Chapter 9 - [9] More members

As Jean led the group down the hallway, they heard frantic footsteps echoing from around the corner. Suddenly, Brad and Chloe came into view, sprinting down the corridor with a group of zombies hot on their heels. Brad gripped Chloe's hand tightly as they ran, his face pale with panic."Shit, it's Brad and Chloe," Lucas muttered, gripping his makeshift broom-handle weapon. "Looks like they're having a real bad day."Jean's grip on the fire axe tightened, but he kept moving forward. "We can't stop for them. Just keep going!"But then, in the middle of their escape, Chloe stumbled, twisting her ankle and collapsing onto the floor. She let out a pained yelp, reaching out toward Brad. "Brad! Help me!"Brad skidded to a halt, looking back at her with wide eyes, the fear obvious on his face. For a moment, he hesitated, torn between going back for her and saving himself. But the panic won out, and with a muttered curse, he turned and bolted, leaving Chloe behind."Are you fucking kidding me?" Chloe shouted, fury and disbelief twisting her face. "You asshole! Get back here!"But Brad didn't look back, disappearing down the hallway without another word.Jean and the others watched in shock, frozen for a split second by the scene unfolding in front of them. The zombies were closing in on Chloe, their vacant eyes and blood-stained mouths fixated on her as she struggled to stand, her face a mix of rage and terror.Just as the undead horde was about to reach her, Evan surprised everyone. Without hesitation, he sprinted forward, his face set in determination."Evan! What the hell are you doing?" Jean yelled, but Evan ignored him, zeroed in on Chloe.Reaching her just in time, he bent down, scooping her up and throwing her onto his back. Chloe let out a startled cry, clinging to him instinctively as he straightened up."Hang on tight!" he shouted, his voice tight with strain. With Chloe's weight slowing him down, he turned and started running back toward the group, his face red from the effort.Chloe, still stunned, clutched his shoulders, glancing over at the rest of them with wide eyes. "Who the hell... are you?"Evan didn't even miss a beat. "Just hang on! We're getting the hell out of here!"The rest of the group turned and ran, with Evan and Chloe now bringing up the rear. Jean led them through the maze-like hallways, his mind racing with every step as he searched for an exit.Lucas shot Evan a look as they ran, struggling to contain his laughter despite the situation. "Dude, you are such a simp.""Shut up!" Evan panted, pushing forward. "Just run!"Behind them, the zombies were relentless, their moans echoing through the hallway as they closed in. Jean tightened his grip on the fire axe, glancing back at the horde. They needed to reach the parking lot fast—every second counted. The group burst through the exit doors, stumbling into the parking lot as the daylight hit them. They looked around wildly, catching their breath and feeling a small surge of relief as they finally saw Ms. Heather's car just a few feet away."Alright, let's get in!" Jean shouted, motioning for everyone to follow. They all gathered around the car, but Ms. Heather hesitated, an embarrassed flush creeping across her cheeks. She looked down, fumbling nervously. "I... I forgot the keys. They're still in my classroom."A collective groan rippled through the group, their faces falling as the reality hit them."Are you serious?" Tyler asked, exasperation clear in his voice. "We ran all the way out here, and now we're just stranded?"Ms. Heather looked down, clearly feeling terrible. "I'm so sorry, everyone. I didn't... I wasn't thinking."Evan, catching his breath, glanced at the car and then looked back at the group, an idea sparking in his eyes. "Well, to be fair, her car's tiny as hell. It'd barely fit all of us anyway. Lucky for you all, I've got a plan."Jean raised an eyebrow, his grip still tight on the fire axe. "What's your plan, genius?"Evan grinned, his confidence returning. "I know how to hot-wire cars. But if we're talking about getting everyone out, we need something bigger than Ms. Heather's car."Lucas blinked, looking at him skeptically. "Wait, are you saying you're gonna hot-wire a bus or something?"Evan shrugged, smirking. "Pretty much. It's our best shot, unless you feel like hiking with zombies tailing us."Ms. Heather looked at him with a mix of concern and relief. "Are you sure you can... do that?"Evan chuckled, trying to look nonchalant. "Yeah, it'll just take a few minutes. But someone's gotta cover me while I get it going. If any of those freaks come our way..."Jean didn't hesitate. "We'll cover you. Just show us where."Evan nodded and led them across the parking lot to the school bus parked near the far end. The bright yellow paint was chipped, and the bus had clearly seen better days, but it was big, and more importantly, it would fit them all.Jean didn't wait for instructions. He used the axe to smash open the door, the glass shattering as he pried it open, then pushed his way in. Evan followed, setting Chloe down carefully on one of the seats before making his way to the driver's area, cracking his knuckles."Alright, give me a sec to work my magic," Evan muttered, glancing back at Jean. "Just keep an eye out."Jean nodded, then turned to Lucas, Tyler, and Akira. "Everyone, spread out. Keep watch. If any of those things get close, let me know, and we'll deal with them."Lucas looked around, clutching his broom handle. "Dude, I hope you know what you're doing, Evan. This better not take all day."Evan rolled his eyes, fiddling with the wires. "Trust me, I got this. Just give me a few minutes."The group fanned out around the bus, weapons ready as they kept an eye on the surrounding area. The eerie silence of the parking lot felt suffocating, broken only by the occasional distant moan drifting from the school building.Inside the bus, Chloe sat up, still looking pale but glaring at Evan as he worked. "I still don't know who the hell you are," she muttered, her voice hoarse, "but thanks... I guess."Evan didn't look up, grinning as he replied, "No worries, queen. Just hang tight, and I'll get us all out of here."Jean glanced back, catching sight of Chloe's expression as she looked at Evan—equal parts confusion and irritation. But there was no time to focus on that now. The tension in the air was thick as they waited, hoping Evan would pull through before anything else went wrong.Q: Would you have saved Chloe?
