Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Danger Approaches, A New Teammate Joins

In the darkness, a towering figure, over two meters tall and clad in specially designed black leather armor, strode forward with an intimidating presence. Each massive hand gripped a spinning machine gun, the barrels glinting coldly under the faint light. The heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed ominously as the figure steadily approached the school.

Second Floor, Inside the School

Alice's team had fallen into an ambush set by zombies. They were struggling to fight their way out while attempting to move to the first floor and rendezvous with Wang Ye's group. However, the school was swarming with an overwhelming number of undead. The noise from their gunfire had attracted even more zombies from the surrounding streets, cutting off the staircase and trapping them in a classroom.

Time slipped away as the team's ammunition dwindled rapidly. The number of zombies, however, showed no signs of decreasing. Instead, the horde seemed to grow with every passing moment.

"This isn't working—we're running out of ammo!" Alice exclaimed, quickly checking her remaining rounds.

"The Commander must've heard the gunfire and is on his way. Let's focus our fire and push toward the staircase!"

Meanwhile, on the First Floor

"It looks like they're in serious trouble. The zombies in this area have all been drawn into the school, converging on their location. We need to move quickly!" Wang Ye said, switching his assault rifle to burst mode and efficiently clearing the zombies in his path.

His three teammates grasped the urgency of the situation. If they didn't act fast, the group upstairs could be overwhelmed. On top of that, the threat of lurking Lickers loomed over them like a shadow.

As Wang Ye led his team toward the staircase, the distant sound of gunfire from another part of the building caught his attention.

"If Alice's team is still upstairs and shooting, then someone else must be over there," Wang Ye surmised. "You three stay here and work on clearing the zombies blocking the stairs. I'll go check it out."

Precision shots from Wang Ye's rifle cut through the horde with clinical efficiency as he made his way toward the distant gunfire. He suspected Umbrella operatives—perhaps sent by Dr. Charles to search for Angela—might be in the area.

"We'll clear the stairway as much as we can before you return!" Rain shouted, pulling out her energy pistol. JD and Kaplan nodded in agreement, knowing they'd need every advantage to hold the line without Wang Ye's cover fire.

"Good. Stay safe!" Wang Ye replied before picking up his pace. His rifle barked as he cut down zombies with brutal precision, carving out a two-meter radius of empty space around himself.

Within moments, Wang Ye vanished from view, leaving only the echo of gunfire to reassure his team of his progress.

Elsewhere in the School

"Damn it, where are all these monsters coming from?" Elvis muttered, firing repeatedly at the advancing horde. Barricaded behind a makeshift defensive circle of overturned tables, he tried to maintain his composure.

Suddenly, a burst of rapid gunfire tore through the horde, creating an opening. A black-clad figure charged forward, clearing a path through the zombies.

"This area's overrun! Come with me!" the figure—Wang Ye—commanded.

Realizing he had no other choice, Elvis abandoned his barricade and followed.

"Are you here for the rescue mission? I got a call from Dr. Charles earlier. I'm here to find his daughter. Can you help me?"

"I'm not with Umbrella," Wang Ye replied curtly. "But we have the same goal."

After clearing the nearby zombies, Wang Ye noticed a wound on Elvis's shoulder.

"What happened to your shoulder?"

"My teammate turned into a zombie while I was carrying him. He bit me," Elvis admitted nervously.

"How long ago?"

"About two hours."

"Good. You're still salvageable."

Without hesitation, Wang Ye pulled out a syringe filled with green serum.

"This is an antidote for the infection. Consider yourself lucky; tonight, you're the second person blessed by Lady Luck."

Though hesitant, Elvis rolled up his sleeve and allowed Wang Ye to inject him. Trusting the man's strength and presence, Elvis felt there was no deception at play.

Moments later, clarity returned to his mind, and strength flowed back into his body.

"Thank you! This must be incredibly valuable!"

"Then don't waste it," Wang Ye replied, shooting him a sharp glance. "From now on, your life is mine."

Reuniting with the Group

After clearing the stairwell, Wang Ye regrouped with Rain's team. Leading them to the second floor, they pushed toward the fading gunfire.

"They're in that classroom ahead!" Wang Ye called out, his voice cutting through the chaos. "You've noticed it too, right? Something big is following us. We need to hurry!"

With a deafening blast, Wang Ye used a high-explosive grenade to obliterate the zombies blocking the classroom door. Charging in, his team unleashed a storm of gunfire, swiftly eliminating all remaining threats.

"Commander, you're finally here!" Alice exclaimed, relief evident on her face. But her expression quickly darkened, turning serious.

"I've felt something extremely dangerous approaching us. And… do you hear that?"

A heavy, rhythmic thudding echoed through the corridors, growing louder with each passing second.

Suddenly, the eerie creak of a cabinet opening behind them broke the tense silence.
