Chapter 28 - Ch 28—Shadows of Betrayal

The air was heavy with tension as Zhi Xian and his group trekked deeper into the forest. Though the battle with the Crimson Order had ended hours ago, its repercussions lingered like an unwelcome shadow. Zhi Xian led the way, his sword sheathed but his senses sharp, as though anticipating the next threat.

But the danger didn't come from the forest this time.

"Elara," Yue Lan's voice broke the uneasy silence. "You've been quiet for too long. If we're risking our lives for you, you owe us the truth."

Elara, walking at the rear of the group, flinched. Her grip tightened on the glowing Starfall Amulet, its soft light flickering like a heartbeat.

"I told you," she said hesitantly. "The Crimson Order wants this amulet. It's the only reason they're after me."

Zhi Xian stopped abruptly, turning to face her. His golden eyes glinted with something sharp and unreadable. "That's part of the truth. What you're not saying is why you were alone in their territory to begin with. Or how they knew exactly where to find you today."

The group's attention turned to Elara. Even Wei Ling, usually indifferent to their companion's secrets, raised an eyebrow.

"Elara," Mei Lian said softly, her whip coiled in her hand. "We can't help you if you don't trust us."

Elara's face twisted with guilt. "I didn't have a choice," she whispered.

"Choice?" Zhi Xian pressed.

Before she could answer, a figure stepped out from the shadows ahead.

It was a man, tall and cloaked in dark robes embroidered with the emblem of the Crimson Order. His face was partially obscured, but the cruel smile on his lips was unmistakable.

"Well done, Elara," he said, his voice a venomous purr. "You've led them right to me."

---

Shock rippled through the group. Mei Lian's hand shot to her weapon, and Wei Ling moved to block Zhi Xian's flank.

"Elara," Yue Lan said, her voice trembling. "What is he talking about?"

Elara shook her head violently. "I didn't—he's lying!"

The man chuckled. "Am I? You accepted our deal, little thief. Bring us the Abyss Wielder, and we would let you live. Or did you think you could outsmart us?"

Zhi Xian's gaze turned ice-cold, his hand hovering near his sword. "Is that true, Elara?"

"No!" she cried, tears streaming down her face. "I swear, I didn't mean for this to happen! I—"

"Save it," Wei Ling snapped. "You've been lying since the beginning."

"She's not entirely lying," the man interjected. "Poor girl. She thought she could escape us by hiding among you. But she underestimated how much we know about our prey."

He stepped closer, his eyes fixed on Zhi Xian. "And you, boy. You've caused quite a stir in our plans. The Abyss Wielder wasn't part of the equation."

Zhi Xian's voice was calm but deadly. "If you're here for me, you should have brought more men."

The man smirked. "Oh, I'm not here to fight. Not yet. I only came to collect my property."

He pointed to Elara, who shrank back.

---

The group stood frozen, the weight of betrayal thick in the air.

"What do we do?" Yue Lan whispered to Zhi Xian.

Mei Lian's eyes narrowed. "We can't just hand her over, no matter what she's done."

"And risk all of us for her?" Wei Ling countered. "She brought this on herself."

Elara sank to her knees, clutching the amulet to her chest. "Please… I didn't mean for this to happen. I just wanted to protect the amulet. If they take it, they'll use it to destroy entire cities!"

Zhi Xian studied her, his expression unreadable. Finally, he turned to the man. "She's not going anywhere with you."

The man laughed. "How noble. But you misunderstand me. Whether she comes willingly or not, we'll take her. And when we do, I'll make sure you regret meddling in our affairs."

With a wave of his hand, he disappeared into the shadows.

---

The silence that followed was suffocating.

"Elara," Yue Lan said, kneeling beside her. "We need the whole truth. Now."

Elara wiped her tears, her voice trembling. "I didn't want to betray you. But they found me before I met you. They said… they said they'd kill me if I didn't help them."

Zhi Xian's voice was colder than ice. "And what else?"

Elara hesitated, then held out the amulet. "This… it's more than just a treasure. It's a key. To an ancient temple hidden deep in the mountains. The Crimson Order wants to unlock its secrets, but they can't do it without this."

Wei Ling scoffed. "And you thought leading them to us would solve your problems?"

"I didn't lead them!" Elara cried. "I swear, I tried to lose them. I thought I could protect you all by keeping quiet. But they… they're everywhere."

Zhi Xian stared at the amulet, his mind racing. A key to an ancient temple? The implications were staggering, but so were the risks.

"We can't stay here," he said finally. "If the Crimson Order wants that key, we need to make sure it doesn't fall into their hands."

Mei Lian nodded. "Agreed. But where do we go?"

"To the temple," Zhi Xian said, his voice firm. "If they want it that badly, it's worth investigating. And if we're lucky, we'll find something that gives us an advantage."

Elara looked up at him, hope flickering in her eyes. "You're… you're not abandoning me?"

Zhi Xian's gaze softened slightly. "You made mistakes. But if we're going to survive, we'll need to work together. Don't give me a reason to regret this."

---

As they resumed their journey, the tension between the group members was palpable. Yue Lan tried to lighten the mood, but even her gentle teasing fell flat.

Elara stayed close to Zhi Xian, her guilt evident in every hesitant step.

"You're not going to trust me, are you?" she asked quietly.

"Trust is earned," Zhi Xian replied. "And right now, you have a long way to go."

Despite the coldness of his words, there was no malice in his tone. Elara nodded, determination replacing her fear.

In the distance, the mountains loomed like silent sentinels, their peaks shrouded in mist. Whatever lay ahead, Zhi Xian knew it would test them all in ways they couldn't yet imagine.

Unbeknownst to them, the man from the Crimson Order watched from a distance, his smile growing wider. The temple wasn't just a target—it was a trap.
