Chapter 40 - Emergency deployment

Deafening sirens echoed throughout the city, which was originally quiet, was suddenly filled with excitement. All the people who were sleeping or half asleep woke up and got up in a hurry and ran to the window, wanting to know what was going on.

At the temporary command post in the city center, Harry listened to the liaison officer's information with an ugly face. Layers of cold sweat continued to pour from his forehead. When he heard the last part, he couldn't help but banged the table, and shouted angrily, "Is the eastern sentinel just a decoration? Why did you wait until nearly a thousand infected people came to your door before raising the alarm?"

"Now... We can't contact the sentry right now, so we don't know what the situation is there." The liaison officer lowered his head and looked very helpless as he gave that answer.

"I don't know... I don't know."

Harry clenched his fists tightly and slammed the table hard again, venting anger in his heart. Then he took a deep breath, adjusted his condition, and calmed down as quickly as possible.

I knew that now was not the time to be angry. No matter what happened, I needed to think of something to overcome this crisis. At this moment, he couldn't help but secretly lament that if they had followed the regulations, where everyone had to sleep on the buses, they would have been able to evacuate immediately and not need to worry about infected people at all.

"It's definitely too late to regret now..." Harry closed his eyes tightly, thought for a while, and then slowly said, "First, have all the peripheral equipment personnel withdraw. Tell them to throw grenades in the way and try to lure the infected away, giving us time to prepare."

"Yes!" Hearing this order, the liaison officer immediately yelled yes, turned around and pulled out the radio. He got up and walked into the distance.

Slowly sitting down in the chair, Harry narrowed his eyes and began to analyze the current situation. The infected people were not far from the city. The sound of the alarm at that moment must have alerted people, leaving them to prepare.

But there are only a few simple checkpoints in the city, which are vulnerable to a large number of infected people. However, without bunkers it is impossible to cope with such a large number of infected people.

In such a hurry, Harry suddenly remembered the size of the passenger car, and his eyes suddenly lit up. It turned out that this could serve as a huge wall!

Thinking of this, he suddenly stood up and shouted, "Inform the people driving to park the buses side by side on the surrounding streets! Then, ask all soldiers to bring enough ammunition and distribute at intersections. When passenger vehicles are on standby, they will be deployed there as a defence zone. We must do everything we can to stop the infected!"

He then said to Colbert and Justin, who were next to him, "Colbert, you must go to the main road on the west front. This is the first place where the infected are likely to attack, and it's also the place with the highest number of enemies. You have to take command there. Use the gasoline from the tanker truck to make Molotov cocktails. They will be much more lethal to those infected than grenades."

"Justin, lead your armed team and set up controls on the side paths. After all, the city doesn't have just one entrance or exit, and infected people can use other paths to gain access. We must not allow the infected to pass through these accesses, because if they do, everyone inside will be in danger."

"......"

A barrage of orders came out of Harry's mouth. Whenever he said an order, the people around him would immediately send their instructions. Even Colbert and Justin didn't say much. After receiving the order, no one doubted at all, because everyone knew that every minute and every second was very valuable now.

Harry took the glass of water from the table and took a sip, his throat moistened. He understood that only two thousand people could not be evenly distributed in all areas of defense and that manpower must be insufficient.

He was silent for a while, and then said to a tall soldier next to him, "Ask all the soldiers in the village to gather all the civilians. I have something to tell you."

.....

At this moment, it can be said that the city center is in chaos. Most people panicked after hearing the siren. They took their belongings and ran out of the house. They just followed him into the crowd that ran around like headless chickens.

Since most of the soldiers were scattered around the city, there were less than a hundred soldiers left here, so how could they control more than 5,000 people?

But soon, a tall soldier came out and stood on a high platform. He was the man who punished all the troublemakers in the morning.

He shouted loudly, trying to get everyone to shut up, but the noise made by thousands of people was not comparable to his own voice, and he was quickly drowned out, which made him look really bad, he directly took out the pistol and fired several. Shooting!

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

The sudden sound of gunfire shocked everyone's bodies, and everyone stopped and looked towards where the shot came from.

Seeing that everyone was looking up, the tall soldier picked up a loudspeaker and shouted, "If you don't want to die, you'd better shut up, get together, and get up right away!"

Hearing the soldier's shout and absorbing the opponent's power, the crowd immediately fell silent. It only took them less than five minutes to meet immediately. Although it looked very messy, it was already pretty good.

After everything was ready, Harry walked seriously to a high platform, took the speaker from the tall soldier's hand, and said loudly, "I'm Harry, the commander of this convoy. The sirens now are what everyone thinks and I'm sorry to tell you that there are a lot of infected people on the east side of the village..."

As soon as these words came out, before he could continue, the crowd suddenly felt as if a boiling pot was about to explode. Everyone's faces were filled with fear. If there were no soldiers around, they would probably turn around and flee.

"Everyone, please listen to me!" Seeing that the situation was getting out of control, Harry shouted loudly, causing all eyes to turn to him again.

"We have blocked all the streets with buses and set up a protective zone around the city centre, but we are really short of manpower. If we want to survive, we must work together. I hope you can go to the defense zone. and cooperate with soldiers to resist the infected; otherwise, once the line of defense is broken, we will all die here!

As soon as they heard that they were going to fight the infected, the crowd suddenly fell silent. They all looked at each other in panic, wondering if they should follow the commander's order to cooperate with the defense.

At this moment, a sharp voice suddenly came from the crowd: "The infected people came from the east. Can't you ask us to evacuate from the west first? Why do they want us to take care of infected people?"

Now the crowd was rioting again. Yes, the infected obviously came from the east. We can evacuate to the west. Why should we fight so hard?

Standing on the stage, Harry coldly looked at the crowd below him, picked up the loudspeaker again, and said, "Yes, I might ask for some of you to evacuate first, but have you ever thought about the soldiers who are out there, fighting for you? Their lives matter, too, or are they not as valuable as yours?"

"If they didn't risk their lives to fight the infected and chose to flee like you, have you ever wondered what would happen to those who stay here? Among them could be your family, your friends. Who do you think is going to protect them then?"

Suddenly, the crowd fell silent again. When they heard the appearance of a large number of infected, they were all so frightened that they couldn't even think of resisting. They only thought about whether they could escape.

But when they heard Harry talk about his family and friends, the minds of all the men suddenly cleared. You should know that many of the people in this caravan were starting families, how could they be willing to leave everyone behind and escape alone?

"Then give the order, and we will cooperate in the defense!"

After a period of infighting, someone finally answered first and raised his pistol high.

Soon all present drew their only pistol from their arms and held it aloft, expressing their willingness to cooperate in the defense.

As the saying goes, there is strength in numbers. Maybe when there are only one or two people, these people are still afraid of the infected, but once they get together, the fear in their hearts gradually decreases, and they become eager to try.

Seeing this situation, Harry smiled in relief, said a few words to the tall soldiers next to him, and then led a dozen soldiers to run east. They had already wasted too much time here, and I didn't know what the situation was like there now.

After receiving the order from his commander, the tall soldier waved his hand towards the soldiers below. Then, dozens of soldiers began to quickly sort through the crowd. Due to the urgency of time, there was no time to count the number of people, so they could only divide the crowd into three unequally, the rest went to the south and north.

As for the remaining women and children, they were gathered in a dozen surrounding houses. There were nearly fifty soldiers stationed outside, fearing that something unexpected would happen here.

Just as Harry loudly persuaded everyone to cooperate in defense, on the dark road, an avalanche of infected people had already rushed towards the city.

They ran all the way to the city center, as if they had smelled the breath of life in the air, and their red eyes were glowing with excitement!
