Chapter 9 - Apprenticeship

I carefully closed the holes in the ceiling and walls. I started to watch the holes I closed from a little further. I enjoyed what I was doing. It relaxed me, who had been bored for a long time, a little. I washed my hands and started to warm up by the fireplace alone. Time was passing like water, it was almost evening. According to Siri, it was 7 in the afternoon. It was getting late, I wondered why my family was so late? I hope nothing happened to them. While I was lost in thought, the door suddenly opened and Arwa and Daneel entered. Both of their hands were full. In the woven basket in Arwa's hand, there was a leg that I thought belonged to a small animal.

In the baskets in Daneel's hand, one was full of stones and the other was full of firewood. I took the baskets in Daneel's hand and put them next to the fire. Arwa's mood was good. She was happy that she was still useful as a healer.

"Alek, my child, you did a wonderful job. You didn't have to tire yourself out so much. We'll take care of you. My child, the gods really love you, you're lucky. Today I helped a villager give birth. They gave me a leg of goat for my help. Daneel will prepare a delicious meat dish according to the local style for you. Once you eat it, you'll want to eat it again," the woman said in a playful tone. Since I was shy as always, I just nodded.

"Well, my child, did a bee sting your tongue? We're here for you, don't be shy, speak as you wish. Besides, we're preparing this meat dish especially for you. You're nothing but skin and bones. My lion, eat and get stronger," the woman said with a face that was half angry and half smiling. For some reason, the woman always seemed funny to me.

"Okay, I'll obey your words, I'll be more talkative," I said with a laugh.

Daneel started preparing the meat in the kitchen. Arwa and I sat by the fire and started chatting.

Arwa, where did you go to help with whose birth? You took a while to come, I was worried about you," I said.

"I helped a newlywed couple your age give birth to their first child on the way out of the village. If the birth is not done properly, there is a risk of both the mother and the baby dying. This risk decreases in safe hands," the woman said and then she patted her own belly and said the following in a slightly playful tone.

"Hahaha Huhuhu I'm old but I'm still functional. My late mother used to say that I inherited my grandmother's healing hands," the old woman said. I didn't believe the woman had miraculous hands. I thought she was a healer because of her daily knowledge and experience. People my age had to go to high school in my old world. In this world, getting married and having children caused me to experience my first culture shock. After all, it was an underdeveloped era, when human life spans were short. Dannel and Arwa were an exceptional couple who lived longer than their peers.

"You've proven that you're an experienced healer, and in my opinion you're not that old, at most middle-aged. I wish I could be as knowledgeable/talented in medical matters as you are" I said these things naively.

"Hahaha Huhuhu, my dear, as long as you want to learn. No one wants to share their knowledge easily, but I'm not someone else and I'm getting old, I don't have children, I'm looking for someone to take my place. I can teach you to make medicines from the materials I see as healing. You see, I get nice gifts thanks to my knowledge. If you're as good as me, you can get nice gifts too. Besides, your life would be a little better. Would you like to be my apprentice and learn?" Arwa said, looking at me expectantly, in a cheerful mood as always. "

"I want to be your apprentice and be of use to people," I said. Anyone who was in my shoes would want to learn. In this world and in the old world, being a healer was a profession that was accepted as pleasant by people.

"Okay, my child, I will start teaching you what I know starting tomorrow. I would like to start teaching you today, but I'm tired and need to rest." The woman heard what I said and said these cheerfully. When I heard these, I accepted them and moved on to another topic.
