Chapter 45 - Rollover

It didn't matter how brutal the fighting around the city, or how many infected and stalkers emerged from the dark alleys, or what those who hid to avoid combat and hoped to take advantage of the chaos did. None of this was known to the refugees in the center of the village.

At this time, women, children and the elderly were taking refuge in the houses in the center of the village. Some huddled in a corner with their relatives, praying silently with their hands folded. Others stood in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the light from the fires on the outskirts of the city and listening to the echo of gunfire and explosions. Their faces showed hesitation and concern. Some had already loaded their belongings into backpacks, ready to flee if the situation worsened.

"Ahh, what a miserable life!" exclaimed Brian as he noticed the dejected look of the people in front of him. He leaned against the window and rubbed his temples, feeling the headache begin to take hold of him.

He also expressed how baffled he was by the current situation. He had only left Dallas for a day, and had already faced a series of car accidents that blocked the road in the morning, only to run into a large number of infected people at night. "Who can tell me what's going on outside?" he thought. "When did the world become so dangerous?"

Sarah stood next to Brian, her face filled with inconceivable weariness. She was in a state of complete confusion after the alarm woke her up.

He shook his head, took out the kettle, and took a sip of water. He looked at the sights and sounds outside the window and asked with some concern, "Those infected people shouldn't come in."

Brian raised his hand and looked at the time. It was already 2:50 and almost two hours had passed since the attack of the infected. Feeling a little relieved, Brian patted Sarah's little hand and said, "Don't worry, everything will be fine."

At that moment, the soldiers patrolling the streets suddenly mobilized, as if they had received some important news. Two of them raised their weapons, pointing firmly towards the end of the street, while the other two rushed to place horizontal rails in the middle of the road, as if trying to block the passage of something imminent.

The situation outside naturally attracted the attention of everyone in the house. They hurried to the door and window, and the hesitation on their faces gradually turned into fear. Obviously these people thought that the infected had broken through the line of defense and the final resistance would occur.

But someone soon realized that something was wrong, because there was no trace of panic on the faces of these soldiers, and the roadblock only blocked a section of the road, not all of it, that obviously couldn't be used to defend against the infected.

"Didi——!"

Just when everyone was full of doubts, suddenly a light came on at the end of the street, and a military truck covered with a tarpaulin pulled into the road, as if afraid that others would not find them, honked like a madman.

Seeing the truck approaching at full speed, the two soldiers who were moving the barriers quickly gave up what they were doing. They took cover on the sides of the street and, with steady hands, pointed their rifles directly at the oncoming vehicle.

The people in the truck appeared to have noticed the roadblocks and soldiers in front. They saw a tall, thin man leaning out of the passenger window. He had a rifle in his hand. He pointed his cannon at the soldiers in front and fired. His face was filled with madness, not afraid that the opponent's bullet would hit him.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

Seeing that the other party took the initiative to shoot at them, the soldiers certainly didn't stand still waiting for death. They also pulled the trigger and chose to counterattack. However, the truck was driving with high beams and the dazzling light shone on their faces, making it impossible for them to accurately aim at the tall, thin man peeking out.

They could only squint and randomly fire at the bus, hoping that a bullet would kill the guy.

On the other hand, the tall and thin man was not afraid of the bullets passing by him. Even if the bullets grazed his body and left burn marks, he didn't say a word, he became more and more courageous as he went. The rifle in his hand was accurate. He shot two soldiers who were hiding behind the bunker to change their magazines.

The remaining two soldiers seemed intimidated by the opponent's momentum. They hid behind the bunker and stopped firing.

"Hahaha--!"

Seeing these soldiers, who seemed to get scared, Charlie and Joseph in the truck laughed wildly. At the same time, they shouted to everyone hiding in the house: "You guys, go to hell, we have to go first... Yoho——!"

Just as they were venting their inner ecstasy, the truck rushed toward the roadblock that the soldiers had just set up.

Needless to say, this type of makeshift barricade could not withstand the violent impact of the truck and was immediately knocked down on contact.

Brian, who was inside the house, saw the bus go through the roadblock and showed no intention of slowing down. The corners of his mouth curled slightly, knowing that the two of them were already finished.

Because you just noticed that a soldier dropped something similar to triangular nails not far from the roadblock. They were laughing so arrogantly at this time and didn't realize it.

The obstacle was easily knocked down, which was obviously within Chad's expectations. He began to howl like a ghost, completely unaware of the dim lights appearing in the snow in front of him.

Chad, distracted at the wheel, didn't notice what Joseph, sitting in the passenger seat, had already detected. Joseph, rubbing his eyes to clear his vision, noticed a row of triangular tire puncture devices right in front of them. His face changed suddenly, and the emotion that the situation had caused him vanished in an instant. What started as nervous laughter soon turned into a scream of terror.

"Stop!"

Chad, who was in the driver's seat, was obviously shocked by the voice and his body suddenly trembled, but when he heard the word "Stop", he subconsciously hit the brakes.

But it was too late. The truck was traveling at high speed. It could not stop immediately with a single brake. With the sound of tires brushing the ground, the truck continued to move according to its inertia and ran over the sharp nails.

The sharp nail penetrated the tire and an "explosion" sound was heard. The tire on the front left of the truck shrank quickly like a deflated rubber ball. In addition, the brakes were pressed hard and Chad was unable to control the steering wheel, the entire truck immediately slid to the side.

"Metallic sound!"

The out-of-control truck swung forward and ran toward the house where Brian was located, causing everyone by the window to scream and flee.

But in the midst of the truck's frantic race, the vehicle leaned too far, instantly losing its balance and rolling heavily into the street outside the house.

Food and ammunition in the rear compartment also tipped over with the truck, breaking the rubber shackles and falling to the ground. Yellow bullets instantly covered the snow-covered streets, looking so dazzling.

At the same time, soldiers from other streets also rushed out of the front and rear intersections of the street. Everyone heard the noise coming from here and hurried over, blocking the front and back of the street in an instant. There is no escape.

Bursts of black smoke rose from the front hood, and a large hand and rifle protruded from the passenger compartment. Joseph got out of the truck with his face covered in blood.

He looked around and saw more and more soldiers coming after hearing the news. He understood that he had no way to escape, and his eyes were filled with resentment and reluctance.

Suddenly, he accidentally glimpsed a dozen grenades on the ground, coming out of the truck along with the bullets, and then looked at the women and children hiding in the room next to him as if he saw a ray of life. An expression of ferocity gradually appeared on his face.

Ignoring Chad, who was still stuck in the driver's seat and struggling, calling for help, he half-rolled out of the truck, then leaned over and grabbed some grenades from the ground.

A young soldier coming here saw Joseph picking up a grenade. Without saying a word, he raised his rifle and shot him.

But the moment Joseph was able to pick up the grenade, he lunged to the side and hid on the side of the truck. He then used the truck as cover and ran to the house closest to him.

The bullets traveled all the way, not only missing Joseph, but nearly hitting the remaining grenades, causing the other soldiers to break out in a cold sweat and quickly preventing the soldier from continuing to fire.

Although the probability of firing the grenade with bullets is actually not high, the small probability does not mean that it is impossible. You should know that there are a lot of ammunition and supplies there, if they are all destroyed, it will be a big loss.

While everyone's attention was focused on Joseph escaping, Chad, who was still struggling in the cab of the truck, also released his left foot.

Feeling the stabbing pain coming from there, cold sweat couldn't help but slide down his forehead, but after hearing the gunshots from outside, he knew that he couldn't stay here and had to leave quickly.

Chad didn't mind the injury and hit the handbrake with his left foot. He endured the pain and stepped on the side of the backrest with his right foot. He grabbed onto the sides of the window with both hands and climbed up with difficulty, cursing in his heart at the same time, Joseph actually left him and ran away by himself.

But just as he was sitting at the door of the truck panting and planning to jump out of the car without stopping, he looked around subconsciously, and his expression instantly froze on his face, and his hand movements stopped immediately, he raised his hands and lowered his head reluctantly.

Surrounding the overturned truck, a dozen soldiers were seen holding their rifles high, pointing their black cannons at it, staring coldly at the man who stole the supply truck...
