Chapter 21 - Boar Hunt

After running for a few hours, Iris came back toward us.

"I saw a boar over that way," said Iris, pointing.

Emily and Enna readied the javelins they keep on their packs and quickly stalked away in that direction. Clearly, the two of them are very competent hunters. I followed a good distance behind them, keeping quiet and staying low. Lily and Iris watched from above.

At the same time, Emily and Enna threw their javelins toward something I couldn't see from my position.

"Uh oh, that only angered it." said Emily.

"Watch out, it's a big one." said Enna.

'Big' is an understatement for what I saw emerge from behind the trees and foliage. That thing is giant. The giant boar looks angry with two javelins sticking out of it and it has massive, deadly looking, tusks. Emily and Enna started falling back as the boar prepared to charge. Then the boar saw me, and pointed its body toward me.

The giant boar started charging me much quicker than I expected. It is surprisingly quick for its size. At the last moment, I jumped up and grabbed onto a tree branch above me and lifted my body into the air, dodging the boar's charge. The giant boar slammed into the tree and then backed up.

Then, I brought my heel down on the boar's head like an axe kick. I was really trying to send it a message to back off, but I heard a distinct cracking noise, and the boar immediately collapsed.

"Wow! That was awesome!" said Lily, as everyone rushed over to me.

"I'm so sorry we put you in danger," said Emily as she checked me for injuries.

"He crushed its skull. . . with a kick?" said Enna, examining the dead boar.

"No way. . . These boars have notoriously hard heads."

"Let me see your foot." said Enna as she grabbed my foot and looked at my heel. ". . .Not so much as a bruise."

"Wow. . ."

"That's so cool," said Iris.

While Emily and Enna were investigated, Lily and Iris looked at me admiringly. I was still trying to figure out how my reflexes were so good. I would have expected myself to freeze up under pressure like that. Or, to screw up the execution of a move like that. But, in the heat of the moment, I did it right on the first try. My body just moved exactly the way I wanted.

It could be that I did the real life equivalent of rolling two natural 20's in a row, but there is no such explanation for the superhuman strength required to crush that boar's skull with a kick. Add on the impenetrable skin and amazing stamina, and I can only conclude that I must have superhuman stats, so to speak.

"Well, anyway, I'm just glad you're okay," said Emily.

"Me too," said Enna.

"Thanks." I said. "Now we have what we need, as well."

Emily and Enna got to work dressing and cleaning the boar. Since I wasn't in a position to help them, I just stood around thinking about punching a tree to test my strength. But, my every instinct is telling me that it would only hurt my hand, and then I would just look dumb.
