Chapter 25: Shadows of the Factory
---
The factory loomed in the distance, its jagged silhouette cutting through the dim twilight. Rusted smokestacks pierced the sky, and broken windows glinted like jagged teeth. The air grew colder as Kaito Takeda and his companions approached, each step marked by an uneasy silence.
Michiko clung to Hana Yamamoto's side, her thin frame trembling. "This is it," she whispered, her voice laced with dread. "This is where they took them."
Kaito turned to the group, his gaze sweeping over Ayumi Sato, Ryo Takahashi, Akari Fujiwara, and Hana. Each of them carried their weapons ready, their faces masks of determination.
"Everyone knows the plan," Kaito said. "We stick together, no unnecessary risks. If we encounter Watchers, take them out quickly and quietly."
Ryo adjusted the grip on his katana. "And if we find survivors?"
"We get them out," Kaito replied firmly. "No one gets left behind."
The system's mission flickered in his mind:
[Mission Update: Eliminate 10 Watchers]
Progress: 2/10
Additional Objective: Investigate the Factory
Reward: 10,000 XP, ???
Whatever waited for them inside, Kaito knew it wouldn't be simple.

Entering the Factory
The group reached the factory gates, their movements cautious and deliberate. The heavy metal gate was ajar, hanging on rusted hinges that creaked ominously in the breeze. Ayumi stepped forward, her rifle raised, scanning the darkened interior.
"No immediate signs of movement," she said, her voice low. "But that doesn't mean it's empty."
Kaito nodded and led the group inside. The factory was eerily quiet, the only sounds their careful footsteps and the distant drip of water. The air smelled of oil and decay, a suffocating blend that made every breath feel heavier.
They moved through the vast space, their flashlights casting long shadows across the crumbling machinery and abandoned workstations. The deeper they went, the more oppressive the atmosphere became.
"It's like a tomb," Hana muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Let's hope it's not ours," Ryo replied grimly.
Suddenly, Akari held up a hand, signaling for everyone to stop. "Do you hear that?"
They froze, straining to listen. At first, there was only silence. Then came a faint sound—a low, guttural growl echoing from somewhere deep within the factory.
"They're here," Kaito said, his voice steady but tense.
---
The First Encounter
The group pressed forward, their senses heightened. The growling grew louder, interspersed with the sound of shuffling footsteps.
As they rounded a corner, they saw it: a Watcher standing in the shadows, its glowing eyes fixed on something unseen. Its movements were unnervingly deliberate, like a predator stalking its prey.
Kaito signaled for the group to halt. "Ayumi, take the shot," he whispered.
Ayumi nodded, steadying her rifle. She exhaled slowly and squeezed the trigger. The gunshot echoed through the factory, and the Watcher dropped instantly, its body hitting the floor with a sickening thud.
[Mission Progress: 3/10 Watchers Eliminated]
The notification flashed in Kaito's vision, but he barely registered it as a chorus of growls erupted around them.
"They know we're here!" Ryo shouted, drawing his blade as more Watchers emerged from the shadows.
---
The Fight
The factory erupted into chaos as the group engaged the Watchers. Kaito moved with precision, his sword cutting through one of the creatures with a swift, calculated strike. Beside him, Ayumi fired off shots, each one finding its mark.
Ryo fought with a ferocity that bordered on reckless, his katana slicing through limbs and torsos. "These things just keep coming!" he yelled, dodging a swipe from a Watcher.
"They're trying to surround us!" Akari shouted, her daggers flashing in the dim light as she took down another enemy.
"Hana, Michiko, stay back!" Kaito ordered, glancing over his shoulder to make sure they were safe.
Hana stood protectively in front of Michiko, her pistol trembling in her hands. Despite her fear, she managed to fire a shot that caught an advancing Watcher in the chest, sending it staggering back.
As the fight continued, Kaito felt the system's presence intensify. Each Watcher they defeated brought them closer to their goal, but the cost was mounting.

Discovering the Truth
After what felt like an eternity, the last Watcher fell, its body crumpling to the floor. The group stood amidst the carnage, their breaths heavy and their bodies battered.
"Is everyone okay?" Kaito asked, his voice strained.
"I've been better," Ryo muttered, wiping blood—some his, some not—from his face.
"We're alive," Ayumi said, reloading her rifle. "That's what matters."
As they caught their breath, Akari's voice broke the silence. "Kaito, over here. You need to see this."
She was standing near a large metal door, slightly ajar. Beyond it was a small room filled with monitors and papers. The group gathered around, their curiosity piqued despite their exhaustion.
"This looks like some kind of control room," Akari said, rifling through the papers.
Kaito scanned the monitors, many of which displayed grainy footage of the factory and its surroundings. One screen, however, showed something else: rows of people strapped to tables, their bodies convulsing as dark tendrils crawled over them.
"They're experimenting on people," Ayumi said, her voice laced with horror.
Michiko let out a choked sob, covering her mouth with trembling hands. "That's what they were doing… to the others."
Kaito's fists clenched as anger boiled within him. This wasn't just a random attack—this was organized, deliberate.
"They're trying to create more Watchers," he said, his voice hard. "Or something worse."
---
A New Mission
As the group processed the horrifying discovery, the system's presence surged within Kaito.
[Mission Update: Eliminate 10 Watchers]
Progress: 5/10
[New Objective: Destroy the Laboratory]
Reward: 20,000 XP, ???
Kaito's resolve hardened as he turned to the group. "We're not leaving until we put an end to this."
Ayumi nodded, her expression grim. "Agreed. Whatever they're doing here, we can't let it continue."
Ryo smirked, despite his fatigue. "Looks like we've got our work cut out for us."
As they prepared to delve deeper into the factory, Kaito couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. The Watchers were more than a threat—they were a puzzle, and the pieces were finally starting to come together.
