Chapter 1 - The Boyfriend Charade

Silas's POV

"Let's date," Kai said, mouth full of pepperoni pizza.

...

Silas's jaw dropped. "Let's date?" he repeated, his brain struggling to process what he had just heard. The pizza slice he'd been holding slipped from his grasp, landing on the coffee table with a soft thud. The air thickened, the room seemed to shrink, and for a moment, Silas couldn't even breathe. It was like someone had punched him in the gut.

"Fuck! What the-what the hell was that?!" Silas sputtered, his voice a strangled gasp. "Dude, don't scare me like that!" He exclaimed, his hand instinctively reaching for his chest as if to soothe the sudden jolt of surprise.

"Did he just say 'date'? Is he serious? Did he just eat a whole slice of pizza in one bite? Is that even possible?" Silas's mind was a whirlwind of panicked and useless thoughts.

Kai, oblivious to the seismic shift in Silas's demeanor, chuckled. "Yeah, man, why not? We'd make a great couple." He took another bite of pizza, his eyes sparkling with a mischievous glint.

"I'm serious," Kai said, his voice laced with a hint of amusement. "We have so much in common, you know? We even finish each other's..."

"Sentences?" Silas finished, trying to sound casual, but his voice trembled. "Okay, first of all, I'm pretty sure you just pulled that line out of a cheesy movie, not a real dating strategy."

Kai shrugged, his mouth still full of pizza. "Maybe I'm just a romantic at heart."

Silas wanted to laugh, but something about Kai's tone made him uneasy. "You know, a year ago, this would have been hilarious. But now, I'm not sure if I should be flattered, terrified, or call the authorities."

Kai grinned, his eyes twinkling. "Come on, Silas, we'd be a power couple. Think about it."

Silas knew this was a disaster waiting to happen. Kai was always up to something, and this time, it felt like trouble with a capital "T."

"The hell are you up to?" Silas demanded, his voice sharper than he intended.

Kai's smile faltered slightly. "Okay, okay, I'll come clean. I need you to pretend to be my boyfriend... not for everyone, just one person."

"Why do you have to put it like that?" Silas's voice was flat. 'Let's pretend to date' might have been the better word for it. You really have a way of getting people on edge." Silas wanted to smack him. Just smack him into oblivion.

Kai looked like he wanted to disappear. "I swear, if I didn't know you so well, I'd think you were intentionally trying to get me to punch you." Silas added.

And why you need me to do that? A boyfriend? What kind of shit have you got yourself into?" I asked, my mind already conjuring up images of him getting tangled up with a jealous ex, or maybe even his overprotective mother.

"Did you accidentally promise someone you were dating? Did you bet on a football game and lose? Is this some kind of elaborate prank?"

Kai sighed, his shoulders slumping. "My mom set me up with someone. If things go well, they might even agree on marriage."

"So, you're going to use me as a shield? To get out of a date by making her think you're gay?" Silas said incredulously.

"It's not a date, it's a marriage prospect," Kai corrected, his voice strained.

Kai nodded sheepishly. "Yeah, I know it's a bit drastic, but it's the only way I can think of."

"Can't you just ask someone else to do this? Or tell your mom you don't want to, I thought arranged marriages are a thing of the past." Silas suggested, his mind racing. "And why me?"

"I don't trust others, and you know it doesn't work like that," Kai answered, his voice a mix of resignation and frustration. "Besides, if she calls it off, I'm off the hook."

"If I'm seen as gay then I will be gay with you." Kai said it without an ounce of shame.

"Can you hear yourself?" Silas asked, trying to keep his voice calm, but a tremor of unease ran through him. "Have you ever thought about me not being comfortable with the idea?"

Silas hesitated, a knot forming in his stomach. "And what about my dating life? I'm not exactly known for being a wallflower either, you know."

"I know you're uncomfortable, but we're just pretending," Kai said, his voice soothing. "Maybe a little skinship, like holding hands, nothing else."

"Holding hands?" Silas scoffed. "You know, I'm not sure which is more terrifying, the thought of pretending to be your boyfriend or the thought of holding hands with you in public."

"Come on, it'll be fun! We can even practice a little. How about we try a 'romantic' walk in the park?" Kai said, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

Silas's stomach churned. "A romantic walk in the park?" he asked, his voice laced with disbelief. "I'm pretty sure the only romantic thing about that scenario is the chance of me tripping and falling into a fountain."

"Hey, I'm just trying to help you get into character!" Kai said, grinning. "Think of it as a rehearsal for our big 'performance.' We'll be the hottest couple in town!"

Silas shook his head. "I'm pretty sure the only thing hot about this situation is the amount of sweat I'm going to be breaking."

Kai laughed. "Don't worry, I'll bring a fan."

"A fan? What, are you going to try to make me look like I'm in a Victorian romance novel? I'm not going to be swooning over you, I'm going to be swooning over the nearest exit."

"Okay, okay, I get it," Kai said, raising his hands in surrender. "We'll take it slow. But just promise me you'll try to have a little fun with it."

"Fun?" Silas said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Rumors might spread," Silas said, a knot of worry tightening in his stomach. "Even if it's just in front of one girl, word gets around. You know how gossip works."

"Don't worry about it," Kai replied, waving his hand dismissively. "It's not as if we're going to kiss in front of people. We can just deny it, besides, chances are we're just going to pretend once. Don't sweat it."

"Why are you so confident I would agree?"

"I'm your best friend, you wouldn't let me marry someone I don't like. So, what do you say?" Kai asked, his eyes pleading. "And with you, people won't think as much because they know we've been friends for a long time and think it's just bromance," he added, a hint of desperation creeping into his voice.

"Will you help me out?" he muttered, looking at Silas with his sad puppy eyes.

Silas sighed. "You know, I'm starting to think you're more manipulative than my ex-girlfriend," he said, shaking his head. "But fine, I'll do it. But if this backfires, you're buying me a new apartment, a new therapist, and a lifetime supply of pizza."

Kai grinned. "Deal! You won't regret this, I promise." With a sigh of relief washing over his face, he added, "Thanks, Silas. You're the best."

Silas couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. What had he just agreed to?

"Don't get too comfortable," Silas said, pushing Kai playfully. He watched him devour the remaining pizza, a calm contentment settling over his face as if a storm had already passed. But Silas couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in his gut. It was like a shadow dancing just out of reach, leaving him with a nagging sense of unease.

"Ah, therapy it is," Silas muttered, already picturing the chaos that was about to unfold. "I definitely need a new best friend, as well."

"So, did your mom at least tell you who she is?" Silas asked, munching on his pizza. He was already picturing a parade of potential brides, each more terrifying than the last.

"Nope, I'll meet her over the weekend," Kai answered, a hint of apprehension in his voice.

Silas chuckled, shaking his head. "You give them headaches, that's why they wanted to marry you off early." He couldn't help but tease him, even though he knew Kai was secretly dreading the whole ordeal.

Kai threw a square pillow at him, his face a mix of annoyance and amusement. "Hey!

"Oh, come on, you know it's true," Silas said, laughing.

Kai sighed, throwing himself back onto the couch. "Let me sleep here tonight."

Silas looked at him suspiciously. "Why? Did you forget your keys again?"

"No, it's Jessica," he said nonchalantly. "I called it quits with her, and she's still furious. She's probably waiting for me at my front door."

"And who's Jessica? What happened to Candice, from the art department?" Silas asked.

Kai shrugged, a hint of boredom in his voice. "We broke up last month. I can't deal with her demands anymore."

Silas sighed. "Okay, whatever." He didn't want to ask further. Kai had always been like that with his relationships, nothing lasted. Either the girls got too clingy and demanding, or Kai, being himself, non-committal. He even wondered why Kai dated them if he didn't have feelings for them. They just both wasted their time.

"It's late, let's call it a night. I have morning class tomorrow, you know the drill," Silas said, tidying up soda bottles and a pizza box.

"Yeah, don't wake me up," Kai muttered while scrolling on his phone.

"He's eating my food, sleeping on my couch and asking for ridiculous favors. I might as well ask him to pay rent," Silas thought.

"Hey, you know, I've been thinking..." Silas said, "Maybe we should have a 'roommate agreement' for next time you crash here."

Kai looked up from his phone, a smirk playing on his lips. "You're serious?"

"Of course," Silas said, trying to maintain a straight face. "Rent, chores, food... you know, the usual."

Kai laughed, throwing a crumpled napkin at him. "Alright, alright, I get it. You're just jealous of my charming personality."

"Maybe," Silas said, shaking his head. "But seriously, Kai, you're a mess."

"I know, I know," he said, rolling his eyes. "But you love me anyway."

"Eww," Silas gagged, pushing him. "Where the hell did that come from? Fucking bastard."

He laughed, throwing his arm around Silas' shoulders. "Goodnight, boyfriend. Now get some sleep."

Silas rolled his eyes at him. "You're going to give me nightmares." He said in disgust then headed to his bedroom.

The next morning, Silas woke up to the smell of burnt toast and the sound of Kai's panicked voice.

"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!" Kai exclaimed, frantically trying to salvage the burnt toast. "I'm so sorry, Silas! I completely forgot about the toast!"

Silas chuckled. "It's okay, Kai. I've seen worse." He walked into the kitchen, taking in the scene of charred bread and a slightly singed toaster.

"So, what's the plan for today?" "I thought you were going to sleep in." Silas asked, trying to keep a straight face.

"Mom called, I'm meeting her today at the coffee shop downtown," Kai said, his voice a little shaky. "She's going to introduce me to the girl."

Silas's heart sank. This was it. The moment of truth.

"Good luck," Silas said, trying to sound supportive. "Just remember, you're gay. And I'm your boyfriend."

Kai grinned. "You're a lifesaver."

Silas watched Kai for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest. He couldn't believe he just agreed to his stupid idea.

"I have a class at 9," Silas said, casually.

"Great, we'll go out together. I need to drop by my apartment before meeting my mom," Kai replied.

Silas nodded, trying to swallow the lump in his throat. "Yeah, okay. Just... keep me in the loop about how the meeting goes, okay?"

Kai nodded.

He shook his head, a wave of amusement washing over him. This is going to be a wild ride.
