Lena's POV
As the driver was driving, my mind was racing with a lot of memories of my mother's laughter, the stories of our past, and the sacrifices Margaret has been making for me.
"What could have happened to my mum? Why am I not at the hospital yet?" I said to myself.
As we were going, the driver was not moving very fast, I told him to drive very fast.
As he hold the steering wheel very tight, he moved as fast as possible as I tried to fight my tears from dropping.
The road was blurry before me, The urgency and weight of the situation all over me.
When I finally arrived at the hospital, I rushed through the doors, my heart was beating very fast.
I went to the reception desk, my voice was shaking. "I am here for Margaret Thompson. I got a call…"
"Stay here for a moment please," the nurse said, typing fast on the computer. "Please have your seat. I will get someone to attend to you soon."
My mind kept on racing, I was feeling so anxious with every seconds passed.
I could not ignore the feeling that something was very wrong.
"Mom, please be fine," I muttered underneath, holding my phone tightly as I waited, not knowing what is going to happen.
I started walking up and down the hospital waiting room, my heart was beating very fast in my chest as I checked the time anxiously, It felt like time was really moving very slow.
Just then, a doctor stepped in through the doors, checking the room until he saw me. I felt a feeling of hope but I quickly maintained it.
"Lena Thompson?" he called, his voice sounding serious and professional.
"Yes, that's my name! How is my mom?" I rushed over to his side, was not able to stop my anxiety.
"She is stable for now," he started, with his voice mixing with profession and sympathy.
"But I need to say some words to you about her condition." He said looking at me.
I nodded, trying to breathe. "What happened?"
"She collapsed due to tiredness and dehydration. We believe the stress of her illness has taken a heavy toll on her health. She has been through a lot, and I think she has been feeling so strong all this while."
My heart dropped, asking. "Can I see her?"
"Yes, but her consciousness is not stable right now, she's just in and out of it. You might want to get ready and prepare yourself." He stopped for a while.
Then continued, "She was saying something to herself when we brought her in here."
"It might not make any sense, but it could be very important to her health." He explained further.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, thinking about what her words can be.
"Something about a 'lost life' and 'her regrets,'" he said carefully.
"It used to happen when patients will express their divided thoughts, but it is worth putting into consideration at times because it might be related to her condition."
I felt a cold run down my body. "Okay… I will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you so much."
The doctor gave me an empathy nod before leading me to my mother's room and he finally told me. "You need to see me for the bills after checking your mum." Then he left.
As I stepped inside, Seeing my mum lying down in the hospital bed again sent a lot of emotions over me.
Tubes and monitors were surrounding her, and she looked very weak and fragile, the opposite of the strong woman I had always known for a long time.
"Mom?" I called, my voice was pretty shaking.
My mum's eyes opened, I noticed a confusion on her face. "Lena?" she murmured, her voice was sounding very weak.
"I am here, Mom. I am right here," I said, moving closer to her bedside. "You really scared me. What were you even thinking? You need to take good care of yourself mum."
My mum's eyes shifted past me, her expression was very far away.
"I… I didn't mean to make you worry. I just… I thought I had more time." Her voice went off, and her brow was as if she were fighting with a very difficult memory.
"What do you mean?" I asked her gently, trying to keep my voice calm. "What did you think you had more time for?"
My mum's lips moved as if she was trying to look for the words she was going to say, but instead, she closed her eyes. "Everything..… It's just so complicated," she murmured, tears coming down her eyes.
"There are things you don't know at all Lena. Things I have been keeping from you just for me to protect you."
"What are you even talking about? Mom, please, just tell me, let me know what is going on please!" My heart was racing as I hold my mother's hand.
"I cannot… I should not," My mum replied, fear was moving slowly into her voice.
"You don't understand… they will come for you. They will come for us!" She said further.
"Who? Who is going to come for us?" I asked shaking, fear rushing through my system. "Mom, please, I need to know that but you need to be fine first!"
But before my mum could even say anything, her eyes was rolling back, and she collapsed against the pillow.
The monitors started beeping heavily, and I felt my blood was running cold, I felt the shiver all over my body.
"Mom! No! Someone, please help!" I shouted, my voice raising in shock as I pressed the button to call for someone's help.
The door opened immediately, and the doctor rushed in, quickly checking what was happening.
"What happened?" he asked, his calm attitude was changing to urgency.
"She was just talking to me now now! She said something is wrong! Mom!" I cried, tears coming down my face as I felt really helpless.
The doctor moved aside, calling for some team to assist him. "We need to make her stable. You need to leave this place!"
As I was pushed outside, I watched in fear as they worked to wake my mother, my heart pounding heavily in my chest.
As at that moment, the weight of my mum's words kept on repeating itself on my mind. "They will come for us."
And just like that, my world began to fall apart, filled with more questions than answers.
The meaning of my mother's huge warnings banging on my head like a huge stone....
