Chapter 27 - The snowfall surprise

The winter holidays were winding down, and as the days passed, the quiet, cold air of the season had begun to settle deep into Akane's bones. The school had already taken its break, but the campus still had that wintery feel to it, as though the snow was hiding something just beneath the surface.

Akane was enjoying her last few days of freedom, taking walks around the campus, catching up on personal projects, and just being in the moment. The break had been exactly what she needed—time to rest, to recharge, and, most importantly, time to spend with Zenkichi. Though they had been through their fair share of awkwardness and miscommunication in the past, something had shifted between them over the holidays. They were more at ease with each other now, able to share moments without the weight of expectations.

It was a particularly cold afternoon when Akane found herself meeting Zenkichi outside. They had planned to go for a walk together, enjoying the crisp winter air. Akane bundled herself up in a thick coat, scarf, and gloves, stepping out onto the familiar campus grounds. The snow had started to fall again, light flurries drifting down like powdered sugar, dusting the trees and walkways in a delicate layer.

She spotted Zenkichi waiting for her by one of the large oak trees near the fountain. He was leaning against the tree, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, and the mist of his breath hung in the cold air. As soon as he saw Akane, he gave her a small wave, his smile easy and relaxed.

"Ready for the cold?" Zenkichi asked as she approached, his tone teasing but kind.

Akane grinned. "You bet. You're the one who said you'd go on a walk, remember?"

Zenkichi chuckled, shrugging his shoulders. "Hey, I never said I was smart. Besides, it's nice out—at least, that's what I keep telling myself."

Akane rolled her eyes. "Let's go then. The sooner we start walking, the sooner we can warm up."

Together, they strolled through the snow-covered campus, their footsteps crunching in the quiet. The campus, usually filled with students and activity, felt empty today—just them and the occasional other straggler making their way home or to one of the campus buildings. Akane felt a sense of peace in this stillness, a rare moment when she could just enjoy the quiet of winter with no rush, no deadlines, and no worries.

As they walked, the conversation drifted from topic to topic—school, plans for the coming year, the new winter break movies they had both watched, and, eventually, to more personal matters.

"So," Zenkichi began, his voice a little more serious than usual. "How's everything been? You seem… different. In a good way, I mean. You've been really calm this break."

Akane looked over at him, surprised by his observation. "I guess I have been. I think I needed the break more than I realized. Sometimes it's hard to just slow down, you know?"

Zenkichi nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I get that. We're always in such a rush to do something, but there's something nice about taking it easy for once."

Akane smiled, appreciating his understanding. "I think that's why I've been hanging out with you more. You kind of make everything feel a little less… complicated."

Zenkichi smirked, clearly enjoying the compliment. "I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or an insult. But I'll take it."

They laughed, the sound of their voices mixing with the light wind and the soft snow falling around them. The world felt small in moments like this—just them, the snow, and the warmth that only close friends could bring.

As they neared the center of campus, they paused for a moment, watching the snowflakes dance in the air. It was as if the world was suspended in time, waiting for something.

"Well, I'm glad we're able to do this," Akane said quietly, her gaze lingering on the falling snow. "It's nice to have these moments."

Zenkichi glanced at her, his expression thoughtful. "Yeah, me too. You know, I've been thinking…"

Akane turned toward him, raising an eyebrow. "What's on your mind?"

Zenkichi hesitated for a moment, and then, with a half-smile, he said, "Maybe it's not just about taking it easy or slowing down. Maybe it's about who you spend your time with. The people who make the quiet moments worth it."

Akane felt her heart skip a beat at his words. She wasn't sure if he was trying to say something more, but the sincerity in his voice made her pause. There was something in the air between them, something unspoken but understood.

She gave him a soft smile, her voice barely above a whisper. "I think I get what you mean."

Just as she spoke, a loud, sudden crack broke through the silence—followed by a light-hearted scream. Both of them turned around to find a small group of students laughing and pointing at a student who had slipped on the ice near the fountain.

Zenkichi raised an eyebrow. "Guess we're not the only ones out here trying to make winter fun."

Akane laughed too, the tension of the moment melting away. "Looks like they're a little less graceful than we are."

As the two of them continued their walk, enjoying the peaceful silence of the campus and each other's company, Akane realized how much she had come to appreciate these quiet moments with Zenkichi. Winter had a way of making everything seem still, but in that stillness, she had found a kind of warmth that she hadn't expected.

The world outside may have been cold, but with friends like Zenkichi by her side, it was hard to feel anything but warmth.
