Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Bennett's Luck Strikes Again

Mondstadt was buzzing with excitement. Word of Pokémon was spreading like wildfire, and more citizens were visiting Hiroshi's shop each day. Despite the occasional rainstorms, the air was filled with an electric sense of anticipation. The people of Mondstadt were slowly becoming accustomed to seeing these magical creatures roaming the streets, partnered with knights and citizens alike.

Bennett, the ever-enthusiastic adventurer, was among the many people in Mondstadt who had been captivated by the tales of Pokémon. However, he had been hesitant about getting a partner. His reputation for bad luck had made him think twice—what if his misfortune affected his partner too? But the allure of having his own Pokémon, a companion to accompany him on his many adventures, was too strong to resist.

After much deliberation, Bennett finally decided that today would be the day he visited Hiroshi's shop. He walked up to the quaint storefront, his heart pounding with excitement and a hint of nervousness. Hiroshi greeted him warmly, his smile welcoming.

"Ah, Bennett! I've been expecting you," Hiroshi said, recognizing the young adventurer immediately. "You've come to find a partner, haven't you?"

Bennett nodded, trying to muster his usual confident grin. "Yeah, I've heard a lot about Pokémon. I figured it's finally time to get one for myself. But, uh, I've got to warn you… I'm kinda known for my bad luck."

Hiroshi waved a hand dismissively, his eyes kind. "Don't worry about that. Pokémon don't judge based on luck. They care about your spirit and your heart, and from what I've heard, you've got plenty of both." He reached for a Poké Ball on the shelf and handed it to Bennett. "This one is just right for you. Go ahead, give it a try."

Bennett took the Poké Ball, his hands trembling slightly. He pressed the button, and in a flash of light, a small, orange creature appeared. It had a flame flickering at the tip of its tail and big, curious eyes—a Charmander.

Bennett's eyes widened, and his smile grew. "Whoa! A Charmander! It's… awesome!"

Charmander looked up at Bennett, its eyes shining with curiosity. It let out a cheerful cry, and Bennett's heart swelled with warmth. Hiroshi watched the interaction, a pleased smile on his face.

"Charmander's a Fire-type, just like the passion you have for adventuring," Hiroshi said. "I think you two will make a great team."

Bennett knelt down, holding out a hand to Charmander. The Pokémon sniffed his hand before nuzzling against it, and Bennett laughed, his worries about his bad luck momentarily forgotten. "Hey there, Charmander. I'm Bennett. Looks like we're partners now!"

Hiroshi nodded, handing Bennett a Pokédex and a small pouch containing six Poké Balls. "Here's your Pokédex, similar to a smartphone. It will help you learn more about Pokémon, their abilities, and their moves. Also, here are some Poké Balls and a starter pack of Pokémon food. Take good care of Charmander, and it will take care of you."

Bennett took the items gratefully, feeling a sense of responsibility settle on his shoulders. "Thanks, Hiroshi. I'll make sure to take good care of Charmander."

Later in the day, Bennett and Charmander were wandering through the Whispering Woods, Bennett eager to show his new partner some of the places he often explored. The two of them were having a great time—Charmander was fascinated by the different plants, sniffing everything it came across, and Bennett couldn't help but feel proud of his new companion.

"This is one of my favorite spots, Charmander," Bennett said, pointing to a clearing surrounded by tall, swaying trees. "The wind here feels amazing, and sometimes you can see all kinds of animals passing through. Maybe someday we'll even see some really rare stuff…"

Just as he was speaking, a gust of wind blew through the clearing, shaking the branches above them. Bennett looked up, smiling—until he noticed a large branch cracking under the weight of the wind. His eyes widened in alarm.

"Uh-oh… Not again!" Bennett exclaimed, grabbing Charmander and diving out of the way just as the branch came crashing down where they had been standing.

The two rolled to a stop, and Bennett let out a sigh of relief. "Whew… That was close. I told you about my bad luck, didn't I?"

Charmander blinked, then gave Bennett a reassuring smile, letting out a small puff of flame that seemed to say, "We've got this." Bennett laughed, his fear dissipating as he looked at his partner.

"You're right, Charmander. We're in this together!" Bennett said, getting back to his feet. "Let's keep going—carefully this time."

---

The pair eventually made their way to the city plaza, where they found Amber, who had just finished her patrol. She waved when she saw Bennett, jogging over to meet him, her Swablu perched comfortably on her head.

"Bennett! You finally got a Pokémon!" Amber said, her eyes shining with excitement as she looked at Charmander. "Oh, it's so cute!"

Bennett rubbed the back of his neck, a sheepish smile on his face. "Yeah, this is Charmander. We're still getting used to each other, but I think we're gonna make a great team."

Swablu chirped in greeting, fluttering down from Amber's head to land in front of Charmander. The two Pokémon eyed each other curiously before Swablu let out a cheerful chirp, and Charmander responded with an excited growl, waving its flaming tail.

Amber clapped her hands together, her smile widening. "They're getting along already! Hey, Bennett, how about we do a little friendly battle? Nothing too serious, just to see how our partners do!"

Bennett hesitated for a moment. He had just met Charmander, and he wasn't sure if they were ready for a battle. But the eager look on Amber's face and the encouraging smile from Charmander made up his mind.

"Alright! Let's give it a shot," Bennett said, his eyes filled with determination. "Charmander, let's show them what we can do!"

---

The two of them moved to an open area of the plaza, where a small crowd of curious citizens began to gather, intrigued by the sight of a Pokémon battle. Amber and Bennett stood opposite each other, their partners ready for action.

"Alright, Swablu, let's start with Peck!" Amber called out, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Swablu chirped, flapping its wings and diving towards Charmander, its beak aimed at the Fire-type. Bennett clenched his fists, trying to think quickly.

"Charmander, use Scratch!" Bennett shouted.

Charmander leapt forward, its claws glowing as it swiped at Swablu. The two Pokémon collided, their attacks landing at the same time. Swablu fluttered back, shaking its feathers, while Charmander stood its ground, its flame burning brightly.

The crowd cheered, and Bennett felt his heart swell with pride. "Great job, Charmander! Let's keep it up!"

Amber grinned, her competitive spirit ignited. "Not bad, Bennett! But we're not done yet. Swablu, use Sing!"

Swablu began to sing a soothing melody, its voice echoing through the plaza. Charmander's eyes grew heavy, and Bennett realized what was happening.

"Charmander, don't fall asleep! Try to stay awake!" Bennett called, but it was too late—Charmander let out a yawn and slowly sank to the ground, fast asleep.

Amber giggled, giving Bennett an apologetic smile. "Sorry, Bennett. Sing is a tricky move to deal with."

Bennett sighed, but he couldn't help but smile. "Yeah, I guess we still have a lot to learn. But we'll get there, right, Charmander?"

The crowd applauded as Amber walked over, holding out a hand to help Bennett up. "You did great, Bennett. And Charmander's got a lot of potential—I can tell. You two are gonna be an amazing team."

Bennett nodded, looking down at his sleeping partner with a fond smile. "Thanks, Amber. We'll keep working at it. And maybe next time, we'll win."

Amber grinned, giving him a thumbs-up. "I'll be looking forward to it!"

As the sun began to set, Bennett made his way back home, carrying Charmander in his arms. The Fire-type was still fast asleep, its tiny snores making Bennett chuckle. He looked at the Pokédex Hiroshi had given him, turning it over in his hands.

"A smartphone that knows all about Pokémon… Pretty neat, huh, Charmander?" Bennett said softly, even though his partner was too asleep to hear. "I think we're gonna learn a lot together. And maybe… maybe my luck isn't so bad after all."

As they walked, the city lights of Mondstadt began to flicker on, casting a warm glow over the streets. Bennett felt a sense of contentment settle over him—for the first time in a long time, he felt like things were finally looking up. With Charmander by his side, he was ready to face whatever challenges came his way, bad luck or not.

"Together, we can take on anything," Bennett whispered, a determined smile on his face as he looked towards the future. "Right, Charmander?"
