Chapter 8 - Family

"Mom! I'm back," a twelve-year-old boy exclaimed, hanging his jacket and backpack. He kicked off his sneakers, revealing a clean pair of white socks, and dashed to the kitchen, hoping to find what he was looking for."Hi, honey! How was school today?" his mother asked, beaming with a smile. She was cooking dinner and wearing her newly bought apron over her police uniform."School was boring," the boy replied, rolling his eyes. "Loads of assignments, and I'm starving.""I'm almost done with dinner," she said. "Go freshen up and come down right away, okay?""Alright," he replied, heading to his room to freshen up and change into something more casual."Davon, pick up your food on the counter," his mother called from downstairs. "Your dad will be home soon, and his food is already on the dining table. I'm off for my night shift.""OK, bye, Mom. Be careful," he replied, rushing down to the kitchen."Bye, love," she answered.Davon and his family had lived in the city of Jugg since he was born. He was now in high school, and they had always lived in peace and love. Both his parents were cops (Special Agents) and had always made time for him.Their city was generally peaceful, except for a few troublemakers who broke the law to survive.Davon had always looked up to his parents but never wanted to join the police force. He wanted to be strong and able to save himself when needed. After eating, Davon worked on his assignments, wondering why he had to find x when y was not given. The door opened, breaking his concentration. A man who looked like an older version of him appeared, revealing a perfect set of teeth."Hey, man," his father, Simeon, greeted, moving quickly over to where Davon sat. "What's popping? Do you need help with that algebra?""Hey, Dad," Davon responded, feeling excited and a bit nervous. "I'd love your help, but you should go freshen up and eat the food Mom prepared for you. It's on the dining table.""Alright, big man," Simeon said, grinning. "

Simeon sat down next to Davon and started helping him with his algebra homework. As they worked together, Davon asked his father about his day."Hey, Dad, how was work today?" Davon asked, scribbling down some notes.Simeon leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes. "It was a long day, son. We're working on a tough case right now. But I think we're making progress."Davon's eyes widened with interest. "What's the case about?"Simeon hesitated for a moment before answering. "We're investigating a string of burglaries in the area. The thief seems to be targeting houses with security systems, and we can't figure out how they're getting past them."Davon's mind started racing. "That sounds like a tough one. But I know you'll catch the guy, Dad. You're the best detective in the city!"Simeon chuckled and ruffled Davon's hair. "Thanks for the vote of confidence, kiddo. But it's going to take some hard work and smart thinking to crack this case."As they continued working on Davon's homework, Simeon's phone suddenly rang. He answered it, listened for a moment, and then stood up."I have to go, son. Duty calls!"Davon nodded and watched as his father hurried out the door. He felt a sense of pride knowing that his father was working hard to keep their city safe.

Davon tried to focus on his homework, but his mind kept wandering. He was thinking about his father's job as a detective and how exciting it must be to solve mysteries.Just then, his phone buzzed with a text from Samantha. "Hey, what's up?" she asked.Davon replied, "Not much, just doing homework. How about you?"Samantha responded, "I'm good. Just studying for my own exams. But I was thinking, we should hang out soon!"Davon agreed, "Yeah, that sounds great! We can study together and then grab some food or something."Samantha suggested, "How about we come over to your place? I've been wanting to try out that new video game you got."Davon was excited, "Really? You want to come over and play video games? That sounds awesome!"

Davon's father, Simeon, walked into the living room, where Davon and Samantha were engrossed in their game. "Hey, kids! How's it going?" he asked, dropping his keys on the coffee table.Davon and Samantha exchanged a look, then Davon said, "We're just playing some video games, Dad."Simeon smiled and sat down beside them. "Mind if I join in?"Samantha grinned. "Not at all, Mr. Simeon! We'd love to have you play with us."Simeon chuckled and picked up a controller. "Alright, let's do this! But don't expect me to go easy on you two."As they played, Simeon shared some stories about his day, including a funny anecdote about a suspect who tried to escape from the police station.Davon and Samantha laughed and joked, having a great time. After a while, Simeon suggested they take a break and get some snacks from the kitchen. As they munched on chips and popcorn, Davon asked his father about his job. "Dad, what's the most challenging case you've ever worked on?"Simeon thought for a moment before responding. "Well, there was this one case where a wealthy businessman's daughter went missing. The investigation was tough, but we eventually found her safe and sound."Samantha's eyes widened. "That sounds so cool! Did you have to go undercover or anything?"Simeon smiled. "Actually, yes, I did. I posed as a bodyguard to gather information. It was a tough job, but we solved the case in the end."

Just as they were about to start playing again, the doorbell rang. "I'll get it!" Davon exclaimed, jumping up from the couch. He opened the door to find Aaron, his friend from school, standing on the porch with a big grin on his face. "Hey, man! I heard you were having a game night and I didn't want to miss out!"Davon laughed and clapped Aaron on the back. "Dude, you're just in time! We were just about to start playing again."Aaron's eyes widened as he took in the scene in the living room. "Whoa, you've got a whole crew here! Samantha, Simeon, what's up guys?"Samantha smiled and waved, while Simeon nodded in greeting. "Hey, Aaron! Come on in, man. We've got plenty of room."As Aaron joined the group, Davon's father suggested they order some pizza to fuel their gaming session. "Sounds good to me!" Aaron exclaimed, already grabbing a controller and joining the game. With the addition of Aaron, the competition got fierce, but everyone was having a blast. As the night wore on, they took breaks to grab slices of pizza and joke around.

Just as they were about to start another round of games, Rachel called home from her night shift at the police station. "Hey, hon! How's everything going?" she asked, sounding a bit tired.Simeon got up to answer the phone. "Hey, Rach! Everything's good here. The kids are having a blast. How about you? How's work?"Rachel sighed. "It's been a long night. We've got a lot of cases to work on and not enough leads. But I'll be home soon to take over and let you get some rest."Simeon nodded, even though she couldn't see him. "Alright, sounds good. Drive safe, and we'll see you soon."As he hung up the phone, Davon asked, "Mom's coming home soon?"Simeon nodded. "Yeah, she'll be here soon to take over and let me get some rest."

The doorbell rang. "I'll get it!" Davon exclaimed, jumping up from the couch. But to his surprise, it wasn't his mother at the door. It was a delivery guy holding a big package. "Hey, is this the Simeon residence?"Davon nodded, confused. "Yeah, that's us. But we didn't order anything."The delivery guy shrugged. "Well, someone sent you a package. Sign here, please."As Davon signed for the package, he wondered who could have sent it and what it could be.As he brought the package inside, Samantha asked, "What is it?"Davon shook his head. "I don't know. But it's addressed to us."Simeon, who had been quiet until now, spoke up. "Let me take a look."He examined the package carefully, then opened it. Inside, they found a small device that looked like a tracking device.Simeon's expression turned serious. "This is a police-issue tracking device. Someone must have sent it to us for a reason."

As he turned the device over in his hand, a small piece of paper fell out. Davon picked it up and examined it. "What's this?" he asked.Simeon took the paper from Davon and unfolded it. His eyes scanned the message, and his face went pale."What is it, Dad?" Davon asked, feeling a sense of unease.Simeon hesitated before answering. "It's a message. It says... 'Stop investigating the case, or your family will be in danger.'"The room fell silent. Samantha's eyes widened in fear, and Davon felt a chill run down his spine."What case?" Samantha asked, her voice barely above a whisper.Simeon's eyes locked onto Davon's. "The case I've been working on. The one I told you about earlier."Davon's mind raced. "But why would someone threaten us?"Simeon's expression turned grim. "Because they're trying to cover something up. And they'll stop at nothing to keep it hidden."
