The dark corridors of the Abyss twisted and turned, almost alive in their architecture. Each step Zhi Xian and his companions took echoed faintly, swallowed by the oppressive silence. Though the Warden was defeated and the Abyssal Essence now coursed through Zhi Xian's veins, the Abyss itself felt no less dangerous.
The air buzzed with an unseen energy that prickled against their skin, and whispers—soft, incomprehensible—drifted through the darkness. Mei Lian's sharp eyes scanned the surroundings, her hand resting lightly on her whip. Yue Lan stayed close to Zhi Xian, her expression a mix of worry and curiosity.
"You're different," Yue Lan said quietly, her voice breaking the silence.
Zhi Xian glanced at her, his golden eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. "How so?"
"Your aura," she replied. "It feels… heavier. Like you're carrying something much larger than before."
Zhi Xian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he raised a hand, flexing his fingers as dark tendrils of Abyssal energy flickered across his skin. The power within him was both exhilarating and unsettling.
"The Abyss changes everyone who touches it," Mei Lian said, her tone unreadable. "Some are consumed by it. Others wield it. The question is: which are you, Zhi Xian?"
He met her gaze, his expression calm. "I'll wield it. It won't consume me."
Wei Ling snorted from the back. "Bold claim. Let's hope you can keep it."

The Abyssal Gates
As they ventured deeper, they reached a massive chamber, its center dominated by a set of towering black gates. Strange symbols carved into the gates pulsed with an eerie light, and the air around them was thick with power.
"This must be the exit," Wei Ling said, stepping closer.
"No," Mei Lian corrected, her voice tense. "It's something else. Look at the runes. These gates aren't meant to keep us out—they're meant to keep something in."
Yue Lan shuddered. "What could the Abyss need to imprison?"
Before anyone could answer, the ground trembled, and a deep, guttural roar echoed from beyond the gates. The runes flared brighter, their light flickering like a warning.
"We're about to find out," Zhi Xian said, drawing his sword.
The gates began to creak open, their immense weight groaning against the strain. A wave of cold air rushed out, carrying with it a suffocating aura of dread. From the shadows beyond emerged a figure—a towering creature, its body cloaked in darkness and its eyes burning like twin suns.
The Abyssal Keeper.
"You dare trespass into my domain?" its voice boomed, shaking the very walls of the chamber.
Zhi Xian stepped forward, his sword blazing with Abyssal energy. "We didn't come here to trespass. We came to survive."
The Keeper laughed, a sound that sent chills down their spines. "Survive? You've claimed the Abyssal Essence, yet you think yourself its master? Foolish mortal."
It lunged, its massive claws aiming for Zhi Xian. He dodged swiftly, the ground shattering where the claws struck. Mei Lian's whip lashed out, wrapping around the creature's arm, but it pulled free effortlessly, sending her stumbling.
Wei Ling and Yue Lan joined the fray, their attacks coordinated but barely scratching the Keeper's armor-like hide.
"This isn't working!" Yue Lan shouted, dodging another swipe. "It's too strong!"
Zhi Xian's mind raced. The Abyssal Keeper wasn't just a mindless beast—it was an ancient entity, tied to the Abyss itself. Fighting it head-on wouldn't work.
"Distract it!" he commanded. "Keep it occupied!"
The others obeyed, their attacks relentless despite the overwhelming odds. Zhi Xian closed his eyes, focusing inward. He could feel the Abyssal Essence, a chaotic storm of power within him. If he could channel it…
The Keeper roared again, its claws slamming into the ground. A shockwave sent the group flying, and Zhi Xian opened his eyes, his golden irises now glowing with an ominous black ring.
"Enough," he said, his voice carrying a strange resonance.
The Keeper froze, its blazing eyes narrowing. "What trickery is this?"
Zhi Xian stepped forward, his sword sheathed. His aura radiated an undeniable authority, the Abyss itself responding to him. "You guard the heart of the Abyss, don't you?"
The Keeper growled but didn't attack. "I am its Keeper, bound to this realm. And you, mortal, bear its mark. What do you seek?"
"Answers," Zhi Xian said. "What is the Abyss, truly? Why does it exist?"
The Keeper chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. "The Abyss is not a place, but a force. It is the shadow to the light, the chaos to the order. Those who enter it seek power, but few understand its cost."
"And what's the cost?" Zhi Xian asked.
"Yourself," the Keeper said simply. "To wield the Abyss is to become part of it. The more you use its power, the more it consumes you. In the end, you will be no different from me."
Zhi Xian's expression didn't waver. "Then I'll find another way. I won't let the Abyss define me."
The Keeper laughed again. "Bold words. But the Abyss does not release its prey so easily. Still, you've intrigued me, mortal. I will allow you to pass—for now. But know this: the Abyss watches. It will claim you when the time comes."
The gates behind the Keeper swung open, revealing a swirling portal.
Mei Lian approached Zhi Xian, her violet eyes studying him carefully. "You handled that well. But the Keeper is right. The Abyss won't let you go so easily."
"I know," Zhi Xian said, his voice quiet but firm. "But I'll deal with it when the time comes."
Together, the group stepped through the portal, leaving the Abyss behind.

The Surface
Emerging into the light was disorienting after the oppressive darkness of the Abyss. They found themselves in a dense forest, the air fresh and alive with the sounds of nature.
Yue Lan sighed in relief. "We're out."
Wei Ling leaned against a tree, exhaustion evident on his face. "Barely."
Mei Lian, however, was focused on Zhi Xian. "You've changed," she said, her tone serious.
Zhi Xian met her gaze. "Maybe. But I'm still me."
She didn't respond, but her expression remained thoughtful.
As they rested, a rustling sound came from the underbrush. The group tensed, weapons drawn, but what emerged wasn't a threat—it was a woman, her long silver hair gleaming in the sunlight. She was clad in tattered robes, her emerald eyes wide with fear.
"Please," she said, her voice trembling. "Help me."
Zhi Xian stepped forward, his expression unreadable. "Who are you?"
"I'm… Elara," she said. "They're coming for me. Please, you must protect me."
Before anyone could ask who "they" were, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the forest. The next trial had already begun.
