Chapter 11 - [11] Bus ride

The bus rattled down the road, everyone tense and on edge, still processing the chaos they had barely escaped. The silence was broken by a scoff from Chloe, who sat across the aisle from Brad, arms crossed and glaring daggers at him."You're such a fking coward," she snapped, her voice dripping with venom. "You were ready to leave me for dead back there, you asshole."Brad rolled his eyes, leaning back in his seat and crossing his arms, his tone dismissive. "Oh, give me a break, Chloe. I'm not risking my life for some thot."Chloe's eyes widened, and her face turned red with fury. "Excuse me? I'm a thot? At least I'm not a guy with a micro dick who can barely last three minutes! So much for the big 'star quarterback.'" She punctuated her words with a snide smile, clearly relishing his discomfort. The others on the bus tried to ignore the argument, but it was hard to ignore the rising tension between them.Brad sat up, his face flushing with embarrassment and anger. "Oh, real mature, Chloe. Maybe if you weren't throwing yourself at every guy with a sports car, you'd have higher standards. Newsflash: I'm not your sugar daddy."Chloe let out a bitter laugh. "As if I'd waste my time on you if there was anyone better around. I must've been out of my mind even dating you."The bickering intensified, both of them lobbing insults back and forth, each one more cutting than the last.Jean, who had been sitting nearby, finally stood up, his face a mixture of annoyance and frustration. "Alright, enough! Both of you, shut up. We barely made it out of there alive, and now you two are fighting like this is some high school drama?"Chloe huffed, looking away, but Brad shot Jean a glare. "She started it, man."Jean rolled his eyes. "I don't care who started it. Just knock it off. We've got bigger problems right now—like staying alive. So unless you both want to step off this bus, I suggest you chill the hell out."The two of them fell silent, both looking away, though Chloe couldn't resist one last muttered insult under her breath. The bus continued down the road, bouncing slightly as Ms. Heather maneuvered around abandoned cars and debris. For a moment, the only sound was the rumbling of the engine and the occasional groan from the rusty old seats. But it didn't last long before Brittney, seated toward the front, let out an exasperated sigh."Um, Jean?" she said, leaning forward and tapping him on the shoulder. "Since you made me lose my phone back there, could I, like, borrow yours? I need to tell my followers what's going on, like, right now."Jean let out a weary sigh, rubbing his forehead. "Brittney, seriously? Do you think this is the time for a TikTok update?"She gave him a pout, flipping her pink-dyed hair over her shoulder. "Uh, yeah? People are gonna freak out if they don't hear from me. This is, like, the biggest news ever. Plus, it's kinda your fault I don't have my phone."With a groan, Jean dug his phone out of his pocket and handed it to her. "Fine. Just make it quick."She took it with a satisfied smile, unlocking the screen and swiping up, her fingers flying as she tried to access her socials. A few seconds later, her face twisted into confusion."Bruh, there's, like, no signal. No bars, nada," she said, waving the phone in the air as if that would somehow help. "Are you kidding me right now?"Jean shrugged, glancing out the window. "It's the apocalypse, Brittney. I don't think cell towers are exactly a priority right now."She let out a frustrated huff, staring at the phone as if willing it to work. "But how am I supposed to go live, or even let people know I'm okay? My followers are gonna think I'm dead or something. That's so not chill."Ethan, sitting a few seats back, rolled his eyes. "Yeah, 'cause that's the worst thing that could happen right now, right?"Before Brittney could retort, Lucas pointed out the window. "Hey, is it just me, or is everything... dark?"They all turned to look, noticing for the first time that the street lights, storefronts, and even the traffic lights were all off. The familiar buzz of electricity was gone, leaving the streets eerily silent."Power's out," Ms. Heather muttered, keeping her eyes on the road as she navigated through the intersections. "Looks like it's everywhere, too.""Great," Jean sighed, sinking back into his seat. "No signal, no power... We're really on our own now."Brittney lowered the phone, her usual bright demeanor dampened as she stared out at the darkened streets. "So... like, are we really in some kind of zombie apocalypse right now? This can't be real. This is like... Walking Dead level crazy."Ethan gave her a serious look. "It's real, alright. And if we don't figure something out soon, we're just gonna be another group of people who didn't make it."Brittney looked away, her expression uncharacteristically somber. Even she couldn't meme her way out of this reality. The silence that followed was thick, each of them slowly coming to grips with the grim reality they now faced.Q: What you ever been caught in the middle of a couples argument?
