The next morning, I stood there at the Civil Affairs Bureau, waiting for Han Sheng, my heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and relief. After some time, he finally showed up, looking as if he was dreading what was about to happen. Without a single word exchanged between us, I walked straight into the building, my heels clicking sharply against the floor. Han Sheng followed behind.
We went through the divorce procedures in silence, the papers signed, the finality of it all sinking in. It felt like a weight had been lifted from my chest, like I could finally breathe freely again after being suffocated by this dreadful marriage for so long.
I couldn't even bear to glance at him, not a single look, not even when he tried to speak to me. Before he could get a word out, I turned on my heels, walking briskly to my car, feeling the rush of freedom filling my lungs.
As I sat behind the wheel and drove, I couldn't help but smile to myself. The air felt lighter, the wind touched my face softly, and I thought, "Su Yan! Finally, I got you out of this hell."
The first thing I did after the divorce was call Fu Qian. I told him everything, pouring my heart out. As we talked, a truck suddenly sped towards me, crashing into mine with full force. The impact left me severely injured, bleeding and broken.
As I tried to stay conscious, the pain was overwhelming. I could barely hear Fu Qian's frantic voice calling my name through the phone, but it felt distant as if coming from another world. My vision blurred, and everything around me seemed to spin. The smell of petrol grew stronger, and I could feel the warmth of my blood seeping from my wounds. I tried to move, but my body refused to respond. All I could do was listen to Fu Qian, his voice growing more frantic as I felt myself drifting into darkness.
A fire erupted from the remains, causing a massive explosion that shook the area. The flames roared, sending a burst of heat and smoke into the air, consuming everything in its path.
Soon, Han Sheng heard about the accident and rushed to the scene, the area was flooded with ambulance and police, the air thick with panic and urgency. When he saw the mangled car, he froze in terror. His eyes filled with tears, the weight of losing me crushing him, he tried to get closer, but they held him back. He dropped to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably.
His assistant approached, his voice heavy with sorrow. "We can't find the body. She... she may have been burned beyond recognition," he said, his words hanging in the air.
"Stop!" Han Sheng cried out, shaking his head in disbelief. "She won't be gone. She is strong. She's alive. I know she is," he whispered, his voice trembling as he prayed desperately, hoping for a miracle.
At my memorial ceremony, Han Sheng was devastated, his heart broken, tears streaming down his face. He couldn't hold it together as he mourned me. Suddenly, Fu Qian stormed in, full of anger. He grabbed Han Sheng by the shirt, his voice boiling with rage. "It's all because of you! She died because of you! If you'd given her the divorce before this, she wouldn't have ended up like this!" Fu Qian shouted, his emotions overwhelming him.
Han Sheng, devastated, only cried in response, unable to defend himself. Fu Qian, still trembling with fury, pulled away and stormed off, the pain and guilt too much to bear.
Then, Han Sheng's mother and sister arrived. They stood by him, trying to comfort him, but their words only hurt. "You should forget her. She's dead now. It's time to move on. You should marry Su Ming," they suggested, as if it were that simple.
Han Sheng turned to them, his voice filled with disbelief and pain. "Mom, she's my wife! She's gone, and you're telling me to move on like that? Don't tell me you treated her like this for three years when I wasn't home!" His words were sharp, full of pain.
As his mother and sister looked on, he collapsed, his voice cracking as he began to sob. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he repeated over and over. "I don't know how you've been through this much... I'm so sorry. Please, come back... please come back alive," he cried, his heart breaking in a way he never thought possible.
