The temple loomed before us like a petrified corpse, its once-imposing walls suffocated under the serpentine grip of ancient roots. The gnarled tendrils coiled around columns, strangling gargoyles whose grotesque faces had been eroded by rain and resentment. Moss devoured the shattered stained glass, filtering a venomous green light that stained the air with a sickly glow. Each step I took echoed through the silence, as if the floor slabs whispered the names of those who had perished here.
