Silas was sitting in a chair at a quiet coffee shop outside the university campus. He had arrived a bit early for his meeting with Sarah, not wanting to keep her waiting. Glancing out the window, his mind wandered back to the serendipitous encounter that had led to this unexpected rendezvous.
Flashback
The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the courtyard, creating a dappled pattern on the worn stone benches. Silas, with his backpack slung casually over one shoulder, was rushing across the courtyard, his eyes glued to the ground. Suddenly, he collided with someone.
"Oh, sorry!" he mumbled, looking up to see Sarah standing there, her eyebrows knitted in surprise.
"No problem," she replied softly. "I wasn't really paying attention either."
They stood there for a moment, an awkward silence hanging between them. Silas cleared his throat. "Are you on your way to the library?" he asked, attempting to break the ice.
"Actually, I just came from there," Sarah said, gesturing towards the library building. "I have a meeting in a few minutes."
"Oh, right," Silas said.
"Well," Sarah began, her voice a bit hesitant. "Uhm, Silas, would you like to have coffee with me tomorrow? If you're not busy, that is…" Her cheeks flushed a delicate pink as she asked.
Silas paused for a moment. "O-okay, sure," he said with a smile. He couldn't bring himself to refuse, although he wasn't sure why. He didn't even think to ask her why she wanted to meet.
"Let's meet at the Cozy Cup, it's a coffee shop near the university," Sarah suggested.
"Yeah, I know that place," Silas answered. "Are you free at 10 o'clock?"
"Yes," Sarah beamed. "But I hope I'm not being a bother. I know this invitation is rather sudden."
"No, it's fine," Silas replied.
"Thank you," Sarah said, smiling.
She glanced at her watch. "I should probably go. See you, Silas."
"Yeah, see you," he said, watching as she turned and walked away, her long hair flowing gently in the breeze.
End Flashback
Silas gave a small smile and shook his head. He couldn't believe he had agreed to this. He wasn't sure what had compelled him to accept, but he couldn't find it in himself to say no to Sarah. He wondered if he had made a wrong decision. He also decided not to mention anything to Kai.
"Hi, did you have to wait long?" Sarah asked as she took a seat across from Silas.
"No, don't worry about it," Silas replied with a warm smile.
Their orders arrived, and they started chatting.
"Silas, I know you might be curious about why I kept inviting you," she said shyly, her eyes fixed on her coffee cup. "And I know you're aware of my situation with Kai."
Silas nodded, at a loss for words.
"I can't really explain it. We've only just met, but I feel at ease when I talk to you," she continued. "I really want to be your friend."
"Thank you. If that's how you feel, then I'm happy to be your friend," Silas said, rubbing the back of his head, a hint of shyness in his demeanor.
"Thanks," Sarah said, her smile brightening. "I hope your girlfriend won't mind you meeting me here."
Silas hesitated for a moment, his mind racing. He didn't want to lie to Sarah, but he also didn't want to reveal the truth about his relationship with Kai. "I don't have a girlfriend," he said finally, his voice soft.
Sarah's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh," she said. "I just assumed…"
"Ha ha, I'm too busy for that." Silas replied with a chuckle.
She took a sip of her coffee and smiled faintly. Her eyes lingered on Silas a moment longer than necessary, and there was a softness in her gaze that hinted at something more than just friendship.
They sat in silence for a while, sipping their coffee. Silas could sense the tension in the air, and he questioned whether he had been wrong to tell Sarah the truth. He didn't have a girlfriend in the traditional sense, but he was in a complicated situation with Kai - a pretend relationship that he couldn't bring himself to disclose to Sarah.
Finally, Sarah broke the silence. "Well, I'm glad we could meet up today," she said.
Silas smiled, relieved that the conversation had taken a more positive turn. "Me too," he said.
For the rest of the morning, they talked and laughed, enjoying each other's company. Silas found himself opening up to Sarah in a way he had never expected. She listened attentively to his stories, her eyes sparkling with interest, and he couldn't deny the growing connection between them.
The coffee date came to an end, and Silas offered to take her home.
"Thank you, but my driver is already here," Sarah said. "You might be busy too, and I don't want to be a nuisance."
As they said goodbye outside the coffee shop, Sarah looked at Silas with a warm expression. "Thank you for today, Silas," she said. "I had a really wonderful time."
Silas smiled back at her. "I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had a good time too."
They stood there for a moment, a bit of an awkward silence between them. Then Sarah reached out and gave Silas a quick hug. Her body pressed against his for a brief moment, and he could feel the warmth of her skin through his shirt. "See you around," she said.
"Yeah, see you," Silas replied. He watched as Sarah walked towards the waiting car, her driver opening the door for her. Once she was inside, the car pulled away, and Silas turned and headed back to the university.
As he walked away from the coffee shop, Silas was lost in thought about the time he had just spent with Sarah. At first, he had been hesitant and unsure of what to expect or how to act.
But now, as he replayed their conversations and shared laughter in his mind, he was genuinely glad he had agreed to meet her. She was a kind and warm person, and her presence had drawn him in despite his initial reservations.
He thought about how Kai could potentially develop feelings for Sarah if he gave it a chance, and how their relationship could evolve into something real. While part of him wanted Kai to find happiness and love, another part of him felt an odd sense of relief at the thought of Kai not being interested in Sarah. It was a jumble of emotions that he couldn't quite untangle.
Silas sighed as he walked, his steps slow and heavy.
"God, what a mess," Silas murmured to himself.
