day shift. Standing just before the entrance I brought out my phone and did a quick scroll through it, searching for the online ad of the job and once I found it I pushed the large glass door open.
The place was nice and serene. It was more of a restaurant than a fast food place. The murals on the walls fitted perfectly, and the lighting was just right and I found myself turning around 360 degrees to get a better view of the place. I knew I would enjoy working here because of the nice view, even though the place was quite hot as the ventilation in here is very poor.
As I was busy looking around and inspecting the place a lady in a blue dress with glasses walked towards me, probably noticing I needed attention.
"Good morning. Would you like to order anything?" She said with a faint smile.
"um… Good morning ma'am. I'm actually here for the advert placement about a job vacancy," I answered, showing her my phone.
"Oh, Okay! Welcome. Please follow me." Her tone became a bit serious.
I followed behind her like a sheep following its shepherd. We walked to the other end of the large space. There were two doors in front of us. On the first, a large metal door with a plastic board on it "staff only, keep away" was the inscription. The other side was a fancy wooden door and the lady I was following knocked on it.
'Please wait here for a moment," she said before going in. Few seconds later she ushered me in.
It was a large office painted in a bright shade of blue which is the same color of the main dining area. On one side of the room, there were several laurels and awards hung on the wall and beside the book shelf a chef's uniform branded like a trophy. The book shelf itself was stacked with lots of big books- cooking and recipe books I am guessing.
The boss is a petite woman in her early fifties. She had a friendly look which made me feel welcome and relaxed.
"Hello, Miss Amelia Walker. Please have your seat," she said as she scrolled through her laptop.
"Thank you," I smiled, taking my seat.
"I went through the form you filled on our website, and your cv is not so bad. I dare say I am impressed," she said, raising her head up to face me.
"Thank you ma'am", I replied, feeling quite confident.
"Would you like some coffee? Paula, please brew two cups of coffee," she instructed the lady that brought me here.
Paula nodded and went on her way.
Our interview lasted for about fifteen minutes. She was a very pleasant woman, and I felt very relaxed throughout the interview. At the end of our discussion she asked me to wait outside and as I sat outside, waiting for her to make her decision I was feeling very confident about the outcome…
After a few minutes, Paula came outside. Her expression had changed from a welcoming one to a hostile one. I wondered if I was the one she was approaching until she called my name.
"Miss Walker, unfortunately, we can't offer you employment at this time," she said with all seriousness.
"What?!" I blurted out.
"I'm sorry, but your experience does not fit what we are looking for. Thank you for considering working with us," she said, ready to leave.
"Wait a minute. Where's this coming from?" I questioned, trying to make sense with the sudden change of favor and attitude.
"I suppose you'll see yourself out immediately? Please do before I call security." Her hostility was increasing by the second.
I was left weak as she turned around and left.
Totally shocked by the turn of events, it was a struggle for me to get up as my legs felt so weak and I was feeling the effect of the hunger even more but at that moment I hardened my heart as I was determined not to give uo. It's their loss anyways..
I made for my next destination, which was a ten minute walk. Thanks to the coffee I had, I was fired up to continue the journey.
The second place I applied for was actually a hospital. The ad stated that they needed a cleaner and that's what I am. Stepping into the gate I was overshadowed by exhaustion as I rested my hands on my knees.
"Come on. You got this," I motivated myself into action.
As I walked inside the compound my eyes were roving about, looking for the admin building and when I spotted it I matched towards there. From the unique structure of the place, I knew that this was a medical center meant for the elite and not regular citizens.
I went to the receptionist to make enquiries.
"Hello," I greeted, forcing myself to smile despite being exhausted and hungry.
"Hello, good morning," she answered, tapping on her keyboard, barely glancing at me.
"I'm here for the job interview," I said.
"Your name please?"
"Amelia Walker."
"Okay please have a seat," she directed.
I sat on the metal bench that was directly facing her desk, there I waited for about fifteen minutes as she attended to different people…
A lady in a red dress walked up to me."Hi, excuse me. Which way is it for the job interview?", she asked. She looked like she was going for a party rather than a job interview.
"I don't really know you can ask the receptionist," I replied softly as I had become really weak..
"Okay, thanks." She said and left.
I saw the receptionist direct her to where the interview was going to be held.
Why was she wasting time then? Maybe she had forgotten that I was there. I walked up to her, feeling slightly annoyed.
"Excuse me, I've been waiting he
re for the past fifteen minutes, and that lady just came, and you let her through. That's not nice…" I felt really hurt.
"We can't interview you for this job. Please leave now", she said, cutting me short.
"What? What's going on?"
She gave me the silent treatment..
"Can you at least explain why you won't interview me?"
"I'm just following orders here. There's nothing I can do. Please leave before I call security on you," she said and my eyes dilated
