King Romanus's chambers filled with the war council's murmurs. Generals, advisors, and nobles gathered around the strategy map, the air thick with tension.
"Four months," Romanus declared, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "We'll launch our attack on Emberhaven then. Prepare our armies."
General Nikos spoke up, his expression grave. "Your Majesty, a direct assault won't ensure victory. Emberhaven's defenses are formidable. We risk heavy losses."
Advisor Shedrach nodded in agreement. "We should consider diplomacy. Perhaps Nahar's presence can be leveraged for a peaceful resolution."
Romanus scowled. "Diplomacy failed us before. Nahar's betrayal will not be forgiven."
Lord Mesh, a seasoned general, leaned forward. "What of Emberhaven's allies? Have we considered the potential backlash from Emberhaven and other neighboring kingdoms? Also, remember Henry and Solomon are not the only sons of their father. We do not want to feel the wrath of David and Daniel, not to mention, Israel and Emmanuel. They do not take the twins for a joke."
Nikos unfolded a parchment, revealing a detailed diagram of Emberhaven's layout. "Infiltration is our best option. We'll sneak operatives into Emberhaven, gathering intel and sowing discord. When our armies arrive, they'll open gates from within."
The council exchanged skeptical glances.
"Risky," one advisor said. "What guarantees success?"
Nikos smiled. "I've identified a potential asset within Emberhaven. A disgruntled nobleman, eager for power."
Romanus's interest piqued. "Tell me more."
Nikos leaned forward. "General Thorn. He's been secretly meeting with Persian sympathizers. With proper persuasion, he'll aid our cause."
Advisor Reina frowned. "Can we trust this General Thorn you speak of? What's to stop him from betraying us?"
Nikos's expression turned cold. "I've... ensured his loyalty. He'll cooperate."
The council deliberated, weighing risks and benefits. Romanus paced the room, his mind racing.
After what felt like an eternity, Romanus stopped pacing. "Proceed with infiltration plans, General Nikos. We'll support your operation."
Nikos bowed. "I'll ensure Emberhaven falls from within."
Lord Mesh spoke up, "What of our armies? How will they be prepared for the attack?"
Nikos nodded. "Our forces will train in secret, utilizing the latest tactics and strategies. We'll also establish a network of spies and scouts to gather intelligence on Emberhaven's defenses."
Romanus nodded. "See it done. We'll reconvene in three months to assess our progress."
As the council dispersed, Nikos's mind whirled with strategy and deception.
In the shadows, General Thorn received a cryptic message:
"Meet me at the old windmill on the outskirts. Come alone."
General Thorn's eyes widened as he read the signed message: General Nikos.
The wheels of betrayal were set in motion.
