Chapter 1 - chapter 1

Charlotte jerked awake to her mother shaking her furiously.

"Char we need to go." her mother urged.

"what?? Go where?" Charlotte mumbled groggily.

"Somewhere safe." came her mother's reply as she shoved stuff inside a backpack.

"What do you mean?? Isn't it safe here??" Charlotte questioned.

Her mother was about to reply when screams erupted outside. Her mother shoved some food and water into the bag and handed it to Charlotte. Then she picked Charlotte up and ran out of the house.

"Mo... " Charlotte was about to exclaim but her words were caught in her throat as the scene outside came into view. CARNAGE. It was absolutely chaos as demons all around them were being ruthlessly slaughtered while they fled. Their screams filling the air making it hard for Charlotte to breath as she hung from her mother's arms. The sky seemed to be glowing brightly making it seem like the sun had decided to visit their city. It took Charlotte a few moments to understand that the glow came from flames that were burning her fellow demons alive in their homes. Then came the smell. OH the smell. Charlotte felt sick to the stomach from the smell of her friends and family's burning flesh reaching her nostrils.

Suddenly she was no longer in her mothers arms. Her back hit the street as he clung onto the backpack for dear life. When she looked up she saw her mother's body gruesomely torn in half along with three others. Then she saw him.

The man who was slashing mercilessly through piles and piles of bodies . She was terrified out of her wits but fortunately he had not noticed her yet. She huddled behind a nearby body . After what seemed like hours the noises died down.

Charlotte somehow managed to move her body back a few feet into a small hidden hole in the wall just as a bunch of soldiers came marching her way. She watched in horror as they stabbed each and every single body. Finally they left and Charlotte let out a breath she didn't know she was holding.

Her body shook violently and she knew that she had to move and go somewhere else. It was only after dusk fell that she managed to gather her nerves enough to leave her hidy hole.

She got to the city gates without anyone noticing. Her tiny frame and dark skin hiding her well under the dark cloudy sky. Then she ran into a bit of a problem. There were guards all around the city's only entrance and the area was well lit and cleared of all debris. She tried to think of alternatives for her perdicament but nothing came to mind.

Then a rustling sound reached her ears as she spotted a small group of demons on the other side of the clearing. It was two adults and it looked like eight children that looked her age. Just as she was about to move towards the group one of the boys tripped on something and fell directly into the light. That caught the attention of the guards and like a swarm of carnivorous faries they pounced on the group and Charlotte saw an opening in the gate's defences. Her body moved on it's own and she found herself outside the gate just a few seconds later.
