"Forget it, let's not dwell on this," Leng Yaozhu said with a shake of her head. "Shaoyu, remember this: unless you can break past level 100 and ascend to godhood, never provoke Di Tian. Not even as a quasi-god."
A quasi-god was only a hair's breadth away from true divinity, a pinnacle of mortal achievement and a god in all but name. When a soul master reached level 99, they were called a Limit Douluo. Yet, even among Limit Douluo, distinctions existed. Those newly ascended were half-gods, while those at the pinnacle of their strength were considered quasi-gods.
In today's world, there were no fewer than ten Limit Douluo, but quasi-gods were exceedingly rare. Leng Yaozhu herself was only a half-god.
"Teacher, aren't you thinking a bit too far ahead? I've just reached Soul Elder," Jing Shaoyu said with a helpless eyeroll.
"What do you mean, too far ahead?" Leng Yaozhu said, clearly displeased. "You're my disciple. If you can't achieve the Limit Douluo stage and at least reach quasi-god level, it'd be embarrassing! So, no, it's not too far ahead."
"Fine, you're the teacher, you're always right," Jing Shaoyu said, conceding with a wry smile.
"Alright, go pack your things. We're preparing to leave," Leng Yaozhu said, returning to the topic at hand.
Jing Shaoyu's eyes flashed with eagerness as he quickly said, "Teacher, wait, I have something to say."
"Speak," Leng Yaozhu said simply.
Jing Shaoyu organized his thoughts before replying, "Teacher, I want to try contracting the Divine Unicorn first. If I fail, then I'll attach soul rings to my second martial soul. Is that okay?"
"Give me a reason—one that convinces me," Leng Yaozhu said, her face calm, though her eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion.
"A feeling," Jing Shaoyu said with a bitter smile. "Teacher, I can only call it a feeling. I can't explain it, but I have this strong sense that if I don't contract the Divine Unicorn first and instead attach soul rings to my second martial soul, I'll lose something very important."
"A feeling?" Leng Yaozhu's tone carried a hint of irritation. "You're risking your life based on a feeling? Let me remind you, that Divine Unicorn's cultivation level is 50,000 years. Your body's current limit is 33,000 years. How do you plan to bridge the 17,000-year gap?
"Even though soul spirits and soul rings are generally gentler, exceeding your body's limits will still lead to death by body explosion! I regret exposing the Divine Unicorn to you so early. If you truly want it and don't want to attach soul rings to your second martial soul prematurely, my advice is this: let Red Ruby take the fourth ring slot. Once you reach Soul King, you can revisit contracting the Divine Unicorn."
Leng Yaozhu's lengthy response revealed her frustration and regret. Jing Shaoyu felt a pang of guilt but remained resolute in his stance.
"Teacher, don't be upset," Jing Shaoyu said, attempting to soothe her. "I know my idea sounds ridiculous, but I'm serious. This isn't about avoiding attaching soul rings to my second martial soul. I truly feel as though this is some kind of guidance from fate."
"Guidance from fate?" Leng Yaozhu murmured, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Does fate, that nebulous concept, really exist?"
"Teacher, didn't you once say that if a soul master and a soul spirit achieve mutual understanding, the soul master can ignore their body's limits and contract the soul spirit?" Jing Shaoyu asked. "I could try to communicate with the Divine Unicorn and earn its trust before signing a contract!"
"Hah! Out of all the things I've said, that's the one you remember?" Leng Yaozhu said, exasperated. She gently flicked Jing Shaoyu's forehead. "Yes, I said that, but there's a condition. So far, cases of contracting soul spirits through mutual understanding have only involved hundred- or thousand-year soul spirits. The difference in cultivation levels between the soul master and soul spirit has never exceeded 10,000 years.
"How can you be sure this method will work for a black-ranked soul spirit? And how do you plan to win the trust of a Divine Unicorn, a proud and aloof creature?"
"Teacher, if I don't try, how will I know if it's possible?" Jing Shaoyu said, his voice steady and his gaze unwavering.
"You stubborn child!" Leng Yaozhu's frustration deepened. But when she looked into Jing Shaoyu's resolute eyes, her anger dissipated. Sighing, she said, "Fine, I'll give you a chance. But you only have one week. If you can't earn the Divine Unicorn's trust in that time, you must follow my plan."
"I understand, Teacher!" Jing Shaoyu replied with a delighted expression. "Let's go find the Divine Unicorn now!"
"Not so fast," Leng Yaozhu said, holding him back. "Let's make one thing clear: you'll succeed only if the Divine Unicorn allows you to mount it and touch its horn."
Divine Unicorns were known for their pride and aloofness but were equally known for their loyalty. Once they accepted a being, they would willingly submit, offering their horn, body, and unwavering devotion without hesitation or betrayal.
Leng Yaozhu's conditions perfectly aligned with the Divine Unicorn's nature.
"No problem!" Jing Shaoyu said confidently, though he felt less certain inside.
Leng Yaozhu nodded in satisfaction. "Alright, let's go!"
Instead of leaving the workshop, the two walked a short distance to the advanced Spirit Ascension Platform's login pods. Leng Yaozhu opened one, pressed a sequence of buttons on the left-hand control panel, and activated it.
"Shaoyu, get in," she instructed.
"Okay." Jing Shaoyu nodded and climbed into the familiar pod. He closed his eyes, awaiting the transfer.
After setting up the second pod, Leng Yaozhu entered as well.
Moments later, Jing Shaoyu's vision was filled with bright light. Instinctively shielding his eyes, he slowly opened them to see a picturesque natural landscape. By the clear lake, the Divine Unicorn lay gracefully on the verdant grass, its pristine white wings draped elegantly on the ground.
"Are you ready?" Leng Yaozhu's calm voice came from his side.
"Yes, I'm ready," Jing Shaoyu said, his gaze fixed on the Divine Unicorn.
"Then go ahead," Leng Yaozhu said. "I'll watch from the shadows. Although the Divine Unicorn isn't highly aggressive, it's still a 50,000-year soul spirit. Be cautious."
"Understood, Teacher," Jing Shaoyu replied.
Leng Yaozhu's figure flickered and vanished. Jing Shaoyu took a deep breath and began walking toward the Divine Unicorn.
The creature stood as soon as Jing Shaoyu appeared, its intelligent, piercing gaze locking onto him.
As a proud and unyielding spirit, the Divine Unicorn understood its predicament. Its future was bleak: either live indefinitely as a prisoner in this confined space until its essence withered away, or submit to a human, sharing the same fate upon their demise.
Many had tried to subdue it before, but its pride would never allow it to bow to a human. It would rather die than tarnish its noble spirit.
Noticing Jing Shaoyu's approach, the Divine Unicorn glanced at him briefly before looking away, as if to avoid unnecessary distractions.
Unaware of the Divine Unicorn's inner turmoil, Jing Shaoyu steadily advanced, analyzing his options to win its trust. He stopped about
ten meters away, offering a warm smile.
"Divine Unicorn, hello," he said gently
