Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Awakening the Exalted

Chapter: Awakening the Exalted

The Grand Cathedral of the Church, once a place of solace and unwavering faith, now thrummed with an oppressive tension. Its vast hallways echoed the hurried footsteps of clerics and knights, their faces lined with exhaustion and defeat. The Council Chamber, a sanctified space reserved for the highest-ranking members, had become a war room, where plans were discussed and discarded in desperation.

But beneath the cathedral, far from the din of panic, lay the Sanctum of Eternity—a place known only to a select few. It was here that the Church's ultimate weapon, the Exalted, awaited his time. The chamber was circular and grand, its walls carved with ancient symbols that glowed faintly, bathing the room in an ethereal light. At the center, encased in crystalline stasis, stood Ardon, the Exalted—silent, immovable, but brimming with dormant power.

The sanctum's air was thick with divine energy, making even the most hardened clerics tremble. Grand Archbishop Severus, a man who had lived through countless battles, stood at the edge of the innermost circle, his face stern. Around him were the Church's senior members: warriors, strategists, and saints who had borne witness to the devastation wrought by Allen's Void creatures.

Severus's voice broke the silence, commanding but tinged with sorrow. "We stand at a precipice. The Void does not relent, and our walls have fallen. Thousands of our brothers and sisters lie dead, and our forts are rubble. Yet, in the face of this despair, we cannot falter. We have one last hope: the awakening of the Exalted."

The council murmured, some nodding in agreement while others exchanged anxious glances. One of the knights, Sir Dalen, stepped forward, his voice uncertain. "Grand Archbishop, the Exalted's power is immense, but the gods themselves sealed it for a reason. Are we certain this is the path we must take?"

A saint, her robes shimmering faintly with holy energy, replied sharply. "And what alternative do we have? The Void spreads like a plague. If we do nothing, there will be nothing left to protect."

The Ritual of Awakening

Severus raised his hand, silencing the debate. "Enough. The decision has been made. Prepare the Sanctum. Begin the Ritual of Awakening."

The clerics moved quickly, their chants rising in unison as they formed a circle around Ardon's stasis. Runes etched into the floor ignited, glowing brighter with every verse. The air grew heavy, vibrating with the resonance of ancient incantations.

The cocoon around Ardon began to crack, each fissure releasing bursts of radiant light. The ground trembled as the divine energy within him stirred, sending shockwaves through the room. The clerics faltered under the strain, but they continued their chants, their voices merging into a single, harmonious melody.

As the cocoon shattered, Ardon stepped forward, his form radiant and imposing. His armor gleamed like molten gold, intricate with patterns of light that seemed to pulse like a heartbeat. His eyes glowed with an intense, otherworldly brilliance. In his hand, he held the Blade of Aeons, a weapon said to have been forged by the gods themselves.

His voice was calm yet filled the chamber with authority. "I am awake. Speak, mortals. What is the task for which I have been summoned?"

The Divine Council

Severus stepped forward, bowing deeply. "Exalted, the Void has unleashed horrors upon our world. Creatures of unnatural origin have devastated our lands, and the Shadow Village grows stronger with every passing day. We have fought and sacrificed, but our strength is not enough. We seek your guidance and your power."

Ardon regarded him with an inscrutable expression. "The Void… an aberration that defies the balance of creation. The gods have warned me of its return. Tell me, what is its current form?"

One of the clerics stepped forward hesitantly. "The Void manifests as a creeping corruption. Forests twist into grotesque shapes, rivers turn to black sludge, and even the air carries its taint. Its master, Allen, uses this energy to create creatures of immense power. We have defeated three of these beasts, but not without great loss."

Ardon nodded, his expression unchanging. "The Void's master seeks chaos, not conquest. Such power cannot be allowed to fester. But my awakening alone will not end this. The gods have sealed much of my strength. To face the Void fully, I must attune to the Holy Nexus."

Severus's face darkened. "The Holy Nexus lies deep within enemy territory. The Void has spread its corruption there as well. Reaching it will be perilous."

Ardon's gaze hardened. "Perilous or not, it must be done. The gods have entrusted me with this power, but I must wield it wisely. Assemble your forces. We march at dawn."

Meanwhile: Allen's Growing Influence

Far from the Church's sanctum, Allen stood in the heart of the Shadow Village. His system interface flickered before him, displaying his progress. His Void energy had reached 0.19%, a small number but one that carried immense potential.

He smirked as he felt the ripple of divine energy from the Church. "So, they awaken their champion. How quaint. Let them try."

Allen turned to his lieutenants, shadowy figures who knelt before him. "Deploy our scouts near the Nexus. Ensure it is drenched in Void energy. If they wish to play saviors, let them wade through the darkness first."

One of his lieutenants, a serpentine creature with shifting scales, hissed. "And if they reach the Nexus, my lord?"

Allen's smirk widened. "Then we test their champion. Let them see that the Void is not so easily undone."

A Journey into Darkness

The Church's forces, led by Ardon, set out for the Holy Nexus. The journey was fraught with peril. The land was a scarred wasteland, where trees oozed black ichor, and the ground cracked underfoot. Void beasts lurked in the shadows, their eyes glowing with malevolent light.

Ardon led the charge, his Blade of Aeons cutting through the creatures with divine precision. Every swing sent arcs of light through the darkness, shattering the beasts into nothingness. Yet the closer they got to the Nexus, the stronger the Void's resistance became.

When they finally reached the Nexus, they found it surrounded by a swirling barrier of Void energy. Ardon stepped forward, his sword glowing brighter than ever. With a single, powerful slash, he tore through the barrier, the force of the strike sending shockwaves through the air.

But as the barrier fell, a new threat emerged—a massive Void construct, larger and more powerful than anything they had faced before. Its body was a shifting mass of darkness, its form constantly changing.

Ardon raised his sword, his voice unwavering. "The Void's corruption ends here."
