My booted feet touched the wooden bridge, my arms cradling its precious bundle.
My heart raged from behind its skeletal cage, and I could not look away from the child in my arms, his brown eyes peeking back at me from beneath fringing hair.
When I saw him fall, I had moved before I could think about it. And now I still couldn't think.
