I watched in horror as kairan's body convulsed, the golden light from his markings intensifying, flickering like flames. Desperation clawed at me. My mind screamed for a solution, but all I could think of was getting to him. My feet moved of their own accord as I tried to reach him, but the invisible shield surrounding him struck me like a powerful gust of wind, sending me crashing into the corner of the room.
The impact jarred my entire body, but I barely felt the pain. All I could see was Kairan, writhing in agony, and I knew I had to try again. I scrambled to my feet, determination outweighing my fear, and hurled myself toward him. Again, the shield pushed me back, slamming me into the wall with brutal force.
