Chapter 45 - 78 A.C. II

(Third Person POV)

Inside the Sept, Maegelle knelt down in front of the altar in the center of the building. She was lighting candles in honor of the gods. Her beautiful and fair skin reflected the light of the candles as the shimmer was seen in her eyes. She was wearing a Septa's outfit, her hair hidden by the hood that they normally wear, her slim figure outlined by the outfit as she was on her knees.

After lighting the candles, she placed her hands together and closed her eyes to begin her prayer as some other Septas walked past her.

As she prayed, the building was silent; only the faint footsteps of the passing Septas were heard. The former Princess was focused solely on her own prayer, feeling a sense of serenity spread throughout her body.

Maegelle, unlike her siblings, found great comfort in praying. She was pious and had always shown great interest in the Faith. To spend time alone, away from her siblings, and pray in silence had always brought her great comfort and joy.

She was a Septa, godsworn to the Faith. She was a kind child with a great heart, guiding her younger sister Daella when she was younger. Everyone in the city appreciated the former Princess and were pleased that she had turned to the Faith so loyally.

But there was a problem; She was already promised to someone else. And this person was not someone to cross.

And The King was aware of this fact.

As she prayed, an older Septa walked up behind her.

"Septa Maegelle..." she said in a soft tone, "How long will you stay here and pray? Septon Barth had requested your presence later."

Maegelle did not look up, "Just a little longer."

"Very well." the Septa said before walking away

Suddenly, without warning, the candles were turned off, which alarmed the other Septas. It was like a quick gust of cold wind had swept through the room and shut off the light, leaving nothing but the natural light shining through the colored glass.

Maegelle opened her eyes and looked at the candles, her hands still in a prayer position, "Hm?"

Then, footsteps were heard behind her.

"So this is where you come and worship your gods?" a voice said

Maegelle did not look back, merely closed her eyes and continued praying, ignoring the voice and who it belonged to.

Behind her, the god of war and death stood with his hands in his coat's pockets. He had a curious smile on his face as he looked around, scanning the structure.

"Interesting." He said, "Not bad. You put some effort in this stuff."

"W-Who are you?" a Septa said, "what are you doing here?"

Drakken ignored her and looked at Maegelle, who was still kneeling down, "You. Girl."

Maegelle opened her eyes, "Yes?"

"Targaryen, eh?" Drakken said with a smirk, "So you're the one, huh?"

"Which one may that be, good Ser?" Maegelle said as she still had her hands in a praying position

"Ser? I'm no Knight." Drakken said as he glanced at the other Septa, "What are you still doing here? Get lost!"

Drakken's eye glowed red, intimidating the Septa.

"I-I'll get Septon Barth...." The Septa said as she scurried away

Drakken then looked at Maegelle and then at the ceiling, "So....you're one of them, huh?" He said, "A religious fanatic."

"Fanatic?" Maegelle said softly, "Please refrain from insulting the Faith."

"I'd never understand why you humans so willingly choose to worship false gods. Absent gods." Drakken said, "What is the point?"

"What is the point of worshipping a god?" Maegelle said, "To show our Faith."

"You have your faith in the wrong gods." Drakken said, "A true god stands before you. Why put your love and faith in those things that do not even show themselves to you? Why put your hopes so high on something that doesn't answer you?"

"Why do we do what we do, you ask?" Maegelle said as she leaned forward and kept praying, "Because it is the nature of men. To believe. To have faith. Even if you think it is pointless, our gods are real. They are not absent. They are here, with you and me, at this moment."

Drakken looked around, "Where?" He asked, "I do not sense another divine presence. I don't feel their power, I cannot see their divine form, I cannot hear their holy heartbeat. Where are these gods, girl? Tell me."

"Must gods show themselves to their worshippers and prove that they're worthwhile?" Maegelle asked

"That's the entire point." Drakken said, "When a deity is worshipped, it is their duty to show signs that they exist, that they have influence over their followers. That is what religion is. A true god shows favor to their people. They must have a presence in their religion, no matter how minimal it must be, they need to be there! And what I see here is nothing but empty buildings and no presence of seven divine gods."

"The Father grants justice to those that deserve it, The Mother grants children to those that deserve it, The Warrior protects men when they go to battle and grants them favor, The Smith always keeps sailors and their ships safe, The Maiden ensures that young women like myself are always safe from harm, The Crone always gives wisdom to those who need like my Father, and The Stranger is always walking the land, guiding souls to the other side...." Maegelle said, "You say that they have no presence, but that is presence enough."

"What you're describing is the natural order. And I don't want to hear that they're part of the Natural Order. Justice? Fertility? Wisdom? Safety?" Drakken said with a scowl, "Those aren't the work of gods, they're just occurrences that happen naturally! Justice is always served by a man or a woman. Fertility is simply a natural factor for a woman or a male, not some divine being. It can be enhanced but that is beside the point. Men become wise from the experiences they have not because of some Old Hag that speaks in their ears. And safety? It is either Power that makes one safe. Do you worship gods that represent those aspects of the world? It makes no sense!"

"What makes a god, in your eyes, My Lord?" Maegelle asked with a calm and gentle voice

"A god is a being worshipped for having unnatural and nearly unobtainable power over a domain. You are either born a god or you become one but either way, you exist. You become one and you are worshipped, eventually. And no matter how many followers or worshippers you have, it doesn't change that you are what you are; A God." Drakken said, "Little girl, you kneel with your back turned to the God of War and Death. Show me some damn respect."

"You, a god? I hear your voice perfectly. You sound exactly like any ordinary man." Maegelle said, "God of War and Death? What a crude deity you must be....should it be true. Tell me, My Lord, how many worshippers do you have, should you be an actual god? You insult my Faith but The Seven has millions of worshippers spread across the Realm. You claim they do not exist but their miracles happen every single day. Every single little detail is due to their planning, even you coming inside this very building."

Drakken's eye twitched, "What did you say?"

"What makes you think that the Seven do not exist when the fact that you stand inside their place of worship could be something that they themselves have planned?" Maegelle said, "You claim that my gods, the very beings I have nothing but Faith in do not exist, but is their grace that surrounds me that allows me to keep my wits about when in the presence of you, Drakken."

Drakken narrowed his eyes, "So you do know."

"I have known for some time." Maegelle said, "My Faith is unwavering, I know that it protects me from your malice. And the fact that you are here tells me that my gods are watching, testing my Faith."

"You dare say to me that me standing in here is happening because they planned it?" Drakken said with an angry tone, "That is the worst bullshit I have ever fucking heard. So every single little thing that happens, it is all due to the Gods. No matter how cruel or good it is, the Gods are the reason for it. Give me a break. Your gods are not here, they don't exist. Everything that happens in a world like this is always due to probability, to chance, not deities. If they do exist, they don't give a shit about you. The Gods are Cruel, is something I have heard for a long time in this wretched land. Well, I am well aware of that. The Gods are indeed cruel. I am one of them. I am the only god in these lands and trust me when I tell you this, your gods won't plan what I will do to your Father when I see him again."

"My Father will be protected by the grace of The Seven." Maegelle said

"Stand up, girl." Drakken said with a scowl, "And look at me. Now."

Maegelle opened her eyes and let out a sigh, "If you wish."

She stood up and gently patted her skirt, turning around and looking at Drakken.

Drakken took a single step forward and looked at Maegelle who maintained her composure, "Look at my eyes and tell me what you see girl, should you be so attuned to divinity." He said seriously, "Tell me what these eyes tell you, the eyes of a god."

Maegelle looked at his eyes, his red eyes. She noticed that they were slit, resembling a dragon's. Something that nobody else had noticed the entire time Drakken had been in this world.

"Hm...Oh...." Maegelle said softly

Drakken raised his eyebrow, "Huh?" He said, "What do you see?"

"I see...." Magelle said as she frowned slightly,

"Emptiness."
