Chapter 2: A Hero's Promise

---

Ren's heart raced as he descended the stairs of his family's small cottage, every familiar detail flooding him with a bittersweet nostalgia. The scent of fresh bread mingled with the faint smoke from the fire, and as he reached the bottom, he saw his mother bustling around the kitchen, humming a soft tune. She looked up as he entered, her face lighting up with a smile that broke through the ache in his chest.

"There you are, Ren! Just in time. Did you sleep well?" she asked, ruffling his hair the way she always had.

Ren blinked, overwhelmed by the simple warmth of her touch. After years of battle, loneliness, and betrayal, this was a peace he had thought he'd never feel again.

"Yeah, I… I slept well," he managed, his voice tight with emotion. He had longed for this — to be back in the place he called home. And now, after everything, he had a chance to protect it. A chance to change everything.

"Today's a big day," his father said as he came in from the fields, clapping a hand on Ren's shoulder. "Only a few days left until your Awakening. Bet you're excited, huh?"

Ren nodded, looking between his parents with a newfound sense of resolve. He had missed them more than he'd ever been able to express, and even now, a part of him feared that he would lose them again if he blinked too hard. But he had more than just his love for them driving him forward. He had a mission.

His past life had taught him the price of trusting blindly, and this time, he would protect his family and his kingdom by any means necessary. But first, he had to make sure his friends were safe and, if possible, reveal as little as he could about the knowledge he carried from his future. He could trust no one fully — not yet.

---

Later that day, Ren made his way toward the palace, his heart steady, his steps purposeful. Princess Elara and Princess Selene had been part of his life since before he could remember, and the bond they shared had become the foundation of his heart and soul. In his past life, they had been his light, even as they were taken from him one by one by the very nations that had turned on Arden.

This time, he vowed, no one would harm them.

He found the princesses in their favorite spot in the palace garden, just as he had countless times before. Elara sat under a blossoming cherry tree, a book in hand, her silver-blonde hair glinting in the sunlight. Selene, as usual, was trying — and failing — to sit still, her excitement bubbling over as she fidgeted and looked up every other second.

"Ren!" Selene's eyes lit up as she spotted him, waving him over with a huge grin. "Come on, what took you so long?"

Elara looked up from her book and smiled, a softer, knowing look in her eyes. "We were beginning to think you'd gotten lost."

Ren couldn't help but smile back, feeling a warmth that seemed to fill every corner of his heart. These were his friends, his closest allies, and his future… his future family, if he had his way.

"I'm here now," he said, taking a seat across from them on the grass. "Just had a lot on my mind, I guess. The Awakening Ceremony is coming up."

"You're not nervous, are you?" Selene asked, raising an eyebrow. "I think you'll get a great title. Maybe something like 'Knight' or 'Master Swordfighter!'"

Elara laughed, closing her book and looking at Ren with gentle amusement. "I have a feeling it'll be something special. You've always had something different about you, Ren."

Ren felt a pang at her words, but he smiled, letting the warmth of their presence ground him. It was strange, sitting here with them again, knowing everything that was coming, and yet not being able to share it. He couldn't risk it. They would have no reason to believe him, and if the wrong person caught wind of his intentions, the allied nations would move faster than he could counter.

"What about you two?" he asked, steering the conversation away. "What titles do you hope for?"

Selene's eyes sparkled, as they always did when she talked about her dreams. "I'm going to be a Dragon Rider! Or maybe a Beast Tamer! Something amazing and fearless!"

Elara chuckled, a soft blush tinting her cheeks. "I'd be happy as a scholar or healer… something that would help our people."

Ren felt a swell of emotion as he listened to them. The dreams they spoke of were innocent, beautiful — and in his past life, they had all been shattered. He remembered how Selene had grown into a fierce protector, and how Elara had found strength even in the darkest times. They had both been taken from him before he could save them. This time, he would ensure that the future they dreamed of was one they could live.

"Whatever titles you get, I'll make sure you're safe," Ren said, a determination in his voice that made Elara look at him curiously.

"Ren… are you okay? You sound… different," she said softly, a note of concern in her voice.

"I'm just thinking about the future," he replied, quickly softening his tone. "I'll always protect you both, no matter what."

Selene punched him lightly on the shoulder, laughing. "We know, silly. You've always said that. But hey, maybe this time, we'll be the ones protecting you!"

Ren smiled at her enthusiasm, but in his heart, he knew he would do anything to keep that promise. They couldn't know the weight he carried, the knowledge of the future that haunted him. But in his heart, he vowed that he would prevent their fates from repeating.

---

The day of the Awakening Ceremony arrived, and as Ren entered the grand hall, he felt a sense of deja vu that almost took his breath away. Everything was as he remembered it — the banners, the flowers, the solemn faces of the kingdom's nobles. And at the far end of the hall sat the king and queen, with Elara and Selene by their side, their eyes filled with hope and excitement.

Ren approached the dais, kneeling just as he had in his past life. The royal mage stepped forward, holding the crystal that would reveal his title. Ren took a steadying breath, closing his eyes, letting himself feel the weight of everything that lay ahead. This was the turning point. This was where his destiny — and the fate of his kingdom — would be set in motion.

The crystal glowed brightly, and a familiar warmth filled him. The mage gasped, stepping back as the crystal blazed with a brilliant light, so intense that the entire hall fell silent, eyes widening in awe and fear.

When the light faded, the inscription on the crystal was clear for all to see: Hero.

Gasps rippled through the hall, just as they had before, and whispers filled the air. Ren looked up at the king and queen, watching the mix of awe and fear in their eyes. He could see the same emotions in Elara and Selene's faces as they stared at him, and he met their eyes with a steady gaze. This time, he would not falter.

The king rose, his voice trembling as he announced the title for all to hear. "A Hero has been born in Arden!"

Cheers erupted, but Ren felt only a calm resolve settling over him. This time, he knew what came next. This time, he would not be taken off guard by the allied nations or their promises of "training" him for a greater good. He would play along, perhaps, for a while — but he would be ready.

As the ceremony concluded, Elara and Selene rushed over to him, their faces filled with excitement and awe.

"A Hero, Ren!" Elara whispered, eyes shining. "I knew you were meant for something incredible."

Selene grinned, though there was a hint of worry in her expression. "Looks like you're going to be even harder to keep up with now."

Ren reached out, squeezing both their hands, feeling the weight of his vow settle over him like armor.

"Don't worry," he said softly. "This time, I'll make sure everything is different. I'll protect you both — and our kingdom. No matter what."

He would protect Arden from the shadow of the allied nations. And he would make sure Elara and Selene lived in a world where they could achieve their dreams, safe from the betrayal that had once stolen everything from them.

Ren looked toward the horizon, a fire burning in his heart. This time, he was ready.
