Summary:
Luz and Marcy get antiquated with the Owl House and each other on their first night in the Boiling Isles.
(This chapter takes place immediately after the first one ends)
"Great news! You two can get started tomorrow. As for tonight, Eda needs her beauty rest." She proclaimed as she landed owlbert.
"But you still have so much to show us! We need the grand tour!!!"
"Oh my gosh this is so cottagecore! If I had my phone I'd totally post this on my tumblr."
"You have a tumblr too?????!?!?!?!"
"The one and only marcitey06, in the flesh."
"HAH!" Eda said, with a half-snort. "You two sound even dorkier than my sister! Come on, let's get you inside."
"HOOOT! Eda, I see you've brought guests with you, but in order to verify you-"
"Crikey! What is that?!" Luz shouted.
"Interesting word choice. You got a word-a-day calendar or something?" Hooty quipped as Marcy, eyes shining with excitement and jaw wide open, came charging towards him.
"My, my! What a funky…owl? maybe? Or a Northern Harrier? How does your body excrete waste? Is there a limit as to how far you can stretch? Were you always….. all this? Were you once a human that got cursed by a terrible witch and now takes the form of a hideous beast? oop no offense though."
"Oh none taken. I hear worse on the daily from that little cutie pie down there"
"Call me cutie pie again and I'll tear you right out of the door"
"Anything for you, cu-HOOO-tie" Hooty said as he bobbed his eyebrows up and down tauntingly.
"THAT DOES IT!!!! WWEEEEEHHHH"
King charges towards hooty with an animal-like veracity, leaping onto the front door of the owl house, and then proceeding to mercilessly claw at & scratch hooty's delicate face. Hooty stretches himself outwards effortlessly and shakes King off of him.
"Girls, you're both pretty. Now knock it off, you two. And Hooty, let us in."
"Fine. But a please would be nice. Manners cost nothing, you know."
"Oh my Titan, we're really doing this right now?" Eda sighed into her palms. "Now puh-lease let us in, you little drama queen."
"Gosh. Fine. Whatever. Hoot."
Hooty's mouth opened wide and the four of them stepped in.
"He's really…. Somethin isn't he?" Luz unconfidently says to Marcy.
"Oh I'll bet! Snarky little fella, too."
"Hey quit your yammering! I'm about to do a dramatic introduction."
…
"Thank you. Anyway,
Welcome
To"
Luz and Marcy looked on in anticipation.
…
"eh nevermind i'll do it in the morning."
Eda flung herself onto the couch, somehow already asleep before her face hit the fabric.
"How could anyone fall asleep at such a crucial moment?" Luz asked.
"You two lucked out, usually she's out by 9." King raises Eda's head up. "Yep, she's out cold. Unlucky that my permanent markers ran out yesterday." King's expression seems to indicate he is genuinely disappointed about this fact and not just making a joke. The little self-proclaimed monarch turned to the door, "Hooty! Do you have any markers?"
The house-demon turned to him with a gleeful smirk across his face.
"I dooooo... but you gotta come find theeeeeemmmmm" Hooty teased as he squirmed and wiggled about.
All 3 of them shuddered.
"You play a cruel game, foul beast. And the only way to win is not playing. So I'm off to bed. Luz, Marcy, your room is up the stairs, second door on the right. Sleep tight!"
King found himself a nice, cool spot on the carpet, circled around it a little bit, made a grumbly weh, and settled down
"Toodles!!!" Hooty called out, but the duo were already gone. "They'll learn to love you in time, Hooty." he muttered to himself. "They'll learn to love you in time."
Luz and Marcy took their time walking up the stairs and down the hallway to their room, taking in their new surroundings. Well, Luz was anyway. Marcy had her head buried in her journal, feverishly writing down notes and observations as fast as she could. She'd gained decent peripheral vision over the years of burying her head in her journal while walking places, so stairs weren't much of an issue. On the other hand, the door right in front of her sent her tumbling, right into her new friend. The two fell over, making a loud thud that luckily didn't wake up anyone else in the house.
"Oh drat you did it again, marcy! You are such a klutz, girl." she said in a self deprecating manner.
"Aww don't worry about it marshmallow! Wait, is it okay if i call you that? Marshmallow?"
"ummm sure!"
"Sweet!"
The two people got off the floor and entered into the… guest room? Broom closet? Whatever it was, it had a window at the back for good natural lighting, trinkets from the human realm all strung about, and a twin sized mattress with 'E+R' carved into the bed frame. Marcy immediately took note of all the human artifacts in the room, especially the globe in the corner. She wondered how Eda had such an artifact in her possession. Luz was enamored by the warm colors of the room and wondered how such a foreign place could already feel like home.
"umm hey luz?"
"Yea?"
"There's only 1 bed"
"And? Go ahead and take it; it's yours girl!"
"Are you sure? I mean the rough hardwood floor is really bad on your back and I can take it-"
"No no no no … besides, you're our guest! Please, help yourself marcy!"
…
"Marcy?"
"oh sorry! I was lookin at this cool bug I found." She scoops up the insect and presents it to Luz.
Luz gasped.
"YOU THINK BUGS ARE COOL?!?!?"
"Totally!! I love all sorts of animals! Mammal, reptile, anthropomorphic, amphibian, whatever!"
"Wait what did you say at the end there?"
Marcy's cheeks started to glow a ruby-red hue. "Ohh just you know uhh amphibians! Like frogs and toads and stuff…"
"no no not that word silly, the one before it!"
"uhhhhmhmhmhm i don't know what you're talking about"
At this point, Marcy's mind raced so much, it was completely overwhelming. 'Time to momentarily lose the ability to speak', her internal monologue commented before she curled up into a little ball.
"hey hey don't cry it's okay! who doesn't enjoy a fun talking animal friend from time to time, right? And for your information, I got kicked out of a school dance for dressing up like an otter!"
Marcy still wasn't responding, so Luz knew they had to bring out the big guns.
"hey marshmallow look at this!"
Luz flipped on their iconic purple and white hoodie, pointed to the ears on top of the hood and smirked.
"Kitty :3!!!"
"....can i touch them?"
"Go ahead!"
Marcy uncurled, reached up above Luz's head, and flicked the kitty ears sewn into the jacket back and forth a few times.
"yknow i've always wanted to get a commission of me as an otter, they're my favorite! Unfortunately, there aren't many open job positions in Gravesfield that want a kid with weak nerd arms."
Marcy backed away from Luz's face and opened her journal.
"oh well if it's really important to you, i can draw a little… I was working on a little doodle for my friend before we left. wanna see?"
Luz's eyes gleamed with a look of excitement.
"TOTALLY!!!"
Marcy opened her book and began ruffling through the pages, giving Luz a split-second glimpse into many of her notes and sketches. Among the numerous illustrations, one piques Luz's interest. They stop Marcy's mindless skimming by slamming their hand down onto the page.
"Oooh whas this one?"
"what, this little goober? Their name is Marcelle and they're what I like to call my Newtsona!"
"That. That is the coolest thing I've ever heard. Tell me everything."
"Wow, that is not the typical reaction I get. One time I tried showing it to Sasha but she said it was cringe."
"Pfffff Sasha doesn't know what they're talking about! Also who's Sasha?"
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasha returned to consciousness slowly. Colors started to form in her vision. Green. Green-haired people. Three of them. In some sort of grandiose living room. All towering over her.
"Ed! Em! She's waking up!"
"Really? Lemme see!"
"Out the way, sis!"
Amity looked down at the blonde haired girl with a face of disdain.
"Finally, I don't have to keep watching over you. This has taken up a lot of my extremely valuable time. I could've been practicing my abomination magic but instead I had to look after some stray we dragged in from outside. You know we could've left you out there to boil in the rain. You know that, right? What do you have to say for yourself?"
"Ugh my head hurts like a bitch. Do you have any capri sun?"
"some huh?"
"what now?" the twins asked.
"UGH this is getting nowhere and even after you wake up, you round eared-freak of nature still managed to find a way to waste my time. I'm gonna get my mom to come down here and you are outta here. Got it?!"
"woa woa woa just hold on a sec. What's wrong with my ears? You're the one with ears straight out of one of Marcy's geeky nerd books. Wait, where's Marcy?"
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been over an hour since Luz and Marcy arrived at the Owl House, and they were still deeply entrenched in conversation. Luz was using their phone screen to provide just enough light to see each other, but not enough to be unpleasant at this late of an hour. Marcy was lying on the bed, chest down and kicking her feet while Luz was sitting criss-cross-applesauce on their sleeping mat.
"Wow, Anne and Sasha sound like they're super important to you."
"Well I mean when you spend your whole life around the same two people, you get to know them pretty well."
"I wish I had friends back home like yours. They sound prrreeettyyy kewl."
"I mean you're super cool too! You defied societal expectations to go on an otherworldly quest and it's just getting started! How ding dang cool is that?!"
"Phhhhssssaawwww" Luz said as they waved their hand nonchalantly in an effeminate manner.
Marcy yawned an adorably soft yawn. Luz couldn't help but aww in response.
"We should probably get some sleep. Wanna be at full capacity for whatever Eda's got planned for tomorrow. Maybe like brewing potions or slaying dragons, or or, kissing frogs or something?!"
"Not sure why your mind went there but uhh.. Yeah we'll see! Good night, Luz"
"Good night, Marcy"
"Good night, new besties!" A high-pitched, muffled voice cried. From the other side of the window, Hooty's beaky features peered through, casting an ominous shadow into the room.
"howww long have you been there?"
"Not too long…"
The shadow slithered away, back into the darkness of the Boiling Isles.
…..
"Can you draw me a newtsona, Marcy?"
