Chapter 20: The Architects' Gambit

---

Kaito's heart pounded as he faced the armored soldier in the doorway, the red flashing lights casting a sickly glow across the control room. The alarm blared louder, cutting through the silence that had reigned just moments before. Behind the soldier, the rest of the group moved in, armed and determined. Kaito's fingers clenched around the handle of his weapon, his mind racing. They had come for answers, but now they had walked straight into the lion's den.

The soldier didn't move at first, standing perfectly still as the rest of his team filed into the room. Their armor gleamed in the flashing light, their faces hidden behind black visors. The sound of their boots on the cold concrete reverberated through the narrow corridors of the underground facility. Kaito's team was surrounded. There was no easy way out.

"You really think you can stop us?" the soldier's voice echoed through the room, cold and mechanical, as if he had said those same words a thousand times.

Kaito didn't answer at first. Instead, he shifted his stance, his gaze flickering between the soldiers. The only exit was the door they had just entered through, but there were too many of them, too many threats closing in. He glanced at Ryo, who was still working furiously at the console, his fingers flying across the keys. They had to buy him more time.

"What do you want?" Kaito finally asked, his voice steady, though a pulse of adrenaline shot through him.

The soldier's visor shifted slightly, a glint of amusement—or was it disdain?—shining through the opaque black glass. "What we want, Kaito Takeda, is for you to stop meddling. You've done enough damage already. But we'll give you a choice. You can leave, and we won't kill you. Or, you can stay, and we'll show you what happens when someone like you tries to defy the Architects."

Kaito narrowed his eyes. The Architect. The mysterious force that seemed to control the infected, to steer them toward a greater purpose. The very thing that had turned his life upside down, that had caused the collapse of civilization as they knew it. Everything about this moment screamed danger, but Kaito couldn't back down. Not now. Not when they were this close to the truth.

"I don't have the luxury of leaving," Kaito said, his tone cold. "We're here to stop whatever you're planning. You won't win."

The soldier's lips curled into what could almost be considered a smile. "You think you're the first to try and stop us? You won't be the last, either."

Ryo finally spoke up, his voice rising above the noise. "I'm in," he said, his tone steady. "I've got access to their security systems. The building's defenses are down. We've got one shot at this."

Without missing a beat, Kaito's hand shot out, signaling to the team. "Prepare to move. Take them out if you have to."

The soldiers didn't hesitate. At the signal, they spread out, taking positions around the room. Kaito's grip tightened on his weapon as the tension in the room skyrocketed. He could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him, and the ever-present hum of the system urging him to stay focused. The Slayer title still coursed through him, its power resonating beneath his skin, but he knew this wouldn't be easy.

The first soldier lunged at Kaito, his movements swift and calculated. Kaito's instincts kicked in, and he ducked, avoiding the strike just in time. The soldier's momentum carried him forward, and Kaito took the opportunity to push him against the nearest wall, forcing him to the ground with a heavy thud. He didn't stop to watch the soldier's reaction—he couldn't afford to. The rest of the soldiers were moving into position.

"Stay sharp!" Ayumi shouted from across the room, taking cover behind a nearby console. Her gun was raised, and her eyes were locked onto another soldier advancing toward them.

Kaito could see the others moving quickly, each of them taking up their designated positions. Ryo was still hunched over the console, his fingers flying across the screen, but he was also watching the battle unfold with one eye. Hana and Akari were crouched behind cover, ready to take action if needed.

The battle escalated quickly. One of the soldiers, a massive figure in black armor, charged at Ayumi, her weapon raised. She fired first, but the soldier deflected the shots with an energy shield, closing the distance between them in mere seconds. Ayumi dodged to the side, barely avoiding a brutal swipe that would have knocked her out cold.

Kaito surged forward, using his speed to close the gap between himself and the soldier. He could feel the power of the Slayer title flowing through him, lending him the strength and precision to land a decisive blow. With a quick jab, he sent the soldier stumbling back, losing his footing.

Ryo's voice broke through the chaos. "I've got it! They've activated the fail-safes in the building's core. If we don't stop them, this place is going to go up in flames."

Kaito's mind raced. The situation had just gotten a hundred times worse. They weren't just fighting for survival anymore—they were racing against the clock.

"We need to shut it down, now!" Kaito shouted.

But before anyone could react, a low hum filled the air, and the walls seemed to shake. The entire room felt like it was vibrating, the sound of machinery shifting deep within the facility.

"Too late," the soldier growled. "You're in our domain now."

The hum grew louder, and the entire facility seemed to come alive. The floor beneath their feet began to rumble, and the lights flickered in time with the pulsing sound. It was clear the Architects had been prepared for this very scenario. The building was rigged to explode, a final fail-safe to ensure that no one could ever stop their operation.

"We've got to move!" Ryo shouted, his fingers working furiously at the console, trying to override the system.

But the soldier in front of Kaito wasn't done yet. He lunged again, this time aiming for Kaito's chest. The attack was fast—faster than anything Kaito had faced before. He barely had time to react, but his reflexes kicked in, and he dodged, spinning away from the soldier's grasp.

"This is it," the soldier said, a sinister edge to his voice. "Your time is up."

Kaito's pulse raced. He couldn't afford to lose this fight—not now, not when they were so close to stopping the Architects' plans. With a deep breath, he focused, summoning the strength of the Slayer title, and charged at the soldier with everything he had. This time, there would be no retreat.

He landed a powerful blow to the soldier's chest, the force sending him sprawling across the room. The soldier groaned, struggling to rise, but Kaito didn't hesitate. He moved in again, his movements a blur, landing another crushing strike that sent the soldier crashing into the wall.

But just as Kaito was about to finish the fight, the ground beneath him gave way. The walls trembled as a massive explosion rang out from deep within the facility, causing the lights to flicker and go dark. The entire building seemed to be coming apart at the seams.

"We need to go. Now!" Ayumi yelled.

Kaito didn't need to be told twice. He turned to Ryo, who was still struggling to shut down the facility's fail-safes. "Can you stop it?" Kaito asked urgently.

Ryo shook his head, his face grim. "It's too late. The countdown has started."

"We have to escape," Kaito said, his voice tense.

With the building shaking and the countdown echoing in his mind, the team made their way toward the exit, Ryo guiding them through the labyrinthine halls. The hum of machinery and the roar of explosions grew louder with each passing second. They were running out of time.

Kaito didn't need the system to tell him that they were running out of time. The countdown was already on, and every step forward was a race against the clock. They had learned too much to turn back now. Whatever the Architects had planned, they would not let it go unchallenged.

As the building began to collapse around them, Kaito pushed forward, determined to escape with the answers they had come for—and to survive long enough to stop the Architects once and for all.
