Chapter 17: Gathering Allies
---
Kaito and Ayumi moved quickly through the city streets, their pace urgent. The silence of the empty roads was suffocating, and the sense of looming danger weighed heavily on them both. They had one mission: find survivors in the eastern district and convince them to join their fight. The previous day's encounter with the Overseer had changed everything. If they didn't gather allies now, they wouldn't survive what was coming.
Kaito kept his focus on the mission ahead, the threat of the Overseer lingering in his thoughts. The infected were no longer mindless—they were strategizing. Organizing. And that meant they were up against something far worse than ever before. If they didn't act fast, the infected's growing numbers would overwhelm them.
"Do you think these survivors will join us?" Ayumi asked, glancing at Kaito as they picked up their pace.
"I hope so," Kaito said. "They need to understand that alone, they'll fall. But together, we stand a chance."
---
The Eastern Hideout
They arrived in the eastern district after an hour of careful movement, approaching a desolate café rumored to be the hideout. The place was quiet, almost too quiet, like the calm before a storm. Kaito's instincts were on high alert—he could feel eyes on them, but there was no sign of movement.
Kaito called out to the shadows. "We're survivors from the western district! We've come to talk."
After a tense moment, a woman stepped from the shadows, her hunting rifle aimed at them with unwavering steadiness. Her gaze was sharp, calculating.
"Why are you here?" she asked, her voice cautious.
"We need allies," Kaito said, his voice firm. "There's something far worse to the north. The infected are organizing, led by strategic leaders. We need every person we can gather."
The woman raised an eyebrow. "Leaders? Infected that can think?"
"We've seen them firsthand," Kaito replied. "If we don't unite, we're dead."
She eyed them for a long moment before dropping her rifle, a sigh escaping her lips. "Fine. I'm Akari. We've got a few here. Follow me."
---
Convincing the Group
Inside the café, a handful of survivors were gathered, all with hardened expressions. They weren't used to trusting strangers, and Kaito could see the skepticism in their eyes as they sized him and Ayumi up. Akari introduced them, and Kaito wasted no time.
"My name's Kaito. We've got a safe zone in the west, but the infected are changing. They're organized, led by something worse than any we've seen before. If we don't come together, we'll all fall."
A man scoffed, folding his arms. "And why should we trust you? How do we know you're not leading us into a trap?"
Ayumi stepped forward, her voice unwavering. "We're risking our lives to give you a chance. If we wanted to harm you, we wouldn't have come here alone."
Akari folded her arms, eyeing them closely. "What's in this for us? We've got our own setup here."
Kaito's gaze was steady. "Your setup won't be enough when the infected come in force. But together, we can hold a strong position. We need fighters, and we need numbers."
A younger woman in the group spoke up, her voice shaking slightly. "I've seen them moving like they're patrolling… We might not be safe here."
Akari met Kaito's eyes and nodded. "Alright. We'll join you. But if anything feels off, we're out."
Kaito nodded. "Agreed. Let's move out before nightfall."
---
Returning to the Safe Zone
The group packed up quickly, moving out as dusk fell. Kaito and Ayumi led the way, Akari and her group following closely behind. The streets were eerily quiet, but the unease hung thick in the air. As they neared the edge of the western district, Ayumi suddenly stopped, holding her hand up to signal the group to halt.
"Infected," she whispered, her eyes narrowing. Kaito followed her gaze, spotting a small group moving in tight formation, scanning the streets with a chilling precision.
"They're hunting," Ayumi muttered. "Like they're looking for something specific."
Kaito's heart skipped a beat. "The Overseer must be controlling them."
Akari's face went pale as she turned to Kaito. "If they're already out in force, we don't have much time."
Kaito didn't argue. He signaled for everyone to stay low, crouching behind an overturned truck as the infected passed. Every movement they made seemed deliberate, almost military in its coordination. It was a far cry from the aimless wandering of the infected they'd fought before.
Once the infected had passed, Kaito released a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
"They're searching," Kaito said quietly. "The Overseer is commanding them."
---
Fortifying the Alliance
Back at the safe zone, the new survivors quickly settled in. Ryo and Hana exchanged quick introductions before diving into the task of fortifying their defenses. With Akari and her group now part of the team, they had more hands to work with, but Kaito knew it wasn't enough. The infected were evolving, and they were running out of time.
Kaito spoke with Akari, sharing what they knew about the infected leaders and their growing intelligence. Akari listened, her face grim. "So it's not just about surviving anymore. We're facing a full-scale assault."
Kaito nodded. "But with your group, we stand a real chance."
Akari's jaw tightened. "Then we'll fight. Whatever it takes."
---
A New Mission
As the night settled in, Kaito gathered the team around the fire, laying out the next steps. The tension in the air was palpable, everyone aware of the storm brewing outside. They had to be ready.
Just as they were finishing up, a notification flashed before Kaito's eyes.

The message confirmed what Kaito already knew: an all-out assault was coming. The team had to be ready.
With a steady breath, Kaito stood tall. "We've got a fight ahead of us. We'll hold our ground, and we'll survive—together."
The group nodded in agreement. They were ready. No matter what the infected threw at them, they would stand united.
And as the night grew darker, Kaito could feel the weight of the storm that was coming—an unstoppable force. But for the first time, he felt ready to face it. With his team by his side, he knew they could endure anything.
The battle for their future was about to begin.
