Chapter 8 - Fade

Yarman couldn't wait to take the letter Brian handed him, and lowered his head to read the contents:

  dad:

I don't know if you can read this letter, there is a mess outside now, there are constant gunshots and explosions, and all the news reports that infected patients are rioting in the city, all of this makes me feel very disturbed.

But luckily I don't live in the city, I decided to take Angelina to Dallas to find her father, if you see this letter, please come to Dallas to find me as soon as possible, looking forward to seeing you again.

  Your daughter, June.

Seeing the above, and knowing where his daughter was going, Yarman let out a sigh of relief and felt much more relaxed. He put the letter into his backpack and said to the two children in front of him: "Now Austin has already fallen. When I arrived, the infected people over the bridge were moving here. It will soon be unsafe here. I plan to go to Dallas, do you want to come together?"

At this invitation, Brian was silent for a moment. He looked at Sarah, who was also silent on the bed, hesitated for a moment, then shook his head and said, "I'm sorry, Sarah's father and uncle have not been found yet, we need to find them!"

  "Yuck!"

As for this answer, Yarman was obviously expected, he just sighed lightly and said nothing, took out a pen from his arms and wrote an address on a piece of paper beside him, in Brian's hands.

"This is where I'm going, if... I mean if, you can't find them. Come and meet me here."

After saying that, Yarman did not stop here either, he picked up the shotgun beside him, rubbed Sarah's little head again, said goodbye, and then turned around and walked down the stairs to leave here.

  Ding Ding Ding...

Hearing the footsteps coming down the stairs, Brian stared at the note in his hand and said softly,

  "Thank you."

After Yarman left, Brian also had his own plans for today's plan. Sarah's legs were still in the recovery period and could not do vigorous exercise, making it impossible for her to stray too far from this area.

Brian took out two cans from his backpack and ate breakfast. He thought for a moment and came up with a way. Since he can't go out to find someone, he can let Joel and the others come to him!

Near the house there is a dense forest, where he collected a lot of dry firewood, stacked it and lit it with a lighter.

The fire was burning dry wood, and thick darkness hung in the air, which was particularly dazzling when viewed from a distance.

Looking at his masterpiece, Brian nodded in satisfaction, after doing all this, he did not sit idly by and began to search for all the supplies available in the house.

Putting all the available supplies on the living room table, he took Sarah downstairs and gave her a pen and paper to count things and quantities.

Brian then walked to the utility room outside. When he found the kerosene lamp last night, he saw the toolbox and the pile of wooden boards inside.

He recalled that Yarman said that the group of infected people on the bridge was moving in that direction and he didn't know when Joel and Tommy would arrive, so it was best to seal the windows and strengthen the house.

  ...

On the other side, the kilometer-long highway bridge.

The situation of last night's battle was extremely tragic, hundreds of corpses were piled up on the bridge, the entire bridge was stained with blood, and there was a strong smell of blood.

The quarantine checkpoint has been empty for a long time. Obviously, the army soldiers could not withstand the rush of infected people and chose to evacuate.

On a high slope not far away, through the telescope, Joel saw hundreds of infected people continuing to advance across the bridge, and it seemed they were heading toward the next town.

But he was not in the mood to pay attention to these things at this moment, he kept moving the telescope to scan the area near the bridge, feeling extremely anxious and exhausted.

After he and Tommy got rid of the infected people last night, they headed towards the bridge, but around the corner they heard loud gunshots and explosions, and from a distance they saw a large number of infected people.

Although he knew it was dangerous, he discussed it with Tommy and felt that if Brian saw the situation here, he would definitely choose not to continue approaching, but would find a nearby place to hide.

So, focusing on the checkpoint, they followed the bridge around the bridge in search of the footprints of the two children.

But the sound of the explosion coming from the direction of the bridge attracted the attention of all the infected people around, several times they were almost discovered by the infected people, and even almost hit by the bullets swept by the soldiers.

But they had no choice but to evacuate temporarily. They did not choose to search until the troops at the checkpoint withdrew. Now they have been searching for almost a night.

"Damn it, where did you all go!"

At that moment, Joel heard the sound of walking behind him, turned his head and found that it was his younger brother, Tommy, carrying a man in a coma.

"Aren't you looking around, who is it?"

  "Wait."

Tommy first spoke up to stop his brother from continuing to talk, then put the man on his shoulders on the ground, took out a rope from his waist and tied the man's hands behind him, then took out a document from his pocket, looking at it, he said: "I accidentally noticed him when I was searching there. He escaped from the checkpoint. He was a civilian. He should be a person who didn't have time to evacuate last night. We searched for so long and couldn't. Brian and the others might have been found by these bastards."

Hearing what his brother said, Joel also thought it was very possible, picked up the kettle beside him and took a sip, and then sprayed it on the man's face with a "pop".

After being sprayed with water, the man woke up instantly, opened his eyes suddenly, saw two strange men standing in front of him, felt that his hands were tied, and said in horror: "You. Who are you and why did you arrest me?"

Seeing that the man was awake, Joel pulled out his gun, crouched down and looked straight into the man's eyes, and said, "Last night, you caught two children, a boy and a girl, both 13 years old, the girl suffered a pain in her right leg. Wounded, you better be honest with my answer, or the bullet in my gun will burn a hole in your body."

Looking at the gun barrel pointed at his head, the man's eyes were filled with fear, he couldn't hear what the other party was saying, trembling all over, begging for mercy: "I... I don't know anything, I'm just a recorder, please... ah!"

But before he could finish speaking, Joel, who had no intention of listening to his nonsense, stood up and stepped on the other's knee.

Ever since the soldier shot them last night, he has been extremely disgusted with these damn guys. If it weren't for these people, he and his daughter wouldn't have been separated, so he naturally showed no mercy to the men.

Bending down again, looking at the man's face flushed with pain, Joel pulled out a photo of himself and his daughter Sarah, held it in front of the man and said, "I'm going to ask you one last time, have you seen this girl?"

The man is now completely honest, he endured the pain of his knee and said in pain: "I... I really haven't seen it, I was recording data last night, I really don't know."

But then the man seemed to have remembered something important, and he quickly continued:

"No... but we searched and rescued dozens of surviving citizens near the bridge last night before the infected attacked us, and we escorted them to the Houston quarantine camp as required, and the people you're looking for should be there."

"Nonsense!" The man's response hit Joel's sore spot, he grabbed him by the collar and roared, "If you're really looking for survivors, why did you shoot at us last night?"

"What... what?" Joel's question obviously surprised the man, he saw him say in disbelief: "Impossible, the task we received is obviously to search and rescue the survivors and escort them to the isolation camp for centralized management."

Hearing this, Joel and Tommy were stunned, at first they thought that the military's order was to eliminate all survivors and infected people, but now it seems that things are different than they imagined.

They looked at each other and suddenly a terrible conjecture came to mind: they seemed to have accidentally broken a terrible conspiracy.

The man obviously figured out the key as well. He kept struggling and twisting his body and said to Joel: "You must let me go, and this matter must be reported immediately, otherwise more innocent people will die!"

"Shut up." Joel only felt that his mind was in chaos, he stood up and pulled Tommy aside and asked the other party what they thought.

What are we going to do with him now?

"Let him go!" And Tommy's response was extremely direct, he could see that what the man said should be true.

"Joel, this matter has nothing to do with me. My main goal now is to find Sarah. As for this matter, let this person have a headache."

  "it's good."

Joel lowered his head and pondered Tommy's proposal for a moment and nodded. He turned around and threw a dagger in front of the man and said, "I won't kill you, you can find a way to leave on your own." . . "

After talking, they turned around and headed towards the town with Tommy, which is more than 200 kilometers from Houston, they had to find a car.

But just ten minutes after they turned around and left, not far from where they were now, black smoke slowly rose from the forest.
