Chapter 4 - Into the Shadows

The excitement of the entrance exam was still buzzing through Eclipse Academy as the news spread that eight pairs of students had qualified for the quarter-finals. Kaito and Ryker's names were among them, but the thrill of victory was quickly overshadowed by the unsettling memory of their recent battle against the mysterious students.

"Two days until the quarter-finals!" Ryker exclaimed, pumping his fist in the air. "We need to train hard!"

"Or we could investigate those two mysterious students," Kaito suggested, glancing at the forest that bordered the academy. "They might have intel on what we're up against."

"Or they might just have a secret snack stash!" Ryker said, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Imagine if they've got the best ramen in the universe!"

"Focus, Ryker," Kaito said, but he couldn't help chuckling. "We're not on a culinary expedition."

"Yet," Ryker retorted. "First, we find out what they're up to. Then, we'll see about the ramen."

With a shared sense of purpose, the two friends set off toward the dark, mysterious forest that loomed at the edge of the academy grounds. It was a place filled with ancient trees and whispering winds, rumored to hold secrets best left undisturbed. As they crept deeper into the woods, the atmosphere grew thick with tension.

"Do you think they're really grunts for Emperor Ray Darker?" Kaito asked, peering through the shadows.

"Could be," Ryker replied. "But if they're working for him, we're definitely not going to just let them walk away. We've got to confront them!"

As they moved quietly, they spotted the two mysterious students ahead, lurking in a small clearing. They were in deep conversation, clearly unaware of Kaito and Ryker's presence. The duo leaned against a tree, trying to catch snippets of their conversation.

"—the Emperor will be pleased with our progress," one of them said, a smirk spreading across his face. "Those fools at Eclipse Academy will never know what hit them."

"Right," the other replied. "And after we crush their precious quarter-finals, we'll show them true power."

Kaito felt a chill run down his spine. "They really are working for him," he whispered. "We need to go back and—"

Suddenly, a rustling sound interrupted him. Kaito turned just in time to see seven more figures emerging from the shadows, grinning menacingly. Their eyes gleamed with malice, and they seemed all too eager for a fight.

"Oh no," Ryker muttered, his bravado fading. "That's a lot of grunts."

"Yeah, I don't think they're here for ramen," Kaito said, his heart racing.

"Run?" Ryker suggested, taking a step back.

"Not an option," Kaito replied, raising his hands. "We can't back down now."

With a battle cry that was more enthusiastic than well-planned, they charged into the fray. The first grunt lunged at Ryker, but he dodged and retaliated with a burst of flames. It singed the grunt's sleeve, but the attack barely slowed him down.

Kaito unleashed a bolt of lightning, striking another grunt, but the sheer number of attackers was overwhelming. Each of the grunts attacked in unison, and before long, Kaito found himself in a whirlwind of punches and magic blasts.

"Maybe we should have run," Ryker panted as he narrowly dodged a flying fist. "This is starting to feel like a really bad idea!"

Just then, a grunt tackled Kaito to the ground, pinning him with a knee in his back. "How's it feel to be outmatched, Lightning Prince?" the grunt sneered, sending a fist crashing into Kaito's side.

Kaito gasped, the wind knocked out of him. "Not great!" he wheezed, feeling a sharp pain radiate through him.

Ryker, trying to rescue his friend, was met with a punch that sent him sprawling. "This is why we don't pick fights with shadows!" he shouted, scrambling to his feet.

"Next time, remind me of that before I charge in!" Kaito yelled, staggering up. But before they could regroup, the grunts were upon them again, hitting them from all sides. Kaito felt another strike land, and he was thrown backward, landing hard against a tree.

"Ugh, these guys are relentless!" Ryker groaned, rubbing his face where a grunt had landed a particularly nasty blow. "Who knew grunts could hit so hard?"

"Maybe we should ask them nicely to stop?" Kaito suggested, but he was cut off by another attack that sent him reeling.

With the odds stacked against them, Kaito and Ryker shared a brief look. "We need to combine our powers," Kaito said, a spark of inspiration igniting in his mind. "We can create something big enough to get us out of here!"

"Right!" Ryker agreed, his spirit lifting. "Let's show them what 'Battle Buddies' can really do!"

With a quick nod, they began to channel their energy. Kaito focused on his lightning while Ryker summoned his flames, creating a swirling vortex of electric fire. The air crackled with tension as their combined powers began to manifest.

"Ready?" Ryker shouted, holding his hands out as the energy pulsed between them. "On three!"

"One… two… three!" they yelled in unison, unleashing their technique: **Thunderous Inferno**. A blast of fiery lightning erupted from their hands, engulfing the grunts and illuminating the forest in a blinding flash.

The grunts stumbled back, caught off guard by the sheer force of the attack. "Retreat!" one of them shouted, scrambling to escape the inferno.

As the last of the energy dissipated, Kaito and Ryker seized the moment. They dashed back toward the academy, heart pounding with adrenaline.

"That was intense!" Ryker panted as they finally reached the safety of the academy's walls. "Did we just invent a new move?"

"Definitely," Kaito replied, still buzzing from the thrill. "But I'd rather not test it out against seven grunts again anytime soon."

"Agreed!" Ryker laughed, his spirit unbroken. "But next time, I'm bringing snacks. If we're going to face danger, we might as well do it on a full stomach!"

As they caught their breath, they exchanged grins, knowing they had each other's backs—and that they were just getting started. The quarter-finals awaited, and they were ready to face whatever came next, one outrageous battle at a time.
