Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE

"We're getting a divorce." Her mum said. Violet just sat there not knowing what to say or do.

She had seen it coming for a while now. It was right after their vacation to Hawaii things went wrong. Her parents never argued, or at least they never showed it when they were having issues. But, it was different this time. They argued all the time, sometimes it even led to breaking of the dishes and all other objects that were breakable in the house.

"We know this is going to be hard on you, but it was a decision I and your father made for your sake." Her mother said.

"More like for yourselves." she replied. Her mother tried to reach for her hand but she pulled away quickly.

"Honey…" her dad was saying but she cut him short.

"Was that why you missed my birthday?" she asked. Her father couldn't even look her in the eye as he bowed his head in shame. Tears welled up in her eyes.

"You missed my birthday because you were busy fucking your assistant." tears rolled down her cheek as she spoke. Her father crossed the room and tried moving closer to her.

"Stay the fuck away from me dad!" She yelled and he stopped right in his tracks.

"Violet, please just listen to me." her father pleaded to her.

"Mum, can you please tell him that I do not want to speak to him." Violet said facing her mother

"and don't bother fighting about my custody, I'd rather stay with mum, so you can focus on your new love story." Violet said and walked to her room.

Her dad went after her and grabbed her arm.

"Violet, please just listen to me. I just need five minutes to explain myself to you" her dad said in a pleading manner.

"So you can tell more lies?" she asked.

"No, I…" he was saying.

"i gave you so many opportunities to tell me the truth, dad. But you kept lying to my face. I found out you were cheating on mum a long time ago, I hoped and prayed you'd put an end to it. But you didn't. i was ashamed of myself for trusting you this much dad." She said crying .

"Vee…I….I..." he stammered.

"Please, do not speak to me. You have no right to." she said to him sternly and walked out.

Violet headed to her room and shut the door angrily. She laid on her bed and tears streamed down her cheek.

She cried till she fell asleep.

"Your own daughter knows the kind of person you are. You're a monster!" Alice yelled.

The noise coming from the living room woke Violet up and she rushed downstairs. She found two more people in the living room. Her grandmother and aunt.

"Aunt Alice, Nana, what are you doing here?" Violet asked in surprise.

Aunt Alice was her father's immediate younger sister and it wasn't surprising that she knew about his affair. They worked in the same company. Their father's company. Her father became the CEO after her grandfather died. Alice was the head of finance department. Her mother had gone to the company to confront her father's assistant about their affair and it wasn't a quiet confrontation.

"Vee… you're up." her mother said and walked up to her but she was trying to hide her tears from her daughter.

Everyone seemed quiet, something seemed odd. She knew about the affair and the divorce already. So there was no need to be quiet.

"Is something wrong? Everyone seems quiet." She said and looked at their faces. Her mother was crying, but was trying to hide it. Something felt amiss.

"Vee, why don't you go back upstairs. This is a conversation for the adults." her Nana said.

She nodded and went back upstairs opened the door to her room and shut it to pretend like she went in.

She heard them speaking in hushed tones but couldn't hear what they were talking about. So she moved closer to the fleet of stairs and walked down three stairs, she knew they couldn't see her but she could hear them.

"How could you get her pregnant Greg?" Her Nana asked.

She stood on a spot shocked. He cheated and got her pregnant. Her heart broke even more.

She slowly walked downstairs and stood in the living room.

"Vee…" her mother said, she was the first to notice her presence.

"Dad,is this true?" she asked her voice shaking.

"Honey…" her aunt said.

"Dad I asked you a question." she said cutting her aunt her short. The tears she had held in were threatening to pour out. His silence had answered it all. She looked at him with so much pain in her eyes. His eyes didn't show any guilt. It was as if he didn't care, about her or his 20 years marriage which was on the verge of destruction. He loved her. She could see it in his eyes.

"You love her." she said and looked into his eyes. His eyes were the only thing that held the truth. He had taught her that ' Only one's eyes could portray one's true emotions.'

"Your eyes say it all. You taught me to look into a person's eye when I ask a question. You love her dad." she said with tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Vee, I'm sorry, I really am" her father said.

She nodded and ran out of the house.

"Violet!Violet!!Violet!!!" her Nana screamed after her as she ran out.

She didn't stop running or turn back. So many thoughts filled her had as she kept running. What had gone wrong in her parent's marriage. They loved each other. Her mother never failed to show how much she loved her husband. She'd tell stories of how they met, she had items from their first date and all other moments they spent together over the last 25 years. If people loved each other weren't they supposed to be together forever. Her father had hurt her. The last time she saw her mother in so much pain was when she lost her own mother, and it didn't even hurt as much because her best friend who also happened to be her lovely husband was there to console her, and this time it was he who had caused her pain. She kept recalling all the moments her mum had made up excuses for him. Birthdays, anniversary and important family events. She kept running until she got to her best friend's. She bent down to catch her breath, before she knocked. The door was opened almost immediately by her best friend's mum.

"Good evening, Mrs Wilson." She greeted her.

"Vee, come on in honey." she said and stepped aside so Vee could come in.

"Is everything okay? You don't look so good." Mrs Wilson said as soon as she closed the door.

Violet broke into tears immediately.

"Vee,what happened?" She said and pulled her in for a hug.

"Vee, what are yo...." Aria stopped mid sentence after seeing her mom hold Violet.

She cried for a while and when she stopped, she called her mum and told her she wasn't coming home.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Aria asked her after a while.

"My parents are getting divorced. My dad was sleeping with his assistant and my mom found out. Then found out his assistant is pregnant." she said.

They looked at Vee in utter dismay.

"i…I.." Aria was stammering.

"it's okay if you don't what to say, I was shocked too. I knew about his affair a long time, but I couldn't bring myself to tell anyone. It was going to be embarrassing if I told anyone my dad was a cheat, so I kept it to myself."

That explained why she had been distant for awhile. Aria thought to herself.

"I'm sorry honey." Aria's mother said. She didn't know how to console the poor child.

Vee knew her entire life was about to change. She just didn't know if it was going to be for the better or for the worse.

No matter how much things changed, she was going to embrace it.
