Chapter 7 - Cramped Company

The cell was cramped with both of them in there. It was a small cell filled mainly with a bunkbed that looked like it had seen better days. The sheets on the wooden boards were thin and tattered. "Why does this keep happening? One bad thing after another…" Doric sighed as he sat on the bottom bunk. He put his head down staring at the stone for some clarity on the situation.

Nyssa looked defeated. "I am so sorry for putting you in this position, It seems like all I do is cause problems…" She was not wrong. Since coming here because of her he has seen nothing but trouble but he knew his harsh words from earlier were not going to help right now.

"Don't think too hard about it Nyssa. Let's just focus on getting out of here." He took a deep breath in and smacked his cheeks with both his hands trying to snap himself out of the depressing air he was creating. Nyssa looked shocked as red marks began to form on his face. She giggled a bit at the image.

"Thanks, Doric. I don't know how but I know we will make it through this." She sat next to him and looked up at him. "What should we do first?"

Pausing for a moment he tried to think of anything that could help them. He looked at the book and wished it could give him something that could help. "Cast Firebolt to unlock the next chapter." Not something that would really help out in this situation."

She pondered the idea for a moment. "What if you could melt the gate with a fire bolt?"

"And what, become outlaws in the first town we come by? I don't even think a fire bolt would be able to do something like that." He kept thinking harder. Looking at the bars, the walls, the bed. Anything that could give him a chance at escape but everything was coming up blank.

A guard finally arrived after hours of waiting in the Cell he slid two bowls of cabbage soup and some bread into the cells. "Meal TIme." Was all the guard said before leaving. Before he could get far Doric had a question.

"How long will we be stuck here, since we haven't done any crimes."

The guard stopped looked at them specifically Nyssa and sneered. "The amount of trouble Dark Elves cause to the people above ground is more than enough. I am certain that she has probably committed a crime or two in her lifetime that warrants jail time…" He walked away spitting to the side as he went.

Doric looked at Nyssa and shook his head. "Don't listen to him, I know you are not some villain. We just have to convince the next guard that comes by."

"I don't think that will be very easy." came a voice from across the room. Squinting through the low light in the room he could make out another figure. He thought he saw someones shadow but this one had eyes and was looking right at him. It was eerie and caused Doric to shiver.

"I get that a lot sorry for my appearance. There's no need to fear me. I am what they call Shadow Fallen. My father was human and my mother a being from the plane of darkness. Their forbidden love is what made me." She said pointing her inky black hand towards Nyssa.

"Why are you in here then?" Doric asked not quite sure he could trust this person. "What did you do?"

A pause for a moment and a quiet saddened response from her. "I was born…" Doric looked at her and a little light shone from the grate in the wall revealing her figure more. She was about his age, Her skin was ashen and her hair was a shiny black along with her large eyes. She was wearing rags and looked very thin probably from malnourishment.

He felt a saddened pluck on his heart as he imagined how long she must have been here. But that sadness quickly turned to panic. "Wait how long have you been here?"

Her large eyes looked at him with a tired expression. "For as long as I can remember. They took me as a child and I never saw my parents again. All because I scared the kids in the town. But who knows maybe I am better off here. The outside world is cruel from what the guards say."

"That's bull, being stuck in a cell your entire life is no life at all!" Tears were welling up in his eyes but he choked them back. "I am getting you out of here with us." The girl gave a weak smile and shook her head.

"Many before you have said that and none were successful. It is my burden to bear not yours. If you can find a way to escape please do so. I am content here. Punching the side of the bed he sat down on the bed again. His anger was peaking he was steaming with frustration. His mind was racing trying to think of some way they could escape. "This place deserves to burn to a crisp. It's full of garbage people who would imprison a young girl for just being born…"

Nyssa put her hand on his shoulder again trying to comfort him but had to pull it back quickly as her hand was burned slightly by touching him. "Doric…" She said worried for his safety.

"What kind of person could let her sit there day after day never to see the world fed this water and bread." His anger was seething now and his body was warming up quickly.

"Doric, your body!" Nyssa now had to back up to the wall as the heat radiating from his body was starting to burn her just being close to him.

"What the hell is going on?" Doric stood up quickly and finally felt the heat in his body. He began to panic and tried to pat off the occasional flames that would appear on his body but every time he did another one appeared. "What the hell is wrong with this world!"

"Do you really want to save that girl, Big Bro?" came a voice inside his head. It was the young girl's voice again. "All you have to do is channel that feeling and imagine what that would look like."

Doric was not sure what that meant but he could feel his body growing hotter and hotter. He was starting to feel sick and in pain as the fire was starting to hurt him now.

"If you don't channel it Big Bro the magic will consume you and use you as the cener point. It will most definitely end with you and your friend turning to ash."

"What do I do?" Doric now in full panic mode was scared he might hurt Nyssa who was already looking worse for wear as she was now sitting on the ground going in and out of consciousness from the heat. "Help me out!"

"I told you already Big Bro, listen next time." The voice seemed like she was scolding him.

"I need to manifest my intentions but what does that mean?" he looked at the shadow girl and then again at the bars. "I want them gone…" He felt his mind molding a Symbol. The Symbol for Fire connecting to it was tags left and right. Ranged, Explosive, Melting, Powerful. He began to smile as the formula for the spell was forming in his mind.

"Pull back Big Bro! Your going to kill everyone with that spell!" As if a teather was tugging on his mind he saw a few more symbols forming this one was a water one. It was combined with tags.

Wall, Shield, Steam, regeneration, Multi-targeting, Instant.

The last tag labeled itself onto the water spell that seemed to come from him but not created by him. As if overwriting his mind for a moment he felt the fire leave his body. Shooting at the bars and exploding into a heap of metal slag. at the same time, the fire spell left his body 3 large water bolts shot out towards him, Nyssa, and the shadow girl. Quicker than the fire bolt which was good because the explosion from the fire bolt hit the water as it began to cover the three in a shell of water. Steam flowed all over the room and headed up the stairs.

It was nearly impossible to see anything but Doric took this chance to grab Nyssa and head to the other girl's cell and grab her. They began booking it up the stairs and as they made their way there they could hear the shouting of the guards as they realized where the explosion came from.

Using the cover of the mist to escape the three were now moments away from the prison complex and now dead center in the market place. As they stopped to catch their breath they saw the towns people looking back at the direction they came from. Some pointing and others screaming.

Looking back Doric saw what they were screaming about. The prison tower was collapsing. As if on cue Doric felt a tiredness he had only felt once before. The day he died. He collapsed on the ground and the last thing he heard was Nyssa's voice.

"Doric, Doric, wake up!"
