Chapter 24 - The trivia showdown

The day of the inter-school event arrived with an air of excitement. Students from different schools flooded the campus, their voices filled with enthusiasm. Banners hung from the walls, and the courtyard was alive with energy as everyone geared up for the competitions.

Akane and Zenkichi were in their element, their focus now on the upcoming trivia competition. They had spent the past few days reviewing trivia questions together, trading knowledge and playful jabs. Zenkichi had even found a few obscure facts about anime that he knew would give them an edge. Akane had focused on general knowledge, hoping to catch Zenkichi off guard when the questions got too serious.

The competition was being held in the school auditorium, and the atmosphere inside was electric. Teams from other schools filled the rows of seats, and the stage was set for the showdown. Akane and Zenkichi walked in, taking their seats among their classmates, both feeling the weight of the competition, though they masked their nerves with casual banter.

"You ready to lose?" Zenkichi teased, leaning over to Akane as the host started introducing the rules.

"Not a chance. I hope you've brushed up on your history," Akane replied, her eyes glinting with confidence.

Zenkichi chuckled. "Don't worry, I've got this in the bag. You just focus on not getting every question wrong."

As the competition began, the first few rounds were relatively easy. The questions were basic: popular culture, science facts, and geography. Akane and Zenkichi were breezing through them, answering correctly with ease. But as the rounds progressed, the questions became trickier. One by one, teams were eliminated, their hopes dashed as they struggled to keep up.

The competition was down to the final round, and Akane and Zenkichi were neck and neck with a team from a rival school. The final question flashed on the screen, and the entire room went silent in anticipation.

"What year did the first human land on the moon?"

Akane's heart raced. This was a question she knew, but would Zenkichi remember it in time? She looked at him, and he was already scribbling down the answer on his notepad.

"1969," Zenkichi said with confidence, before raising his hand to buzz in.

"Correct!" the host exclaimed. The crowd erupted into cheers.

Akane couldn't help but laugh. "See? I told you we'd win."

Zenkichi shot her a smirk. "Yeah, yeah. But I still carried us to victory."

The rival team, clearly disappointed, congratulated them as the host handed over the winning prize—a trophy for their school. Akane and Zenkichi stood on the stage, the spotlight shining down on them, a sense of accomplishment in the air.

After the event, Akane and Zenkichi walked out of the auditorium, the trophy in hand. Their teammates were congratulating them, but Akane turned to Zenkichi, her expression softening.

"You were amazing out there," she said sincerely.

Zenkichi shrugged, a grin spreading across his face. "It was nothing. We made a great team, though."

Akane nodded, the words hanging in the air between them. "I'm glad we did this together. Thanks for being my partner."

"Anytime," Zenkichi replied, his voice unexpectedly serious. "You're not so bad, Akane. Maybe I'll even let you win next time."

Akane rolled her eyes but smiled. "You wish. I'm the one who carried you in this partnership."

They both laughed, and as they walked back toward their friends, the tension between them felt lighter, more comfortable. The competition had given them a new sense of camaraderie, and for the first time in a long while, Akane felt as if they were on the same page. The rest of the day passed in a blur of celebrations and good-natured teasing, but Akane couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between them.

Maybe it was the thrill of victory or the simple pleasure of being understood, but whatever it was, Akane couldn't help but think that, in that moment, everything felt just a little bit different.

As the day wound down and the students began to leave, Akane and Zenkichi lingered at the gates, the sun setting behind them. The cool evening air wrapped around them like a quiet promise.

"Well," Zenkichi said after a moment, breaking the silence, "I guess this is where I say, 'Same time next year?'"

Akane smirked. "You're on. But next time, I'll carry you even more."

Zenkichi raised an eyebrow. "We'll see about that."

As they walked off into the night together, Akane realized that, win or lose, the journey they were on—one of teasing, teamwork, and unexpected moments—was just beginning.
