**Arc 5: Chapter 20 - Echoes of Resolve**
The forest canopy loomed overhead, its dense foliage blocking out most of the moonlight. The group moved in silence, their breaths heavy, each step weighed down by exhaustion. The fresh scars on their bodies were a grim reminder of the battle they'd just survived.
"Are we clear?" Hana whispered, her voice barely audible.
Jae-min paused, glancing over his shoulder. His system interface displayed no immediate threats, but that didn't mean they were safe. The hunters had been brutal, and Nexus wasn't the type to give up easily.
"For now," he replied, his tone cautious. "But we're not out of the woods yet—literally or figuratively."
Elise chuckled weakly, leaning against a tree for support. "You're really sticking to the hero speeches, huh?"
Jae-min shot her a dry look but didn't respond. His focus remained on the path ahead.
Min-jun approached with Soo-ah, his face pale. "She's not doing well," he murmured.
Soo-ah's complexion was ashen, her breathing shallow. The stress of the journey had taken its toll on her, and the gash on her arm was bleeding through the makeshift bandage.
"Let me see." Hana knelt beside her, unrolling a small med-kit she'd scavenged earlier. Her hands moved deftly, cleaning and dressing the wound. "She'll be okay, but she needs rest—and proper care soon."
"Rest isn't an option," Jae-min said grimly. "We need to reach the safe house before dawn. Nexus will send reinforcements once they realize the hunters failed."
Luna emerged from the shadows, her bow slung across her back. "The path ahead is clear for now, but there's a patrol route about a mile to the east. We'll have to veer west to avoid it."
"West?" Elise frowned. "That'll add at least an hour to our journey."
"Better an hour than walking into an ambush," Jae-min said firmly.
The group exchanged tired glances but nodded in agreement.
---
The trek westward was grueling. Every rustle of leaves and crack of branches set their nerves on edge, the tension in the air palpable. As the horizon began to lighten with the faintest hint of dawn, they finally reached the safe house.
It was a small, unassuming cabin tucked away in a clearing, surrounded by dense trees. Its weathered exterior hinted at years of disuse, but to Jae-min and his team, it was a sanctuary.
"This is it?" Elise asked skeptically, eyeing the structure.
"It's secure," Jae-min said. "That's all that matters."
Luna stepped forward, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. "I'll do a perimeter check. Make sure it hasn't been compromised."
"Take Elise with you," Jae-min said. "Two pairs of eyes are better than one."
The two women nodded and disappeared into the trees.
Inside the cabin, Min-jun and Hana helped Soo-ah onto a makeshift bed. Hana immediately began preparing a more thorough treatment for her injuries, her expression focused.
Jae-min moved to the window, keeping watch as the sky grew brighter. His mind raced with thoughts of what lay ahead. They'd made it this far, but the mission was far from over.
"You're thinking too loudly," Hana said softly, not looking up from her work.
Jae-min glanced at her, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Sorry. Just trying to figure out our next move."
She looked up then, her gaze steady. "We'll figure it out together. You don't have to carry all of this alone, Jae-min."
The weight of her words settled on him, and for a moment, he allowed himself to relax.
---
Luna and Elise returned shortly after, confirming the area was clear. The group gathered around a small table, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of a lantern.
"Here's the situation," Jae-min began, his voice steady despite the exhaustion etched into his features. "We've bought ourselves some time, but Nexus won't stop. They'll be hunting us harder than ever."
"What's the plan?" Min-jun asked, his voice tinged with nervous energy.
Jae-min's eyes flickered to Soo-ah, who was now resting peacefully. "First, we get her back on her feet. Then we move to the next rendezvous point. We need to regroup with the others and gather intel on Nexus's next move."
"And if they find us before we're ready?" Luna asked, her tone sharp.
"Then we fight," Jae-min said simply.
A heavy silence fell over the group, each member processing the gravity of their situation.
Finally, Elise broke the tension with a wry smile. "Well, at least it won't be boring."
Hana rolled her eyes, but the faintest smile touched her lips.
Jae-min leaned back, his gaze fixed on the lantern's flame. They were battered and broken, but they were alive. And as long as they were alive, they had a chance to fight back.
