Chapter 20 - The Court’s Gambit

The morning sun bathed the castle in golden light, but Amelia felt the weight of the council meeting looming over her like a storm cloud. Clad in an elegant yet understated gown, she strode into the council chamber with Cedric and Lilith flanking her. Whispers filled the room as lords and ladies turned their sharp eyes toward her.

Gregory stood at the head of the chamber, his smirk as venomous as ever. Marianne was beside him, her cold beauty a stark contrast to her scheming nature.

"The council is gathered," Gregory began, his voice carrying an air of false authority. "Today, we address the growing unrest caused by Lady Seraphina's actions—or rather, inactions."

Amelia raised an eyebrow, her expression calm despite the fire burning in her chest. "If we are discussing unrest, perhaps we should begin with the secret meetings held in the east wing."

The room fell silent, save for the faint rustling of papers. Gregory's composure faltered, but he quickly recovered. "Accusations without proof mean nothing, my lady."

Amelia gestured to Cedric, who stepped forward and presented the stolen documents. Gasps rippled through the chamber as the lords and ladies scanned the damning evidence.

"This," Cedric said, his voice steady and firm, "is proof of Gregory's conspiracy to overthrow the king. Troop movements, alliances, and plans to incite rebellion—all signed by Gregory himself."

Gregory's face darkened. "This is a fabrication!" he snapped. "A desperate attempt by Seraphina to divert attention from her own failings."

A Hidden Betrayal

Just as Amelia prepared to respond, Marianne stepped forward. "Perhaps Lady Seraphina is not as innocent as she claims," she said, her voice dripping with feigned concern.

Amelia's brow furrowed. "What are you insinuating, Marianne?"

Marianne produced a small vial from her sleeve—the same vial Gregory had shown Amelia in the gardens. "This was discovered in Lady Seraphina's chambers early this morning. A potent poison, no doubt intended for someone in this very room."

Amelia's heart sank. She turned to Lilith, whose face mirrored her shock. "That's impossible," Amelia said, her voice firm. "I would never—"

"Of course you wouldn't," Gregory interjected, his tone mockingly sympathetic. "But the evidence speaks for itself. Perhaps we should question the loyalty of those closest to you."

All eyes turned to Lilith. The young maid's hands trembled as guards moved to seize her.

"No!" Amelia shouted, stepping between Lilith and the guards. "Lilith is loyal. This is clearly a setup."

The Male Lead Steps In

Before Gregory could press the attack, Cedric stepped forward, his voice like thunder. "This is an insult to the court's intelligence. Lady Seraphina has no need for such underhanded tactics. Gregory, however, has everything to gain by framing her."

The room buzzed with whispers, and the tension escalated. Amelia felt a wave of gratitude toward Cedric, but she knew this moment could spiral out of control.

"Enough," she said, her voice commanding. "If Gregory truly believes I am guilty, let us summon the king. Only he can decide the truth of these accusations."

Gregory hesitated, his confidence faltering. "Very well," he said, masking his unease. "Let the king decide."

The King's Judgment

The king arrived with a regal air, his piercing gaze sweeping the room. He listened to both sides, his expression unreadable. When the documents were presented, his jaw tightened.

"This is damning evidence," the king said, his voice heavy. "Gregory, what do you have to say for yourself?"

Gregory stammered, but before he could respond, a commotion erupted outside the chamber. A servant burst in, breathless. "My liege, the western garrison has reported an uprising. The rebels are moving!"

Amelia's blood ran cold. Gregory's plan was already in motion.

Romance in the Midst of Chaos

As the court descended into chaos, Cedric pulled Amelia aside. "This is far from over," he said, his voice low. "We need to stop this rebellion before it spreads."

Amelia met his gaze, her heart pounding. "And how do you propose we do that?"

"We'll expose Gregory completely," Cedric replied. "But it'll be dangerous. I need you to trust me."

Amelia hesitated, the weight of her position pressing down on her. "I do trust you, Cedric. More than anyone."

He stepped closer, his hand brushing hers. "Then let's end this. Together."

The Plot Thickens

As the meeting dissolved into panic, Amelia spotted Marianne slipping out of the chamber. Her instincts flared, and she nodded to Lilith.

"Follow her," Amelia whispered.

Lilith nodded, disappearing into the shadows.

Amelia turned back to Cedric, her resolve hardening. "If Gregory wants war, he'll get one. But on my terms."

Cedric nodded, his eyes glinting with determination. "We'll outmaneuver them at every turn. And when this is over, the court will see who the true villain is."

Amelia allowed herself a small smile. "And perhaps," she said, her voice softening, "they'll see who the true heroes are."
