Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

Xavier sat in his office, the city skyline stretched before him. It was just after dawn, and the world was still waking up, but he had been awake for hours, poring over every detail of the smear campaign against Elizabeth. Despite the press conference's success, the fallout wasn't over. The story had sparked conversations in the media, and Elizabeth's name was still trending for all the wrong reasons.

The phone on his desk buzzed. Karen's voice came through the intercom. "Mr. Cole, Ms. Marcus is here to see you."

Xavier straightened. "Send her in."

Victoria Marcus walked in with the same confidence she'd shown during their first meeting. She carried a sleek tablet under her arm, her expression as sharp as ever.

"You've been busy," she said, taking the seat opposite Xavier.

"And so has Thomas," Xavier replied curtly. "What do you have for me?"

Victoria placed the tablet on the desk and tapped the screen. A series of emails and financial records appeared.

"This is everything we've uncovered about the smear campaign," she said. "Thomas was working with an external PR firm specializing in aggressive reputation management. They planted the stories about Elizabeth."

Xavier's jaw tightened. "What about this PR firm? Can we shut them down?"

"They're small but slippery," Victoria admitted. "And they're smart. Most of the communication was routed through anonymous servers. They've done their best to cover their tracks."

Xavier's eyes narrowed. "But you found something."

Victoria smirked. "Of course. There's a pattern in their billing records. One of their payments came from a shell company linked to Crestfield Enterprises."

Xavier leaned back, his mind racing. "So, Crestfield isn't just entertaining Thomas—they're actively supporting him."

Victoria nodded. "It seems so. If you can prove this connection, it'll tarnish both Crestfield's and Thomas's reputations. But it won't be easy. Crestfield's lawyers are some of the best in the business."

Xavier stared at the data, his resolve hardening. "I don't care how difficult it is. I'm not letting this slide."

Victoria's smile widened slightly. "I thought you'd say that. I'll keep digging."

Later that day, Xavier gathered his closest allies in the company for a strategy session. Elizabeth, Clara, and Karen sat around the table, along with Caldwell and Peterson from the board.

Xavier stood at the head of the table, his presence commanding. "Thomas and Crestfield have escalated this to a level I can't ignore. They're not just targeting me—they're targeting Elizabeth and the integrity of this company. We need to fight back."

Elizabeth spoke first. "We need to counter their narrative, not just with words but with actions. Transparency worked for the press conference, but it won't hold if we don't back it up with something tangible."

Clara nodded. "Agreed. We should launch an initiative—something big and bold that shows Cole Enterprises is stronger than ever. It'll shift the focus away from the drama and back to what we're good at."

Xavier considered this. "What about the sustainability project we've been developing? The one focusing on renewable energy in underdeveloped regions?"

"That's perfect," Karen said. "It's innovative, it's impactful, and it's exactly the kind of story the media loves. We can roll it out within weeks if we push resources toward it."

Peterson chimed in. "And while we're doing that, we can quietly investigate Crestfield's involvement. If we find proof of collusion, we'll expose them when the time is right."

Xavier nodded. "It's a start. But I also want to tighten security. If Crestfield and Thomas are willing to play dirty, we need to be prepared for anything."

Caldwell's voice was firm. "You've got the board's full support, Xavier. Whatever resources you need, you'll have them."

The meeting ended with a renewed sense of purpose. As everyone filed out, Xavier lingered, his gaze drifting to Elizabeth.

"You don't have to be involved in this, you know," he said quietly.

Elizabeth crossed her arms, meeting his eyes with determination. "I'm not going anywhere, Xavier. If they want a fight, they'll get one—from both of us."

Meanwhile, Thomas sat in his penthouse, his frustration mounting. The smear campaign hadn't gone as planned, and now Victor Crestfield was pressuring him to deliver results.

His phone buzzed, and he answered it with a curt, "What?"

"It's me," Victor said, his tone cold. "We need to talk."

Thomas gritted his teeth. "I'm handling it."

"Doesn't look like it," Victor snapped. "Xavier already countering your moves. If you can't destabilize him, this partnership is over."

Thomas clenched his fist. "I'll deliver. Just give me time."

"You don't have much left," Victor warned before hanging up.

Throwing his phone onto the couch, Thomas poured himself a drink. He was running out of options, and desperation was beginning to creep in.

Two weeks later, Xavier and his team unveiled the sustainability project. The announcement was a resounding success, garnering praise from both the media and the business world. It painted Cole Enterprises as a forward-thinking company committed to making a difference, and it drowned out the negativity surrounding the smear campaign.

But the victory was short-lived.

Late one night, Xavier received an anonymous tip. The caller's voice was distorted, but the message was clear:

"Check the legal department. Someone's been leaking information to Crestfield."

Xavier hung up, his stomach churning. The idea of a traitor within the company was almost too much to bear. He immediately contacted Victoria, who agreed to investigate.

By the end of the week, the betrayal was confirmed. A junior lawyer in the legal department had been passing sensitive documents to Crestfield in exchange for bribes.

Xavier confronted the lawyer personally, his voice cold and controlled. "You betrayed the company for a quick payday. Do you have any idea what you've done?"

The lawyer, pale and trembling, stammered, "I-I didn't think it would go this far. They promised it was just... routine information."

Xavier's glare could have frozen fire. "You're fired. And you'll be hearing from our legal team."

As security escorted the traitor out, Xavier felt a mixture of anger and exhaustion. The war with Thomas was taking its toll, and he knew the worst was yet to come.

That night, as he lay beside Elizabeth, Xavier  stared at the ceiling. "I'm starting to wonder if this will ever end."

Elizabeth  turned toward him, her hand resting on his chest. "It will. But only if you keep fighting. Thomas wants you to give up—to think it's hopeless. Don't let him win."

Xavier looked into her eyes, drawing strength from her unwavering support.

"You're right," he said softly. "I won't let him win."

But even as he spoke the words, a nagging feeling lingered in the back of his mind. He couldn't shake the sense that Thomas still had one more card to play—and when he did, it could change everything.
