Chapter 20: The Rising Storm
---
The first light of dawn cast a dim, ominous glow over the city, as if the world itself sensed the battle approaching. Across the safe zone, survivors moved swiftly, checking weapons and tightening barricades, their faces set with grim determination. The infected horde, stretching out like a dark wave on the horizon, was closing in—and this time, they had an Overseer among them. This one felt sharper, deadlier, a more formidable force than the last.
Kaito stood on the barricade's edge, scanning the horde's movements with narrowed eyes. Behind him, Ayumi loaded her rifle, her gaze fixed on the infected. Ryo and Hana took positions along the line, each equipped and ready to fight.
Kaito activated his Leadership II skill, his voice projecting through the safe zone. "Today we hold the line. No one backs down, and no one stands alone. Together, we will defend our home!"
A cheer rose from the survivors. Morale was high, but Kaito could feel the tension simmering beneath. This wasn't just another fight; it was a battle for their very survival.
---
The First Assault
The horde surged forward, driven by the Overseer's commands. Gunfire erupted, breaking the dawn's silence as bullets tore into the advancing infected. Ayumi's rifle cracked repeatedly, taking down the faster targets with deadly precision. The Enhanced Defensive Turrets Kaito had installed rained down a relentless hail of bullets, cutting swaths through the horde. Yet, the infected kept coming.
Kaito's Conduit's Insight activated, helping him pinpoint the weaker points in the infected ranks, and he shouted orders to adjust their aim. "Focus fire on the left flank! Break their formation!"
For hours, the survivors fought in unison, holding off wave after wave of infected. But even as the numbers dwindled, the Overseer drove the horde harder, pushing them against the defenses with a relentless intensity. The survivors were beginning to tire; Kaito could see the weariness setting into their faces as the ammunition dwindled.
He turned to Ryo. "Status on supplies?"
"We're running low," Ryo replied, his face tense. "We can't keep this up much longer."
Kaito's mind raced. They needed a new plan—and he knew exactly what it would be.

Breaking Through
"Ayumi, I'm going for the Overseer," Kaito said, his tone urgent. "Cover me."
She looked at him, worry flashing in her eyes. "You're insane. But… alright. Just make sure you come back."
With Ayumi's cover fire raining down on the infected, Kaito broke from the barricades, charging straight into the horde. The infected turned toward him, but his Tracker's Instinct and agility guided him, allowing him to dodge and cut his way through. His blade flashed, slicing through any undead that dared to block his path.
As he reached the other side of the horde, he locked eyes with the Overseer. Up close, the creature's intelligence was unmistakable, its red eyes narrowing as it regarded him with cold calculation. Kaito felt a chill as the creature moved into a defensive stance, ready to fight him directly.
---
The Duel
Kaito lunged, his blade aimed at the Overseer's throat, but the creature swatted his attack away with a chilling speed. They clashed again and again, each strike countered by the other. The Overseer moved with fluid, lethal precision, its claws slicing through the air as Kaito dodged and struck back, searching for any opening.
He activated Rallying Cry, feeling his strength surge as his allies received a boost, their morale lifting. Across the battlefield, the survivors fought with renewed vigor, buying him the precious seconds he needed to focus on the Overseer.
With one final swing, Kaito's blade connected, slicing deep into the Overseer's neck. The creature let out a guttural shriek as its head rolled to the ground, its body collapsing in a heap. Instantly, the infected around him faltered, their coordination shattered. Without the Overseer's influence, the horde's attack fell apart, leaving the defenders a chance to finish the job.
---
Victory
Cheers erupted as the last of the infected fell, and Kaito stumbled back, exhausted but triumphant. Ayumi appeared beside him, offering her hand with a rare smile. "You did it," she said, helping him to his feet. "We did it."
Kaito looked around, seeing the relieved, triumphant faces of the survivors. They had faced impossible odds and emerged victorious. Though the sun had fully risen, casting warm light across the safe zone, he knew this was just the beginning.
Turning to his allies, Kaito raised his voice. "Today, we've proven our strength. We stood against the storm and came out stronger. Whatever comes next—we'll face it together."
The survivors nodded, their determination unwavering. They had come this far, and nothing would stop them now.
