Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The First Step of the Long March

The days of military training were always quite dull. There were no accidental encounters with beautiful senior sisters, nor any unexpected interactions with charming female teachers. Even opportunities to talk to the girls in his class were scarce. The only comfort for Chen Han Sheng was that they had finally survived the first week.

Today, there was an important event for the Public Administration Class 2 — the election of the class monitor.

The meeting was hosted by the class counselor, Guo Zhongyun, who was both the host and the judge.

"Everyone, after a week of getting to know each other, you should have a good understanding of one another. We encourage self-nominations, so anyone interested in serving the class, please feel free to come up and speak," Guo Zhongyun announced.

After he finished speaking, everyone exchanged glances. The girls all turned their attention to Hu Linyu, while the boys looked at Chen Han Sheng.

Guo Shaoqiang, worried that Hu Linyu might become the class monitor, urged Chen Han Sheng, "Come on, you have to go up! If you become the class monitor, we'll have a good time. If that girl becomes the leader, how can I skip class in the future?"

Chen Han Sheng wasn't in a hurry. He smiled slightly and replied, "Lady first."

Jin Yangming rolled his eyes. Chen Han Sheng could act more pretentious than he did. Jin Yangming's way of showing off was much more straightforward, but Chen Han Sheng was quiet and sly.

"Asshole!" Jin Yangming muttered. Since Chen Han Sheng had introduced the "intellectual game" of card playing into the boys' dorm, no one really cared about him anymore.

Still, Jin Yangming supported Chen Han Sheng for class monitor. If Chen Han Sheng became class monitor, it would benefit the boys, and Jin Yangming wasn't going to oppose him.

A loud sound was heard as a bench scraped backward.

Hu Linyu had initially planned to be a bit more reserved and wait for her competitors to act first. However, when she saw Guo Zhongyun's frown, she realized she couldn't wait any longer. If she did, no one would become the class monitor.

At this point, Chen Han Sheng had already made it clear that he would not go first, even if the election failed today.

"Hello, everyone. My name is Hu Linyu. I believe you are all familiar with me, as I was the one who assisted with your registration..." Hu Linyu took the stage. Starting with the registration day on September 1st was a good strategy, as everyone had a deep impression of her from that day. Then she elaborated on her contributions during military training and her hopes for the future of the class.

"I am enthusiastic, outgoing, and caring. If I am elected class monitor, I will use my energy and clear mind to assist Teacher Guo and serve the class, ensuring a bright future for Public Administration Class 2."

"Thank you!"

After finishing her speech, Hu Linyu bowed to Guo Zhongyun, receiving applause.

Guo Zhongyun commented, "Thank you, Hu Linyu, for your wonderful speech. I still remember how proactive you were during registration, and I hope everyone can learn from your spirit. Is there anyone else who would like to give a speech?"

Hu Linyu felt nervous after she sat down, even trembling a little. Sitting beside her, Shen Youchu gently patted her back to comfort her.

Hu Linyu forced a smile, but then a loud bench scraping sound made her stiffen. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a tall figure approaching the podium.

Shen Youchu lowered her head slightly, quietly observing this boy who looked mischievous and wild, with his smile full of rebelliousness. She felt a little intimidated.

Chen Han Sheng took the stage, and the boys responded enthusiastically. Apart from his own dorm, all the other boys were clapping wildly. Yang Shichao even whistled like a rascal.

"Please, boys, be a little reserved. I'm not a beauty," Chen Han Sheng said, laughing, as he pressed his hands down to calm the crowd.

"Ugh, come on, hush..." The boys cheered louder.

Chen Han Sheng raised an eyebrow. "Zhu Chenglong, you're the loudest. Why don't you come up here instead?"

Zhu Chenglong was the troublemaker who had argued with the instructor earlier, but Chen Han Sheng was one of the few who dared to joke around with him.

"Heh heh." Zhu Chenglong scratched his uneven hair and grinned. "If someone else becomes the class monitor, I won't accept it. But if I do, no one else will agree. Why bother?"

Chen Han Sheng ignored him, cleared his throat, and said, "I'll keep it brief. I have just a few promises."

"If I become the class monitor, I will try to communicate with the teachers before exams to ensure that no one fails; I will strive for scholarships, financial aid, and party membership, making sure that students who meet the criteria won't be left out; if there are opportunities to develop personal abilities, I will arrange them so everyone can have a meaningful college life."

Chen Han Sheng suddenly became serious.

"Everyone, we are far behind East Sea University. Since our starting point is lower than theirs, we need to make up for it in other ways. If we fall behind, we must catch up. If we're confused, we must learn. If we're ignorant, we must socialize. To improve, we must be self-disciplined…"

The classroom slowly quieted down. Some people weren't used to the serious side of Chen Han Sheng, while others found his words more direct and practical, unlike Hu Linyu's idealistic promises.

This was why Chen Han Sheng waited until the end to speak. While Hu Linyu talked about grand ideas, he addressed practical matters — exams, scholarships, and personal development.

After he finished, Guo Zhongyun calmly said, "Chen Han Sheng has many strengths, such as organizational skills, coordination abilities, and leadership. Is there anyone else who would like to come up and compete?"

After asking three times with no response, Guo Zhongyun closed the door to the election. "Now, let's vote for Chen Han Sheng and Hu Linyu."

As expected, Hu Linyu received all the girls' votes, while Chen Han Sheng gained the support of all the boys and some of the girls.

The class monitor for Public Administration Class 2 was finally decided, and Chen Han Sheng won with a surprising victory.

Guo Zhongyun felt relieved. Since Chen Han Sheng had so much support, there was no need for him to use his power as a counselor to force the outcome.

The boys were naturally thrilled. While Chen Han Sheng might seem like a rogue, he was loyal, and he commanded respect.

Although the girls were a bit disappointed, they didn't object.

After the meeting, Hu Linyu walked dejectedly across campus. She felt like her college life had lost its meaning now that she didn't win.

"Hu Linyu."

Someone suddenly called her from behind.

Hu Linyu turned around and was surprised to see Chen Han Sheng, still wearing that carefree smile.

"What do you want? Are you here to show off your victory?" she said coldly.

Chen Han Sheng thought to himself, this isn't some anime, Hu Linyu really has too much drama.

"I'll treat you to dinner tonight. Let's talk," he said.

Hu Linyu raised her head, surprised. "You stole the class monitor position just to talk to me about dating?"

Chen Han Sheng was stunned for a moment.

"Damn it, looks like women with a high opinion of themselves aren't just like Xiao Rongyu," he muttered.
