Marina POV
I sat by my mum's hospital bedside holding unto her hands. It felt like she would slip away from this world if I don't hold on to her hands. I glanced at her pale face. She was slowly dieing right before my eyes and I had no idea.
" We need to perform the surgery soon, unless she might have only a month to live."
The doctor's words kept echoing in my head. I used my thumb to wipe the tears that were welling at the corner of my eyes, threatening to fall. I turned my face towards the door that opened and I came face to face with my sister. She walked slowly towards the other side of the bed tears already streaming down. I uttered not a single word to her as her silent sob filled the room.
I decided that Mia should stay with Mum while I go home to get some that Mia might need. She was going to spend the night at mum's bedside while I worked. I looked at my wristwatch had an hour to get everything and still appear at the club that night. Everything was becoming extremely exhausting for one day. In one day, I lose a job, lose friend, almost lost my mum and might even lose my third job.
As I went through Mia's wardrobe trying to get her cloth, a small box dropped. I examined the familiar box in my hand, it looked like dad's own. It had the letter 'L' inscribed on it. I opened the box to see an envelope. Out of curiosity, I pulled out the envelope and opened it, letting the content of the envelope out. My eyes skimmed through the document. It was a document signifying and authenticating that my father's name was Daniel Lyle.
My eyebrows furrowed at the strange name. I had never heard my father being called Lyle. I flipped over to the next document. It was a my father's birth certificate and a letter of forfeiture of family fortune.
" It can only be passed on to the next generation if his child is found." I stared at that line in the document.
The name Lyle was strange but it oddly felt familiar, like I had heard it somewhere other than here.
My eyes widened in realization as my hands flew to cover my mouth that parted open in shock. There was no way my father had connections with the power Lyle dynasty. I folded the paper and placed in my coat determined to uncover this matter properly.
Why was Mia in possession of the box?
" Late as always" the club manager shouted as I ran out of the changing room in my uniform.
" Sorry sir." I replied curtly. Throughout the bus ride the only thought that filled my mind was how I could save my mum.
Flashback
" Mum, I want that dress." Little Marina said pointing at a pink coloured dress in the mall.
" If you want that dress, you would have to earn it." Her mum said as she kept putting the important needs in into the cart.
" But I want it now!" Marina whined and started sobbing almost making a scene.
" Quit whining Marina, no one would ever give you anything for free. You have to work your ass out for it."
End of flashback
The only decision I could come up with was to hold on to my two remaining jobs tightly. Even if I had to work overnight but I had to do anything to save my mum.
I walked through the sweaty crowd of people serving drinks and food.
" Miss Marina?" I turned around to see who it was. It was a huge man dressed in black suit.
" My boss wants to see you in the VIP booth."
VIP booth? Today might just be my lucky day. The VIP booth is where lots of money could be made.
" Ok" I answered following him up the stairs leading to the booth. I stood there as I watched the two strippers walk away.
" He would see you now." The man dressed in black suit said before ushering me in.
" Miss Marina." The man seated on the cushion exclaimed as I walked into the room. He puffed out smoke from his mouth before dropping the cigarette butt on the ashtray.
" Yes sir, what would you like to have today." I said before dishing out my award winning smile. He chuckled.
" Have a seat Miss Marina." I looked at him confused before slowly sitting down on the chair.
" I'm here to give you an opportunity that could change your life."
" What is that?"
" My name is Oscar Langston, the CEO of Langston dynasty. Cross Tech rival"
" I'm aware."
" Nice, there's an opening for a personal assistant at Cross Tech. I heard you were recently fired."
" Yea, today. I don't have the qualifications for this though."
" Well the only qualification you need is Loyalty" he said while taking the cigarette in between his lips.
" Loyalty?" I furrowed my eyebrows waiting for him to explain more. Sensing my confusion he continued.
" I need you to be my eyes and ears in the Cross Tech"
" What do I stand to gain?"
" I heard your mum has just a month to live." Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as his words reminded me of the dilemma I was in.
" You could either save her or not. Do you think this job can get you the medical fees for the surgery?"
He was actually right, I couldn't get the medical fees with this job. The thought of getting caught crossed my mind but I quickly shunned it. The only focus was getting my mum back.
" Do we have a deal Miss Marina?"
" Deal, when do I start?"
