Chapter 29: The Clash with the Watchers

---

The main control room of the power station felt like the eye of a storm—a still, dark space at the heart of the chaotic world outside, yet filled with a foreboding presence. Kaito stood at the threshold, gripping his weapon tightly, his eyes locked on the cluster of Watchers in the dimly lit room. Each one stood at eerie attention, their glowing eyes fixated forward, as though sensing the pulse of life approaching.

"Ready?" Kaito whispered, glancing at Ayumi and Mei. They each nodded, gripping their weapons as adrenaline surged.

A low growl rippled through the silence, one of the Watchers tilting its head as if catching their scent. It took a step forward, baring its teeth in a silent snarl. The others followed suit, their eyes flaring with intensity.

Kaito's fingers flexed around the trigger. This was it.

"Go!" he yelled, breaking the silence as he surged forward.

Ayumi darted to his left, drawing the Watchers' attention, while Mei moved to his right, her footsteps light and deliberate. They formed a triangle, covering each other's backs as the first of the infected lunged.

Kaito brought his weapon up, firing in controlled bursts. His bullets struck the Watcher closest to him, puncturing its chest and head with brutal precision. But these weren't ordinary infected. The Watcher staggered, but a split second later, it lunged again, claws slicing the air inches from his face.

Ayumi reacted in an instant, swinging her blade down in a swift arc. Her weapon connected with the Watcher's exposed neck, severing its head with a sickening crunch. The body hit the ground, and Ayumi glanced at Kaito, her face pale but resolute.

"Stay focused," she breathed, steadying her stance. "They're fast."

"No kidding," Kaito muttered, his grip tightening on his weapon as he adjusted his footing.

Just then, another Watcher barreled toward them from the shadows. Mei reacted instantly, her movement graceful and precise. She sidestepped its charge and swung her weapon upward, slicing through the infected creature's arm. The Watcher howled in rage, and Mei seized the moment to drive her blade into its chest.

Kaito swung his attention back to the other side of the room, spotting two more Watchers advancing with deadly intent. He raised his weapon, aiming for the one nearest to Ayumi.

"On your left!" he called, firing at the creature's knees.

The shots hit their mark, and the Watcher stumbled, giving Ayumi an opening. She stepped forward, her blade flashing as she finished it off with a decisive strike.

As they fought, Kaito could feel his system responding to the intensity of the battle. His vision sharpened, his reflexes heightened, and a faint warmth spread from his Pathfinder title—a subtle reminder of the responsibility he carried. With each swing, each dodge, and each breath, his movements felt more precise, more calculated. The experience points he earned coursed through him, driving him onward.

Kaito's eyes locked onto the last Watcher. This one was larger than the others, its eyes glowing with a fierce intelligence as it moved forward with a calculated gait. It was as if it understood their intent, and the thought sent a chill down his spine.

He raised his weapon, aiming for the creature's head, but before he could fire, it lunged, its speed far surpassing any of the others they had encountered. Kaito barely dodged, rolling to the side as the Watcher's claws sliced through the air inches from his face. He scrambled to his feet, his heart racing as he steadied his aim again.

Ayumi joined him, positioning herself at his side. "We'll take it together," she murmured, her gaze fierce and unyielding.

The Watcher hissed, baring its teeth as it crouched low, preparing to attack. Kaito braced himself, feeling every muscle tense as he met the creature's gaze.

"Now!" he shouted.

They moved in unison, Ayumi taking the lead with a feint to the left. The Watcher lunged after her, its focus momentarily diverted. Kaito seized the opening, dashing forward and bringing his weapon down on its exposed side.

The blade struck true, carving a deep wound along the Watcher's torso. It let out a blood-curdling screech, thrashing wildly as it tried to shake them off.

But Kaito didn't let up. He pressed forward, driving his blade deeper as Ayumi swung her own weapon from the opposite side. Together, they struck with unrelenting precision, their movements synchronized as they brought the creature down.

With a final, shuddering cry, the Watcher collapsed, its body hitting the floor with a heavy thud.

Ayumi's face softened as she wiped the sweat from her brow. "We've come a long way," she said quietly, her gaze lingering on the fallen Watcher. "This would have been impossible a month ago."

"Not anymore," Kaito replied, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "We're stronger together."

Aftermath

As they exited the power station, the survivors at the camp greeted them with a mixture of awe and relief. Daichi, who had been waiting anxiously by the gate, approached them, his expression softening when he saw they had returned safely.

"You did it," he said, his voice thick with gratitude. "I can't believe you took down that many on your own."

"We're just getting started," Kaito replied, glancing at Ayumi and Mei. "If we're going to turn the tide, we'll need more people, more supplies, and more of these victories."

Daichi nodded, his gaze thoughtful as he took in Kaito's words. "Agreed. We'll need to build on this momentum and train everyone. The infected aren't going to wait."

As they spoke, Kaito felt a faint tremor from his Pathfinder title, a subtle but constant reminder of the quest that lay before him. His mission might have been temporarily complete, but he knew the Watchers were only a small part of what was to come.

Ayumi looked at him, her expression soft yet resolute. "We'll face it together. Whatever comes next."

Kaito met her gaze, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. They were no longer just surviving; they were building something stronger. And as the darkness closed in, he knew they had the power to push back.

This was only the beginning.
