Chapter 15 - Ch-15: The terrifying void creature (3)

The final creature emerged as the moon hung low over the battlefield, its pale light casting eerie shadows on the bloodied ground. This one was unlike the others—taller, leaner, and cloaked in a swirling aura of darkness and chaos. Its body shimmered like liquid obsidian, and jagged, ever-shifting spikes jutted from its limbs. The void radiated from its very being, distorting reality around it. It was the Eclipse Reaper, a creature forged to destroy with precision and malice.

The Church's forces, now depleted and battle-worn, stood in grim defiance. The last creature had taken nearly all their strength to defeat, and this one's mere presence sent waves of despair through the ranks. But they couldn't back down. The divine cause demanded their utmost sacrifice.

The Eclipse Reaper didn't waste time. With a speed that defied its massive frame, it lunged into the fray, a single swing of its jagged claws slicing through the air and producing a sonic boom. The shockwave shattered armor, broke bones, and sent soldiers flying like leaves in a storm. Trees uprooted and the ground splintered, creating a web of deep cracks radiating out from its point of impact.

Grand Bishop Elara, the Church's most powerful caster, raised her staff, invoking a protective barrier. "Hold steady! Let the Light guide us!" she shouted, her voice carrying a divine resonance that steadied the troops.

The Reaper's second strike came as a whirlwind of spinning blades formed from its shadowy aura, cutting through the air like a storm of razors. Elara's barrier held, but only barely. The ground beneath it erupted in a geyser of dirt and rock, and the impact sent cracks spidering across the protective dome.

Paladin Commander Gregor, the last of the Church's high-ranking warriors, charged toward the creature. His armor glowed with divine runes, and he wielded the Lance of Purity, a holy relic designed to pierce even the toughest of darkness. With a battle cry, he leaped into the air, aiming directly for the creature's chest.

The Eclipse Reaper moved faster than thought, its claw meeting the Lance in mid-air. The impact created a blinding explosion, the force of which sent shockwaves rippling through the battlefield. Soldiers were knocked off their feet, and the earth below them trembled as if it would split apart.

Gregor gritted his teeth, pushing against the creature's strength. "For the Light, I will not yield!" he roared, channeling divine energy into the Lance. The weapon glowed brighter, its light cutting through the shadows surrounding the Reaper.

The creature responded with a guttural roar that shook the heavens, and its aura flared violently. Tendrils of darkness erupted from its body, slamming into Gregor and throwing him across the battlefield. He crashed into a boulder, the impact shattering the rock and leaving him bloodied but alive.

Elara seized the moment. She raised her staff high, chanting an incantation that called upon the full power of the Light. Beams of pure radiance shot down from the heavens, striking the creature and burning away its shadowy armor. The Reaper screeched in agony, its obsidian form cracking under the assault.

But it wasn't enough. The creature retaliated by summoning a storm of darkness, an impenetrable sphere of shadow that enveloped the battlefield. Inside the sphere, visibility dropped to nothing, and the sounds of battle became a cacophony of screams and clashing weapons.

Elara's voice cut through the chaos. "Stay together! Do not let the darkness divide you!"

The soldiers huddled close, their weapons glowing faintly with divine light. Gregor stumbled to his feet, his Lance now dim, its power nearly depleted. He gritted his teeth, his resolve unbroken.

"I'll buy you time," he said to Elara. "Prepare the final strike."

Gregor charged into the shadow storm, his armor glowing like a beacon in the void. He slashed and stabbed at the tendrils of darkness that lashed out at him, each strike accompanied by bursts of divine energy. The Reaper loomed ahead, its form barely visible through the swirling chaos.

With a roar, Gregor lunged, driving the Lance into the creature's side. The Reaper howled, its body convulsing as cracks of light spread from the wound. But it wasn't enough to kill it. The creature retaliated with a backhanded swipe that sent Gregor flying once again, his Lance clattering to the ground.

Elara saw her chance. Summoning every ounce of her power, she began casting the Church's most forbidden spell: Judgment of the Celestial Flame. The sky above the battlefield split open, revealing a vortex of burning light. A massive pillar of fire descended, aimed directly at the Reaper.

The creature raised its claws, trying to deflect the attack, but the fire consumed it, burning away its shadowy form. The battlefield erupted in a blinding explosion, the shockwave flattening everything for miles. Trees were uprooted, the ground split into chasms, and the remaining soldiers were thrown to the ground.

When the light faded, the Eclipse Reaper was gone. All that remained was a smoking crater and the broken forms of the Church's survivors. Gregor lay unconscious, his armor cracked and his body battered. Elara dropped to her knees, her staff shattered and her strength spent.

In the Void, Allen watched with a smirk. "Impressive," he mused. "They actually managed to kill all three. But at what cost?" He leaned back, his laughter echoing through the darkness. "Let's give them this hollow victory. They'll need it for what's coming next."
